Chapter 55 Rupert, Long Time no See
Winter hit Bay City way too early this year.
When Fiona headed to New Port, a light jacket did the trick. But coming back, standing at the packed exit, she felt the cold creeping in.
Hathaway was a stunner, turning heads just by being there.
Some folks recognized her. "Isn't she that trending rich girl? The one engaged to the Solomon Group heir!"
"Yeah, that's her! Even prettier in person!"
"What's she doing at the airport this late?"
"Probably picking up her fiancé, look over there!"
Darwin looked like he was having a bad day.
He glanced at Fiona, seeing her pale face, feeling both worried and ticked off.
"I had no clue she was coming," he muttered.
"Isn't it normal for her to pick up her fiancé?" Fiona's voice was flat. "Mr. Solomon, you should go. People already spotted you two. Don't let them snap any bad pics and blow it up."
Darwin's face was icy, but he still walked over.
Fiona lowered her eyes and trailed behind him.
It was seriously unbearable.
"Why are you here?" Darwin asked coldly when he reached Hathaway.
Hathaway smiled sweetly. "I went shopping in Port City with your mom. We just landed. Your mom knew you were coming back too, so she asked me to wait for you."
She glanced at Fiona, still smiling gently. "Ms. Woods, is your hand better?"
Fiona looked up, her eyes clear. "Yeah, thanks for asking."
Darwin looked at Fiona like he wanted to punch something.
"Mr. Solomon, I'll email you the meeting details once I sort them out." Fiona nodded slightly. "I'm heading home now."
"Ms. Woods, it's late, not safe for a girl to be alone. Why don't you join us?" Hathaway quickly said.
Fiona smiled. "No need."
After that blunt refusal, she didn't stick around to make more excuses.
The curious stares around her were super uncomfortable.
She walked straight to the taxi stand.
"Darwin, do you like cold beauties like Ms. Woods?" Hathaway glanced at Darwin, watching Fiona's slim figure walk away.
Darwin stayed silent, his face cold.
He was seriously pissed, not even hiding it.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"A big celeb's flight is right after yours. Look around, besides fans, there are tons of paparazzi." Hathaway smiled, but her tone was helpless. "Your mom knew you were with Ms. Woods and worried about bad photos, so she asked me to wait for you."
Darwin noticed people snapping pictures in his peripheral vision.
"Let's go, your mom's waiting in the garage." She linked her arm with Darwin's.
Darwin hated physical contact, especially with Hathaway.
"Just for show, I don't want to either," Hathaway whispered.
Darwin stayed silent.
A moment later, he got into a Mercedes.
The elegant and noble Anniston looked at him angrily.
"Didn't she quit? Why is she still around you?" she snapped, "Making Hathaway wait in the cold, acting out a scene!"
"Aunt Anniston," Hathaway gently patted Anniston's hand.
Anniston said, "Don't defend him. Since the engagement, he hasn't come back to Bay City. How much have you put up with?"
Hathaway said nothing.
Darwin seemed kinda out of it.
He wasn't sweating Fiona running off, but he was worried she'd overthink and get all upset.
She knew he and Hathaway had a deal for a marriage of convenience.
Anniston saw this and got even more pissed.
Darwin had been acting weird lately, even she could tell.
He used to be all about the Solomon Group, never letting anything else get in the way.
But now, because of Fiona, he was half-assing this big marriage alliance.
Looked like it was time for her to have a chat with Fiona.
Meanwhile, Fiona had already hopped into a taxi, heading straight to Thalassa's old place.
When Thalassa heard she was back out of the blue, she rushed over and ordered a table full of food at the restaurant downstairs to wait for her.
After Fiona arrived, she went upstairs to change out of her fancy Chanel suit to avoid Thalassa's questions.
"Didn't you say you wouldn't be back for a while?" Thalassa put a big piece of meat in Fiona's bowl.
Fiona thought for a moment. "Had some work stuff to finish, so I got called back."
She wasn't lying.
Being by Darwin's side was part of her job.
She hadn't handled things well, so Darwin called her back.
"The Atlas Group is so demanding?" Thalassa sighed. "But it's cool, I'll move in soon, and we can live together!"
Fiona slowly ate the meat.
After finishing, she looked at Thalassa apologetically. "Babe, I gotta move out."
Thalassa frowned. "Why?"
"I'll explain later." Fiona lowered her head and kept eating.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" Thalassa's eyes lit up. "Moving in together?"
"No."
"Good, you scared me!" Thalassa patted her chest. "I've been planning a party for you for ages!"
"What party?" Fiona was puzzled.
Thalassa smiled. "To find you a boyfriend!"
She always had wild ideas.
But Fiona didn't expect her to go this far.
Late night at Color Bar, it was so lit the roof was about to blow off.
Fiona sat in a booth.
Looking at the line of guys in front of her, all kinds of types, she couldn't help but think of those male escorts who didn't have Darwin's looks.
"They're all friends I met while studying abroad, all rich, and good people! See which one you like, and I'll help you get him!" Thalassa whispered in Fiona's ear.
Fiona stayed silent.
"Why are you all standing there? This is my best friend I've told you about!" Thalassa said proudly.
Fiona's beauty didn't need much hyping.
Seeing the looks in these guys' eyes, Thalassa knew they were all into Fiona.
"Hey, don't listen to Thalassa's nonsense..." Fiona hadn't finished speaking when someone showed up.
"Thalassa, sorry, I had a meeting..." The newcomer looked up, his gaze fell on Fiona, and his expression froze.
"Rupert, what are you staring at? Don't you recognize her?" Thalassa wrapped her arm around Fiona's waist, leaning on her shoulder, her tone and expression super close.
Fiona looked away.
Back then, Thalassa was already abroad.
She didn't get along with her stepdad's kids.
Fiona hadn't told Thalassa about her grandma, nor about Rupert.
By the time Thalassa got out of that mess, Fiona had been with Darwin for over half a year.
Thalassa had asked about her and Rupert.
Fiona only said they had lost contact.
