Chapter 504 A Visit
The excitement was palpable as the second phase began.
The interior designer had completed all the modular work.
Darwin had to be with Fiona, staying by Charles's side at the hospital, so Chicago, Janna, and Thalassa took on the honorable task.
Before setting off, Chicago carefully wrapped the painting for the designer's wife, tying a beautiful bow and adding a thoughtful little card with blessings.
They soon headed out to the Emerald Pool.
Unbeknownst to the designer, Janna was accompanying Chicago.
Caught off guard, the designer was about to speak when Janna waved her hands dismissively. "Let's skip the formalities and flattery, I'm not fond of that."
The designer could only nod in acknowledgment, a mixture of surprise and intrigue evident on their face.
At that moment, Chicago approached with her painting. "Uncle, this is for your wife."
"My goodness!" the designer gasped, covering his mouth. "You actually painted it?"
Chicago nodded affirmatively.
The designer eagerly took the painting, the joy clearly visible in his eyes.
He was particularly enthusiastic when it came to checking colors and sizes.
In the span of a morning, the custom-furnished pieces were all set up in the home.
As the designer left, he couldn't tear his eyes away from the painting Chicago had gifted to Darwin, thoroughly enraptured.
YOUR painting, it wasn't just a masterpiece of color use, but also held an abundance of emotions that touched hearts deeply.
He turned to Chicago, bent down tenderly, and said, "Chicago, thank you."
Chicago didn't fully grasp why she was suddenly being thanked.
"Why thank me?" If she didn't understand, she was sure to ask.
The designer explained with a smile, "Because every time I see your painting, it makes me feel so happy and moved!"
Chicago would remember those words for a very long time.
After the designer's team had departed, Thalassa completed his photography for the day, praising Chicago's design talent while sending the photos to Fiona.
Chicago never had much interest in interiors, even those she designed herself.
As soon as Thalassa finished taking pictures, she eagerly took Janna and Thalassa to her Happy Estate.
First, they visited the kittens.
After a period of absence, the kittens had noticeably plumped up, resembling chubby little balls. Moreover, they seemed to have developed a more distant demeanor, becoming increasingly aloof.
After eating the canned food Chicago provided, one jumped into a hanging basket, swinging gently and falling asleep, not bothering to come down and play.
The staff responsible for taking care of the kittens explained, "When the weather is hot, cats tend to be lazier."
Chicago never blamed the kittens.
A cat's life is its own, how it chooses to live and interact with those who approach is up to the cat.
Afterward, Chicago ventured to the vegetable garden and the orchard.
With the season in full swing, there was an abundance of ripe vegetables and fruits.
Janna, getting on in years and not too fond of the sun anymore, opted to sit in the shade and wait.
Thalassa was seriously into fun.
She and Chicago reveled in the scorching sun, clearly enjoying themselves to the fullest.
However, the inevitable consequence of their fun in the sun became evident.
Once pale as the moon, both returned noticeably darker.
While Chicago remained indifferent to her complexion, Thalassa was on the verge of tears.
In just two days, she was scheduled to meet Kenny's parents, and here she was, tanned to a deep shade from her day spent harvesting fruits and vegetables.
That evening, Thalassa applied a skin-whitening face mask, covering both her face and neck, while Kenny tried his best to stifle his laughter.
"Even if you've gotten a tad darker, you're still paler than most," Kenny comforted her. "And you look absolutely gorgeous. It doesn't affect your beauty one bit."
Thalassa pouted tearfully at him. "That's just lover's blindness!"
Kenny's shoulders shook as he chuckled.
"I'm never playing with Chicago again; she totally sabotaged me!"
Kenny popped a pickled cherry tomato into Thalassa's mouth to cheer her up.
"Don't worry about it, my parents are not hard to please."
Thalassa looked at him. "To be honest, when I married you, I really didn't give it much thought. Our families are worlds apart. I'm scared that once I get there, your mom might just hand me a check to leave you."
Thalassa could never have predicted.
What she said off the cuff would actually come true.
That Saturday, Kenny and Thalassa set off early in the morning.
When they arrived at the Walker family estate, it wasn't even eleven in the morning.
Thalassa had imagined Kenny's home to be magnificent.
However, she had never imagined that the Kenny's residence would be an enormous mansion with architectural grandeur.
"This is the ancestral home, it was partly destroyed during the war, and was restored after things settled down," Kenny explained as they walked inside, hand in hand.
Thalassa's gaze drifted across the parking lot filled with cars that could rival any high-end auto show.
"Are we expecting a lot of guests today?" Thalassa wondered.
"No, my mom wanted you to feel comfortable, so it's just family today," Kenny replied.
Thalassa was surprised. "Then, whose cars are these?"
Kenny glanced at them. "Those are my dad and brothers' collections. Guest's cars don't park here."
Talk about living large.
They stepped through the entrance.
Thalassa heard a voice, bursting with joy, "Thalassa!"
She looked toward the voice, and saw a glamorous woman dressed in a dress, her hair styled in luxurious waves, rushing towards her.
She’d seen this woman in photographs before.
It was none other than her mother-in-law, Kenny's mom, Mrs. Scarlet Wells.
"Thalassa, must have been a long trip for you?" Scarlet, ignoring the towering Kenny, smiled and took Thalassa's hand. "We've prepared all your favorite dishes at home!"
"Thank you, Mom," Thalassa responded sweetly.
Kenny couldn’t help but smile when he heard her call his mother “Mom.“
Scarlet was even more delighted.
Her beautiful face beamed with a smile that seemed about to split her cheeks. "Say 'Mom' again, will you?"
Thalassa hadn't expected Kenny's mom, who looked so dignified and aristocratic in photos, to be so approachable in person.
Her ears and cheeks flushed with color.
She repeated, "Mom."
Scarlet looked like she was on cloud nine.
She pulled Thalassa inside, "My dear daughter-in-law, you're much more beautiful in person than on video!"
“Video?“ Thalassa was puzzled.
Scarlet was referring to the clips sneakily filmed by the butler and sent to her.
She waved it off. "Never mind that! Has Kenny been behaving at home? Has he cooked for you? Has he made you mad? Don't spoil him too much. Men can go bad if they're spoiled!"
Thalassa was taken aback.
She glanced back at Kenny.
This mother-in-law was nothing like she had imagined.
Kenny strolled leisurely behind them.
Scarlet noticed Thalassa looking at Kenny and turned her head back toward her. "This is his home; he won't get lost!"
After a while, they reached an antique-looking living room.
A composed middle-aged man stood up.
He was Kenny's father, Matt Walker.
