Chapter 1219

Actually, Brooke only got into the whole fostering kids thing after Aiden's suicide. Before that, it was just Aldrich.

Hubert said she was looking for some kind of emotional fix, trying to transfer her feelings for Aiden to other kids.

"None of us want what happened to Aiden to happen again," Fiona said seriously, looking at Hubert.

It was after hearing the staff mention the truth about Marisole's death that Aiden lost all will to live and gave up his last hope of survival.

Hubert said, "Ms. Rhoads, don't worry. I'll be super careful and make sure it doesn't happen again."

"Alright," Fiona nodded.

Hubert added, "The meds you need are still in my lab."

Before he could finish, Fiona jumped in, "I can get a plane ready right now. Do you want me to send someone to pick it up, or will your people bring it over?"

"Let my people handle it," Hubert replied.

Following his suggestion, Fiona quickly arranged a private flight.

"Sorry if I scared you today," Fiona apologized as she saw Hubert off.

"You wanted to intimidate me first. If I got scared and lied, you'd know, right?" Hubert said, still very calm.

Fiona didn't deny it and admitted it directly.

Hubert laughed. "Seems like you've used this trick on others quite a bit, and it works well, huh?"

"So far, it's been foolproof," Fiona said with a rare smile.

Hubert looked at her. "Ms. Rhoads, besides researching extreme cases, I also do regular psychological counseling. If you ever feel too stressed, I'm always here to chat."

Fiona looked at Hubert. "Don't worry, if I ever need stress relief, you'll be the first person I go to."

"Deal!" Hubert nodded.

Fiona had Mike personally escort Hubert back.

When she got back to the hospital, Fiona noticed the once lush trees lining the streets had turned yellow and shed their leaves in just a few days.

Hubert was very considerate. He seemed worried that Fiona's concerns hadn't been fully alleviated.

Before long, Fiona received an email from Hubert.

There were many video diaries of Aldrich, but Hubert didn't send them all. He only selected the videos from the last period when Aldrich met Brooke.

There was also a letter Brooke later wrote to Hubert when he was eighteen.

In the letter, besides her expectations and wishes for Hubert, Brooke also mentioned Darwin. She said that Darwin and Hubert were like brothers, and after she was gone, Darwin and Hubert should support each other.

However, before Brooke could introduce Hubert to Darwin, she forgot about Hubert due to her illness.

After watching the videos and reading the letter, Fiona sent a message to Hubert: [When Darwin's condition stabilizes, you should let him know he has a buddy.]

A moment later, Hubert replied: [Okay.]

When Fiona returned to Darwin's side, he was still asleep.

By evening, Darwin slowly woke up.

It was unclear whether it was the aftereffects of the sedative or if his mind was already in a state of confusion, Darwin didn't remember what had happened before, nor did he know why he was in the hospital.

Fiona held his hand, pressed it to her cheek, and then gently said to him, "You accidentally fell into the lake. We were worried the water might be dirty and cause a lung infection, so you're here for a check-up. It's okay, we'll go home tomorrow. Chicago has prepared all the camping gear, and the day after tomorrow, we can go camping."
