Chapter 656 Irrefutable Evidence
"Charlotte, sister!" Chicago's voice echoed as she descended the stairs, still half-asleep and barefoot.
Spotting Charlotte in a yellow raincoat, Chicago's excitement bubbled over.
"Wow, your raincoat is so cute! Mommy, can I have one too? Can Jessie have one too? It's still raining outside, and Jessie must be bored inside the house!" Chicago exclaimed, darting towards Charlotte.
Examining her raincoat, Charlotte realized it was quite ordinary, a random choice from her father's suitcase.
"It's too cold to go out now. You, Charlotte, and Jessie can't play outside," Fiona gently caressed Chicago's head. " Daddy and I have some things to do. Can you show Charlotte around and help her pick a room?"
"Is Charlotte staying over?" Chicago's eyes lit up. "Can she sleep with me? My friend's sister sleeps with her every day!"
"You can ask her, but I think you both still need your own rooms and privacy, even if you occasionally share a bed," Fiona explained.
"Okay," Chicago agreed obediently.
Taking Charlotte's hand, Chicago led her to the dining room. "Has Charlotte had breakfast? Today, we're making banana pancakes, they're delicious! Let's share!"
Although Charlotte had already eaten, she joined Chicago at the table.
Chicago was quite the chatterbox, but her adorable voice and interesting anecdotes made it enjoyable for Charlotte.
"Has Charlotte met my brother?" Chicago inquired.
Charlotte nodded. "Yes, I have."
"My brother is amazing! In the finals this time, I ranked 297th in my grade, but he got first place!"
"Do you admire being top of the class?" Charlotte asked.
"I admire my brother!" Chicago declared proudly. "He's the most handsome boy I've ever seen. My godmother says it'll be hard for me to find a boyfriend in the future because no one will be better-looking than him!"
Charlotte blinked in confusion at the mention of boyfriends at such a young age.
Her father had mentioned boyfriends last night too.
"Focus on your studies. If you start dating early, I'll break that little brat's legs!" he had joked.
"You and your brother look alike," Charlotte observed.
Shaking her head mysteriously, Chicago replied, "Charlotte, you don't understand. Given time, you'll see. My brother and I are different."
Charlotte pondered for a moment before declaring, "I'll become the top student in my grade too."
Looking at her admiringly, Chicago exclaimed, "Really? You're already the top student in third grade, Ethan in fourth, and my brother in first!"
Fiona observed from a distance, surprised by the seamless interaction between Chicago and Charlotte. Her earlier anger had somewhat dissipated. Now, Fiona planned to uncover the culprits behind her back.
Darwin's team and the police meticulously examined surveillance footage before and after the crime near Alexander and Sebastian's residences. Although both families had surveillance cameras, they mysteriously malfunctioned during the crime. Despite multiple viewings, nothing suspicious was noted.
With arms crossed, Henry stood before the monitors, brow furrowed in concentration. "They can't simply vanish. They must have avoided main road surveillance. Any useful footage from private cameras?"
"We've checked. Nearby private cameras focus on homes to prevent neighbor disputes," came the response.
Henry pondered silently, scrutinizing the surveillance footage. Despite his role as Darwin's assistant, he harbored no ill will toward Hathaway. However, witnessing the devastation of his former schoolmates' families instilled a sense of urgency to apprehend the mastermind.
Suddenly, in the footage, Henry spotted a car emerging from a side road. "Rewind!" he exclaimed urgently.
After freezing the footage, Henry discerned the car's license plate, albeit blurry. "Track down this car, retrieve its dashboard camera, and gather data from other vehicles in the area," he instructed.
Ultimately, four dashboard cameras were found near Sebastian's house.
Henry swiftly gathered available personnel and captured faces from the dashboard cameras, comparing them to descriptions provided by Charles and Thomas.
"Henry, come see this!" an exclamation broke out an hour later.
Rushing over, Henry was directed to a half-face on the screen, resembling the person who rescued Thomas. "This person has a scar below the eyebrow, just like in the portrait!" the observer noted.
Henry remained silent.
It was only a profile view.
To err on the side of caution, Henry sent the half-face to an artist to complete the portrait based on the profile.
Soon, the artist returned with a confident match. "The bone structure is remarkably similar to one of the profiles from last night. It's likely the same person."
Excitement mingled with apprehension as Henry realized Mr. Solomon's speculation was accurate. Hathaway's avenger had only just begun.
A cloud of uncertainty loomed over Henry. 'Who would be next? Surely Mr. Solomon and Secretary Woods were prime targets.'
"Have Alexander's team employ the same method," Henry instructed quietly. "Search for this person in the surveillance footage and look for the accomplice as well."
After issuing orders, Henry sought out Darwin, who was with Fiona.
Coincidentally, upon Henry's arrival and mention of surveillance, he received news from the team analyzing the car's black box. The perpetrator who killed Thomas's girlfriend had been identified, thanks to surveillance footage from a nearby shop capturing a clear image.
"These two cases at Alexander's were undoubtedly committed by these individuals!" Henry clenched his teeth in frustration.
The brutality of targeting the elderly and children was despicable.
"It's inconceivable these major crimes went unnoticed," Fiona remarked icily. "Enhance the surveillance images and the portraits, publicly announce the cases, and launch a nationwide manhunt for the killers."
