Chapter 41 Why Get Married?
Darwin was freaking out.
He strolled into the bedroom.
What used to be a cozy spot was now a ghost town.
Darwin glanced around, but there wasn't a single sign of her.
The bathroom and walk-in closet? All his stuff.
Fiona bailed so hard, she didn't even leave a memory behind.
First, Darwin was pissed.
He trashed his stuff, smashing everything in sight.
After blowing off steam, fear crept in.
He flopped onto the couch, whipped out his phone, and started dialing Fiona again.
Still no luck. Phone was off.
Around noon, Hathaway called.
Darwin stared at the phone, remembering Fiona's firm goodbye that day.
He ignored the call.
A few minutes later, Anniston rang.
Darwin hesitated, then picked up.
"Not at the office?" Anniston asked.
"Nope," Darwin replied, ice-cold.
Suddenly, a thought hit him like a truck.
Why the hell did he have to marry Hathaway?
The Solomon Group had been killing it under his watch. The future looked even brighter.
This stupid marriage had wrecked everything with Fiona!
"Mom, maybe we should call off the wedding," Darwin said, voice low.
"Darwin! What the hell are you talking about!" Anniston snapped, "What's gotten into you? Wasn't this marriage your idea? Didn't you say the Ross family was the best choice?"
Darwin's brow furrowed.
He wanted to know what was wrong with him too.
Why did his heart ache so much? Why was he so damn anxious?
Anniston continued, "Darwin, we started this whole thing. Everyone's watching, and the press conference is set. Think about Hathaway, okay? Canceling now would make her a joke! What did she do wrong?"
Darwin stayed quiet for a long time.
He was always good at weighing the pros and cons.
He knew the chaos canceling the wedding would cause.
And yeah, Hathaway was the innocent one here.
Before him, she had better options.
Darwin pushed down the storm inside him. "I get it."
Seeing this, Anniston's tone softened. "Darwin, can you really not live without Fiona?"
Darwin lowered his gaze.
Staring at the spotless carpet, he answered, almost in disbelief, "Yeah, I can't live without her."
Anniston was shocked.
Darwin had always been the rational one, even with Lilian, he never said he couldn't live without her.
"If you really like her, keep her on the side," Anniston said firmly, "But you can't let her mess up the marriage with the Ross family. You're the president of the Solomon Group. The Ross family won't mess with you, but they won't fear a secretary."
Darwin was taken aback, then straightened up.
Anniston added, "Hathaway's still waiting for you. Call her back."
"Okay." Darwin hung up.
He looked around the house, filled with memories of him and Fiona.
No matter what, he had to find her fast and keep her close.
He'd never let her be in danger again.
Darwin stood up, dialing as he walked to the door. "Get those people handling business in New Port out of there. They're fired."
Darwin's face darkened as he listened. "Keep looking for her, check all the surveillance footage!"
Fiona wasn't in New Port. No travel records either.
Darwin couldn't wrap his head around how she just vanished!
"Yes, sir!" The voice on the other end was trembling.
Darwin's temper was off the charts, scary as hell. "Book me a ticket to Serene City after the press conference!"
"Got it!" The call ended.
With a cold expression, Darwin called Hathaway back.
"Darwin, are you done?" Hathaway asked softly.
"Yeah, I'm heading over now," Darwin replied.
Just then, the elevator doors opened.
A woman holding a big bouquet of flowers looked up at Darwin, puzzled.
Darwin frowned and stepped aside.
The woman walked out, checked the door number, and was about to knock on Fiona's door.
"Who are you looking for?" Darwin hung up and asked, his tone icy.
Even though he was tall and handsome, his vibe was kinda intimidating.
The woman shrank back. "The owner of this house ordered flowers. I'm here to deliver them."
Darwin glanced at the flowers.
They were the kind Fiona usually had around.
"She's not here. Give them to me." Darwin reached out.
The woman hesitated, then realized. "You must be Ms. Woods' husband, right?"
Darwin's hand froze, and he didn't answer.
But the woman kept going. "Ms. Woods has been buying flowers from my shop for years. She said you work really hard, and seeing beautiful flowers when you come home would lift your spirits! Your wife really loves you!"
Darwin felt a pang of sadness.
He thought back over the past five years.
Fiona had always taken care of everything, both at home and at work.
But now she didn't want him anymore.
Darwin finally took the flowers.
When he got to the old house, he stepped out of the car, and Hathaway, looking stunning in a white gown, greeted him with a smile.
"What a beautiful bouquet!" Hathaway reached out for the flowers.
But Darwin dodged her hand and walked straight inside with the flowers. "Yeah, they're beautiful."
He handed the flowers to a servant.
"Arrange these and put them in my room," he instructed.
Hathaway's fingers stiffened.
She thought, 'Could these flowers be from Fiona?'
Near the villa, a bunch of media folks were lurking around.
They snapped pics of Darwin getting out of the car with the flowers and quickly posted them online.
Fiona saw the news that evening.
Her phone was off.
It was Sally who shoved her phone in her face, inviting her to check out the news together.
The news photo was perfectly framed.
The courtyard scene was blurred, Darwin stood tall holding the flowers, Hathaway looked elegant and charming with a sweet smile, their gazes met, and the sweet atmosphere seemed to burst through the screen.
Fiona took a bite of the ugly apple Burl had cut.
Why did those flowers look so familiar?
Weren't they the same kinds she usually bought?
Was Darwin out of his mind? Buying flowers for his fiancée and copying her taste?
