Chapter 1224
"I asked him to help me with something, and he won't be back for a while. Are you looking for him?" Fiona said, keeping her cool.
Darwin got the hint that Xavier was off running an errand for Fiona.
He quickly shook his head, "Nah, I'm not looking for him. As long as he's good, it's all fine."
Darwin hopped into the car, and Fiona turned to Christopher.
As they had planned, Christopher was sticking around to keep an eye on Xavier's condition.
Xavier was just barely out of the woods and could still face sudden issues.
Christopher gave Fiona a nod, and she finally got into the car.
"Oh, by the way, Ashton and the others came back early," Fiona mentioned.
Darwin looked a bit surprised, "Didn't they say they'd be gone for another couple of weeks?"
"Ashton's company building is under construction, and there's a ton of stuff she needs to handle herself. She couldn't wait any longer and came back," Fiona explained.
Darwin asked, "Are they joining us for camping tomorrow?"
Fiona shook her head, "They can't make it."
Melissa was too young, and Fiona didn't want Ashton to get too worn out.
Plus, Ashton wasn't great at hiding her feelings. If she let something slip in front of Darwin, the camping trip would be a bust.
Maybe it was the meds, but Darwin seemed to be in a really good mood.
When they passed a popular dessert shop in Bay City, Darwin even got out of the car to buy some treats.
He picked up a bunch of stuff that Fiona and Chicago liked.
"Why isn't there anything that Charles likes?" Darwin looked at the desserts in his hand, feeling a bit bummed.
"Last time we went camping, Charles really loved the food you grilled," Fiona reminded him.
Darwin perked up. "Got it, I'll grill more for him in the next few days!"
He showed the best spirit he had since the accident.
They arrived at Emerald Pool.
As Fiona got out of the car, she got a message from Hubert: [It's good that there are no side effects. I've already returned to the research institute and will arrange everything in the next couple of days.]
Fiona: [Thank you.]
She thought for a moment, looking at Darwin's happy back, and added: [Is your drug still in continuous development?]
Hubert: [Of course.]
Fiona: [If you need more money, let me know. And if you successfully develop a long-lasting drug with no side effects, you'll become a celebrity of our time.]
Hubert: [I will keep researching.]
Actually, this thing was just a kind of mental suppressant.
However, the frequent use of such suppressants led to drug tolerance. As tolerance built up, higher doses were required. Once it reached a critical point, even increasing the dosage further became futile.
Without the suppressant, the suppressed condition would come back with a vengeance.
Creating a long-lasting drug that didn't cause tolerance and had no or minimal side effects was super tough.
This research started with Hubert's parents and was continuously improved by him.
Hubert had thought that if he couldn't get the ideal results, he'd pass the research to the next generation.
One day, it would be successful.
"Darwin," Kenny called out.
As Darwin and Fiona stepped out of the elevator, they saw him.
Kenny had just poured some milk for Melissa and was about to take it to the living room to feed her.
"You're back." Darwin smiled warmly and looked towards the living room. "Melissa is here, Chicago must be thrilled. Since coming back from North Alabama, she talks about missing Melissa every day."
