Chapter 258 The Fiery Passion of a Godfather**
Fiona was actually surprised. After all, she wasn't a saint without desires. It all made sense to just go with the flow and do what naturally came next. She might only berate herself later for succumbing to her cravings. But Darwin stopped, and that was beyond her expectations. In the past, this would have been unthinkable. It seemed as though... he really had learned to respect her.
She pressed a quick, rewarding peck onto Darwin's lips, smiled, and teased, 'Mr. Solomon, maybe you should head to the bathroom?”
Her smile was captivating and bright, causing Darwin's past five years of distressing memories to resurface. He pulled her into his arms again.
"Wife, I miss you so much, I'm starting to lose my mind," Darwin's voice shook, betraying his emotional turmoil. "I keep seeing your shadow at home, but when I chase after it, there's nothing... Thank goodness... this time I've really got you in my arms."
Fiona listened to his voice laced with sobs, her heart aching with each word.
"Serves you right," she whispered, not truly meaning it.
"Yeah, it does!" Darwin agreed, nodding earnestly. "So is the punishment over now? I want you to come home, back to our home."
He had never really had a home of his own. On reflection, the most at peace he'd ever felt was when they were together in this apartment. No matter where he looked, she was always there. Everybody else might leave him, but not her. Where she was—that was his destination, the home he longed for.
"What's the point in talking me into it?" Fiona muttered. "What if my kid doesn't like you, doesn't want you for a dad?"
Take Charles, for instance. He's already made it pretty clear he's not too fond of Darwin. And sure, Chicago adores Darwin right now. But... Chicago is so emotionally delicate and sensitive. If she ever finds out that her dad didn’t want her, that he once wished her harm... She'd be as heartbroken as she was affectionate. Unless we keep it from her forever.
"I'll do my best," Darwin promised earnestly. "Trust me, I'll love her as if she were my own."
Fiona sighed softly. Her fingertips gently caressed his cheek, a gesture of tenderness amidst the emotional turmoil. "Button up my dress, please. I really need to leave."
Before leaving, Fiona also stopped by the restroom. Freshened up, she finally pressed the elevator button, under Darwin's longing gaze.
Before stepping into the elevator, Darwin stole a few more kisses, lingering at every one.
After Fiona left, Darwin spent a long time in the bathroom. After his shower, he hesitated before heading to the study. Slumping into the office chair, he gently caressed the baby crib. "Kids, daddy's trying to bring mommy back home. If you haven't moved to your new home yet, wait for mommy to return, then come find us. I'll make up for my past mistakes..."
Pain gripped Darwin's chest. In his life, regrets were few and far between. Treating Fiona poorly and the tragic mishap with his child haunted him deeply.
"This little crib... I'm worried it'll make mommy sad, so... I'll move it somewhere else for now. Later, I’ll get you a better, prettier one, okay?"
Darwin sat in the study for a long time until a WhatsApp message from Fiona popped up.
"Stop sleeping on the couch; it's sagging."
A smile broke through Darwin's sorrowful expression.
That night, he went back to sleep in the master bedroom's bed. To his surprise, it didn't feel odd. Despite a few nightmares, he slept through till morning.
After Fiona left, she began to pack her bags. She didn't have much to pack -- it was supposed to be just a few days back home to spend time with her lively kid. But then...
"This is the gaming console Kenny bought for Charles, a whole bunch of game cartridges, and a few programming books... And these are some dresses Kenny got for Chicago."
Fiona was speechless. "You call these ‘a few dresses’? Did your husband buy out the whole store or something?"
"This is normal, okay? By the way, you saw Darwin today, right?" Ashton crossed his arms, assuming the interrogator's stance.
Fiona was taken aback. "You saw us?"
"Well, no, but maybe you should take a look in the mirror, hm? You're radiating joy, and there's a twinkle in your eyes that's just... beguiling."
He knows you have a daughter, wanting to step in as a dad, and he doesn't even get her a gift? That's less than what my son and daughter's godfather did, and they've never even met!" Ashton said with a hint of pride.
It was just yesterday when she mentioned that she wanted to spend a few days at home with her child.
Today, Kenny showed up with all these things.
"Well, there is that," Fiona said without making excuses.
They were chatting when a message from Darwin came through.
"Send me your daughter's documents, I've been in touch with a lawyer and want to set up a trust fund for her."
Fiona was taken aback.
Glancing at the dresses, video games, and cartridges, and then back to Darwin's bland but pragmatic WhatsApp message.
"A trust?" Ashton was astonished. "That's got to be like a billion, right? Think about it, that's Darwin's style... Are you going to let him do it?"
"Just send the documents over; he might not know the big name of Chicago, but the birthday will give it away, won't it?" Fiona said while responding to Darwin, "Her great-grandmother won't allow it."
"Do you plan to keep hiding from Darwin that the child is actually yours and his?" Ashton asked tentatively.
"If we reconcile, of course, I'll tell him. If we don't, and he finds out about the child, he'll definitely try to take her away," Fiona's tone cooled.
"What about your elusive husband? What's his stance?" Ashton changed the subject; discussions about the child always seemed to make Fiona tense.
The thought made Fiona laugh.
"Just the other day, he was okay with being a family of three, and now it's become either I get a divorce or I become a widow."
"A family of three?" Ashton was shocked, but then he gave a thumbs up, "That's so Darwin!"
"Stop talking about him for a second; this stuff is too much!" Fiona just wanted to wear a chic airport look, carry a little suitcase, and board the plane.
"It's not my fault; blame the godfather who's never met her for being too enthusiastic!"
Fiona smirked at her self-satisfied expression.
"You're about to get busy; maybe take him to see your grandma first. She's really worried about your marriage; if she knew you married such a great guy, she'd recover faster!"
"Grandma's birthday is in about ten days. Kenny and I have discussed preparing a birthday party and then revealing the marriage to her—double the joy!"
The joy emanating from Ashton was genuine.
It was nothing like before with Chris, when she was always anxious and plagued with doubts.
This must be the happiness and safety that comes with being truly loved, Fiona thought.
How wonderful.
