Chapter 305 It’s All Because of You
Lilian froze.
Darwin... not on her side?
Impossible!
No matter what, he shouldn't give up on her!
"Let me see, show it to me!" Lilian, shaking, snatched the account information from Darwin's hands.
She couldn't believe it.
Chelsea had dug up such detailed information, the time the account was opened, the name it was opened under, everything was clear.
Including the cancellation date, it was there too.
Her hands trembled even more fiercely: "I...I remember now..."
Looking up, her eyes red and pitiful, Lilian said to Darwin, "A week before the accident, Mr. Potter suddenly started contacting me..."
Lilian appeared to be in agony: "That was right when you had rejected me. I was scared and felt hopelessly lost, so when your mother reached out to me, I clung to her like a lifeline. She asked me to go shopping with her, and one time she said she wanted to buy some jewelry but was short on foreign currency; she asked if I had an overseas account to help her pay... I didn’t think too much of it then. I wanted to please her, so I just paid as she asked...I didn't know it was for hiring a hitman, I really didn't!”
Darwin's expression darkened.
But Fiona laughed, "Lilian, to fabricate such lies even in the presence of the deceased, aren’t you afraid she’ll haunt your dreams seeking vengeance?"
"Ms. Rhoads, I know you resent me, and I love Darwin too. I can understand all your feelings and dissatisfaction, but please don't wrong me like this, or I’ll have nowhere to turn!" Lilian was on the verge of prostrating herself before Fiona.
"Resent you?"
Fiona suddenly rose and approached Lilian.
"Honey..."
Darwin, as if afraid Fiona might lash out, grabbed her hand, "Let me take care of it, okay?"
"Leave it to you?" Fiona turned to him, "So you can downplay it all?"
The moment Darwin glimpsed his account details, a headache began to throb behind his eyes.
He'd been suppressing it ever since.
"Do you have any idea how these phone signals and account details came to be?" Fiona demanded angrily. "It was my child, pushing through sickness, spending countless nights in front of the computer, draining so much mental energy to get this information. You think you can just make light of this? No way!"
"Darwin, I swear it wasn't me..." Lilian's eyes brimmed with tears.
"If it was really Lilian, I wouldn't cover for her," Darwin said, locking eyes with Fiona. "Just give me a bit more time to get to the bottom of this."
Fiona's gaze dripped with disappointment. "So, you've been swayed by someone else's prophecy and chosen to protect her, huh?"
"I'm not protecting her; I just want to thoroughly investigate this, honey. We're talking about a life-debt here; there's no room for error."
Fiona let out a sardonic laugh. "Since when have you hesitated, Darwin? Usually, you'd rather condemn an innocent than let a culprit go free."
Darwin's brow furrowed deeply. "Can't you back off a bit? You know very well she saved my life."
"Darwin!" Fiona barked, cutting him off. "Are you defending her because she saved your life, or because you still have feelings for her? Can you even tell the difference?"
Darwin's pupils quivered for a moment.
But Fiona wasn't planning to stay any longer.
Darwin had made his choice, and so had she.
"Stuart, bring more men. Circle the Klein Mansion. Nobody leaves until Mr. Solomon uncovers the truth—not Lilian, not a step outside the mansion, and not even Anniston's ashes! If anyone lets Lilian out, and she steps foot outside the Klein Mansion, they have my orders to shoot on sight!"
With that, she strode out without looking back, curious to see how long Darwin would take to uncover the truth and what he would decide to do with Lilian. But it hardly mattered.
Because as far as Fiona was concerned, Lilian was as good as dead.
Panic surged within Darwin.
He rose to follow her but was immediately overwhelmed by intense dizziness.
Clutching his head, he sank back into the chair.
"Darwin!"
"Mr. Solomon!"
With his hand still pressed to his aching head, Darwin watched Fiona's retreating figure. Without so much as glancing back, she left without hesitation.
"Darwin, are you okay? What's wrong with your head?" Lilian's concern was palpable, as if she wanted nothing more than to rush to his side.
Stuart stood off to the side, snorting in contempt.
The word "adulterers" was on the tip of his tongue, though unspoken.
When he watched soap operas and saw the adulterer storylines, he'd fast-forward through them. He despised such plots the most.
Stuart immediately took his team and marched out, encircling the Klein Mansion as they moved.
"Don't touch me." murmured Darwin as he pushed Lilian away.
The pain was intense; he had lost measure of his strength, causing Lilian to stumble and fall to the ground, her elbow crashing painfully against the coffee table.
Tears welled up in Lilian's eyes as she looked up at Darwin. "Don't you trust me?"
Darwin picked up the documents, his face deathly pale. "The money transferred to Anniston? How stupid do you think we are?"
"Alright then..." Lilian didn't get to finish her sentence as Darwin threw the documents in her face.
"How could you change like this? You once risked your life for me and now?" Darwin asked, anguished.
The sharp edge of the paper cut across Lilian’s cheek.
The stinging pain was a violent blow to Lilian's pride.
She knew Darwin well. Once he made up his mind, no evidence was required, and judgment was passed.
He wouldn't bother to investigate further or listen to her pleas.
Lilian laughed through her tears. "Do you really not know why? What was I like when we first met? You thought I was wonderful, right? And then what happened? You said you would protect me, but instead, I was sold to Europe like livestock, living a life worse than an animal's, enduring humiliation and torture!"
Darwin's face grew even paler.
But Lilian was not done. "And when you came to get me, persuading me to divorce and return, I did. And then you disdained my brokenness, insisting on marrying my double."
"I never disdained you," Darwin stated gravely.
Lilian scoffed, "Really? Then how, after Fiona died, could you stand being touched by me? For five and a half years until Chelsea showed up, you recoiled at the slightest touch of my hand. Is that not disdain? Darwin, you gave me hope and then you crushed it with your own hands. Isn't my fall from grace because of you? It should have been your duty to marry me, but instead, you chase after my double, and find a double for her. How can I not hate you?"
"If you hate me that's fine, but why would you hurt her?" Darwin asked between gritted teeth."
