Chapter 170 My Dad is Amazing
At the restaurant, Darwin ordered the signature children's meal set for Chicago. The meal came with a cute duck figurine which Chicago had a blast playing with.
During the meal, Chicago looked at the delicious food in front of her and began to worry again.
"Uncle, you know you shouldn't casually eat food or drink water given by strangers?" Chicago looked at Darwin with her big, serious eyes.
"Of course. You are so clever, knowing all that stuff." Darwin praised wholeheartedly.
"Yeah, Mommy taught me." Chicago nodded, "Uncle, you have to remember, okay? There are lots of bad people out there, and if someone tries to use a kid to trap you, that would be dangerous!"
Listening to Chicago's out-of-the-blue remarks, Darwin pondered deeply.
"Did you hear something?" Darwin asked.
Chicago wrinkled her little nose.
At that moment, Wendy finally snapped back to reality: "Sir, it was that lady who attended the event with you today... she said some off-the-wall things, and the little one overheard, so she's a bit worried about you."
Chicago nodded, although she didn't understand what 'off-the-wall' meant.
Lilian... she wants to use a child to tie herself to me?
"I understand." Darwin said, patting Chicago's little head, "I will be very, very careful."
"Mm!" Chicago let out a huge sigh of relief.
After lunch, Darwin did as he said he would and took Chicago to an indoor children's play park.
As soon as they appeared, they attracted a lot of attention from around the playground.
After Chicago had played for a while, someone came over to strike up a conversation.
"Sir, is this your daughter? She's just too adorable!" a middle-aged woman commented, gazing at Chicago, who was playing on the slide, with complete adoration.
Darwin was just about to explain when a little boy suddenly grabbed something with sharp edges and hurled it towards Chicago.
"Chicago!" Darwin exclaimed in alarm.
He quickly ran over, scooped up Chicago, and the hard object ended up hitting Darwin on the leg.
Holding Chicago, Darwin turned back and frowned at the little boy.
Even adults feared Darwin's imposing manner, much less a child.
The little boy immediately burst into loud tears, "Granny!"
An elderly woman heard the cry and rushed over.
"What's the matter! Who is bullying you?" she demanded. Looking at Darwin she questioned angrily, "Did you bully my grandson?"
"He took this thing and almost hurt my child!" Darwin said coldly.
"Kids roughhousing is normal!" the elderly woman retorted loudly, "Is your daughter made of glass? She can't even be touched?"
"That's right, she can't be touched!" Darwin answered without hesitation.
Intimidated by his demeanor, the woman took two steps back with the child.
The man was tall and seemed tough to deal with, but she had one last retort to make to try get the better of him.
"It's just a girl, why so protective? Could it be you're unable to have a son!" the elderly woman scoffed before turning to leave.
But then, Chicago's little face showed her displeasure of this rude woman's remarks.
"Hmph, I have a brother!" Chicago suddenly spoke up, "My dad is awesome, you know, me and my brother are twins!"
The woman's face stiffened.
The room erupted in laughter at the proud and adorable sight of Chicago.
The elderly woman, cursing under her breath, walked away with the unruly child in her arms.
Darwin, for his part, looked at Chicago somewhat astonished.
He had always heard Chicago mention a brother and had assumed it was a brother who was several years older. Could it really be that she has a twin brother?
As the old woman and the child left, Chicago turned to Darwin and asked in a small voice, "Uncle, am I awesome?"
"Very awesome." Darwin nodded, affirming.
Twins... Fiona had mentioned that their children were also twins.
At that moment, an unbearable pain clutched at Darwin's heart.
"Uncle, why are your eyes getting red?" Chicago, reaching up, gently touched the corner of Darwin's eye, her voice full of concern.
"Are they?" Darwin lowered his eyelids.
"Aren't you happy, Uncle?" Chicago continued, her mood beginning to falter as well.
"I am happy. With Chicago by my side, I'm very happy." Darwin said, speaking from the heart.
Chicago was very sensitive, so she knew her handsome uncle was sad.
Chicago hugged Darwin's neck and gently patted his back, "I will pat you, and you'll feel better."
Darwin smiled.
"Do you want to keep playing?"
"Yes!"
Darwin set Chicago down, his eyes fixed on her following the earlier alarming event. He was almost inseparable from her.
Watching them, Wendy felt a pang of wistfulness. If only Chicago really had such a wonderful father.
They played all afternoon. Eventually, Fiona's call came.
Wendy stepped up to Chicago and Darwin, "Miss, it's time to go home."
Chicago glanced at Darwin before confirming with Wendy, "Did Mommy call?"
"Yes, she made your favorite raspberry cake!"
In the past, the mention of raspberry cake would have immediately brightened Chicago's eyes.
But today... she looked at Darwin again, her whole being radiating reluctance, "Uncle, I have to go home now."
"Okay, thank you for treating me to a meal today, Chicago." Darwin gently fixed the tousled hair on Chicago's head.
She was very reluctant to leave, more so than the last time they parted. She walked slowly out of the restaurant. The family car was already waiting by the roadside.
Darwin walked her to the car.
Before getting in, Chicago signaled for Darwin to crouch down which he willingly did without hesitation.
She hugged him, "Are you a little happier now, Uncle?"
"Very happy." Darwin replied.
"Uncle, always stay happy." Chicago said in a muffled voice, burying his head in Darwin's shoulder.
"I will." lied Darwin.
He lost the woman he loved, he hadn't felt happy for a long time. For five long years he hadn't felt happy.
"Chicago, you should also listen to your mom and dad."
"I know." Chicago nodded.
"Miss, it's time to get in the car." Wendy said, feeling emotional.
It was clear that Fiona didn't like this gentleman, and she would certainly not allow the Miss to see him again in the future.
"Bye, Uncle." Chicago let go of Darwin, his head drooping as she got into the car.
Inside the car was Chicago's child safety seat.
Darwin, who had never interacted with children before, did not know that such a small child needed a safety seat.
"Mr. Solomon, thank you for your trouble today." Wendy sincerely said before closing the car door.
"It's nothing." Darwin stood up, stepped back, and waved to Chicago again.
He stood in place without moving even after the car drove away.
Inside the car, once the car started, Chicago sat silently, at first just in silence, and then tears began to fall silently.
Wendy felt incredibly sorry for her.
"Miss, why are you crying? Don't cry, let me tell you a joke!"
Chicago ignored Wendy.
She was completely immersed in the sadness of being apart from Darwin.
Wendy was puzzled.
Chicago always had a very good relationship with Mr. Dagmar. When the children were younger, Wendy even thought for a while that Mr. Dagmar was their father. But when she parted ways with Mr. Dagmar, she always said goodbye with a laugh and never cried once.
What was it this time?
