Chapter 591 Lost and Found
Darwin found himself caught in a moment of confusion when he realized he had mistaken someone else for Fiona. The realization struck him, and suddenly everything seemed to fall into place, offering him a trail of hints to follow.
Darwin couldn't express how upset he felt. "I went to the park with Lilian twice after that. How come I didn't see this lost and found?"
Fiona gently pinched his earlobe, a playful gesture masking deeper understanding. "Even If you had seen it, you wouldn't have known it was mine." Fiona pinched his earlobe. "We can't turn back time, so let it go. Let's go and claim the nameplate tomorrow."
Although Darwin acknowledged the rationality of Fiona's words, regret gnawed at him fiercely. He nodded quietly, his agreement barely audible amidst the turmoil of his thoughts.
He pulled Fiona into a tight embrace, seeking solace in her presence, a silent apology lingering in the air between them.
As more clues were discovered by internet users, the answer to who saved Darwin that year became evident.
In the late hours of the night, Lilian's distress was palpable as she scrolled through online content, her disbelief mounting with each revelation. "This can't be right! Fiona couldn't have done it. It's impossible!" she murmured, her shock evident in her trembling voice.
For Lilian, anyone could have been the one to rescue Darwin, except Fiona. After all, Fiona was meant to be her surrogate.
Lilian felt a heavy weight on her mind as she grappled with the realization that Fiona was the one who saved Darwin, a notion that seemed nonsensical to her.
Despite the mounting accusations against her, Lilian defiantly logged onto Twitter, her fingers trembling as she composed a tweet. "It's all lies! Fiona concocted this story to boost her and Darwin's image. You've all been deceived!" she exclaimed, her words a desperate attempt to salvage the situation.
Her tweet unleashed a torrent of responses from netizens, each one more damning than the last.
"How dare you still have the audacity to tweet? Regardless of whether Fiona is Darwin's savior, you impersonated Darwin’s savior, right? And later on, you used this incident to manipulate Darwin, didn't you? The child isn't Darwin's, right? You're the one who slandered him and Fiona, right? All of the above are true, only you are fake. Okay?"
"Lilian, on the internet, it's suggested that you provide evidence if you have any."
"Haha, since you showed up. Why don't you respond to the fact your former good friend exposed that you were a liar and you threatened her with her private photos? Did you really do that?"
Under this comment, an account quickly posted a long compilation of events, including Lilian's bullying of employees and mistreatment of suppliers.
"By the way, does everyone forget about Lilian's brother's disappearance and her mother's death? After reading those revelations about her, I now deeply suspect that her brother's disappearance and her mother's death have something to do with her! I suggest that the relevant authorities conduct a thorough investigation!"
"Am I the only one who noticed that the timing of her brother's disappearance is almost the same as that of Fiona being attacked in a suicide-like manner."
Lilian witnessed the swift transformation of the comments section, swiftly shifting its focus toward her brother and mother.
Without a moment's hesitation, she swiftly deleted the venting tweet, hoping to stem the burgeoning tide of attention. Yet, in a mere matter of minutes, both Lilian's reaction and the disappearance of her blog post managed to infiltrate the trending topics.
While the netizens lost their platform for free expression within Lilian's comment section, an expansive arena for discourse burgeoned within the public sphere.
The whirlwind of attention left Lilian feeling as though her mind was spiraling out of control.
Desperation surged within her, propelling her to once again reach for her phone. Despite being fully aware of the futility, Lilian pressed on, dialing numbers one after another throughout the night.
As dawn broke, Fiona and Darwin embarked on their day's journey after seeing off Charles and Chicago at school.
Central Park, once a vibrant hub, had gradually faded in popularity over the years as newer, trendier locales captivated the younger crowd.
However, an unexpected surge in visitors flooded the park, drawn by Darwin's past incident.
Some were locals who had since relocated, returning to bask in the nostalgia of their youth.
Fiona and Darwin, wearing masks and baseball caps, took a trip to the Central Lake.
Surveying the throngs from afar, they silently agreed to steer clear of the bustling crowd.
"This world grows ever more confounding," remarked Darwin, his gaze lingering on the distant multitude.
Fiona squeezed his hand reassuringly, offering solace, "The frenzy will subside in due time. We can return then. Let's retrieve the plaque first."
"Agreed," Darwin nodded, his thoughts elsewhere.
The past held little allure for him now that the one he once yearned for was firmly within his grasp.
With arrangements already made, they proceeded to seek out their contact without delay.
As they passed by the Lost and Found office, they saw a group of people gathering there, complaining, "Darwin was too quick. They posted it last night and he came to pick it up early in the morning. At least let us have a look..."
"Yeah, he's so stingy!"
Fiona looked at the stingy person, and the stingy person looked back at her. They shared a smile, and Fiona whispered, "Let's go, stingy."
"I'm not stingy!" Darwin protested.
After retrieving the plaque, they found it had already faded and begun to rust.
"Thank you for holding onto it for me all this time," Fiona expressed her gratitude sincerely.
The park administrator, now sporting a head of gray hair, responded, "We didn't keep it well. It's already started to rust."
"It's okay," Fiona reassured. "We're just fortunate to have found it again."
The administrator peered at Fiona and remarked, "Your face seemed familiar when my granddaughter showed me your picture online earlier. You used to frequent this park, sometimes with your grandmother, sometimes with your friends, but mostly alone. You'd buy a cream-filled pastry at the entrance and spend the whole afternoon by the lake, savoring it."
"You still remember me," Fiona blushed.
"Yes. My wife used to sell you those pastries. She thought you were charming and well-mannered, so she'd always give you extra cream!" the administrator shared with a fond smile.
"Is that so? No wonder the pastries I bought elsewhere never tasted as good as the ones from our park!" Fiona exclaimed in surprise.
"Sadly, my wife's memory isn't what it used to be. Otherwise, I'd have her make them for you again!"
Fiona felt deeply touched.
It was difficult to determine whether she was fortunate or not.
Throughout her life, she had encountered many kind-hearted people who brought her warmth through small gestures.
But she had also endured the loss of her mother and maternal grandparents. Furthermore, her romantic life had been fraught with challenges.
After a brief conversation with the administrator, he grew concerned that Fiona and Darwin might be recognized as the crowd of tourists swelled. He urged them to depart swiftly.
Little did they know that no matter how cautious they were, in such a crowded place, someone still recognized them.
The popularity of Center Park was currently skyrocketing. Once the images were shared online, they ignited a flurry of discussions among netizens.
The snapshots depicted Darwin and Fiona exiting the administrator's office. Darwin's arm casually draped around Fiona's waist, the two of them inseparable. Fiona held something aloft, showing it to Darwin. Upon closer inspection, it appeared to be a nameplate. A smile graced Darwin's lips, his expression one of contentment.
