Chapter 176 Private Dinner
Charles pondered deeply but decided not to persuade his sister too forcefully.
His sister wanted a phone, and he had enough money to buy it for her.
But, if she got a phone, it was likely to contact that person, right?
He decided in a second. Charles dismissed the idea of buying his sister a phone.
If his suspicions were correct. Then he would never, in his life, want his sister meeting or contacting that person again.
On the way to the banquet, Fiona was somewhat distracted.
She hadn't expected Mrs. Solomon to still remember her so fondly after all these years.
Fiona finally arrived at the private banquet. It was held at a vineyard wine estate. It was the golden wedding anniversary of Janna's friends.
Stepping out of the car, Fiona immediately drew quite a bit of attention.
The host couple approached her.
"You must be Chelsea." Mrs. White's face radiated such warmth and affection that she looked much younger than her years.
"Congratulations on your golden anniversary." Fiona presented the gift prepared by Janna, "Grandma got stuck at the airport, and her flight was delayed, so she entrusted me to deliver her best wishes."
"No worries, we've been friends for decades, we don't need these formalities." Mr. White said cheerfully.
Mrs. White sized up Fiona with a scrutinizing glance, "Janna really knows how to keep a secret, hiding such a beautiful granddaughter for over twenty years! Had I known she had such an attractive granddaughter, I would have fought tooth and nail to pair you up with my good-for-nothing grandson."
"Grandma, you might as well forget about it. Miss Chelsea is already married with kids, and they're several years old." piped up a woman, glowing with high fashion and jewels, swaying gracefully as she approached.
That was Sophia, the youngest child of the White family.
Mrs. White's very own granddaughter.
"What?" Mrs. White exclaimed, startled, and then scolded her granddaughter, "Stop talking nonsense!"
"It's all over the gossip tabloids. I'd like to know myself, is it nonsense, Chelsea?" Sophia said defiantly, looking at Fiona.
Fiona couldn't recall whether she had ever met Miss White. Nor did she know if she had ever offended her. However, she knew that Miss White had just offended her.
"Miss White, you really should take gossip reports with a grain of salt." Fiona replied, her smile slight.
Sophia was about to retort but was tugged at by her grandmother.
Mrs. White, still genial, turned to Fiona, "Chelsea, you should go inside. Dinner will be starting shortly."
"Alright." Fiona nodded gently.
A host then led Fiona further inside.
Once Fiona left, Miss White exploded: "Grandma, why did you interrupt me?"
"Have you lost your mind?" Mrs. White asked sharply. "Do you know who she is? In a few years, Janna will give her everything from the Rhoads family without missing a beat, and our White family isn't as influential as it used to be. We might need to depend on the Rhoads family. Janna has told me that her granddaughter has her temperament, she never forgets a slight. Now that you've offended her, do you want her to cut ties and cancel our collaboration when she takes over the Rhoads family?"
Sophia clenched her teeth in frustration.
"The acquisition I worked on after graduating last year could have been a brilliant victory, but she sabotaged it halfway through!"
At that time, Sophia had just graduated, brimming with ambition and nowhere to channel it.
When she started on the acquisition, she was telling everyone to wait for her victory party.
Unexpectedly, Chelsea, who was working on another merger at the time, casually included Sophia's target into her own plans.
This left Sophia utterly embarrassed!
And from that moment on, Sophia despised Chelsea.
"Hmph, it must be her talent then!" Mrs. White said coolly.
She knew her own granddaughter well.
"What talent?" Sophia glanced dismissively at Fiona's graceful retreating figure. Under the lights, Fiona's skin looked so luminous it almost glowed, overshadowing the brilliance of the jewels she wore. "Her talent in bed, perhaps?"
"You're shameless!" Mrs. White's face turned a steely shade of blue.
Mr. White hastily intervened, "Let's not get angry, no need to be upset!"
Sophia didn't want to upset her grandmother either, so she chose to keep her mouth shut.
The event was attended by many of prominent status. On her way here, she had overheard numerous people discussing Chelsea. This was her first official appearance in these high circles. Sophia thought about it and allowed herself a sly, scheming smile.
The first impression was crucial. She had to seize the opportunity to make Chelsea embarrass herself badly.
As she was plotting, she heard her grandmother abruptly change the subject, "Sophia, if you're not too busy, why don't you take some champagne over to your brother?"
"Doesn't he have servants for that?" Sophia couldn't be bothered and made that clearly known.
"He has brought a distinguished guest home today, and I would like you to make an appearance." Mrs. White said with a tone of stern disappointment.
"Who's the distinguished guest?" Sophia never held her brother in high regard.
All this talk about being a great attorney, in the end, wasn't he just working for someone else, no matter how big the law firm?
"Your brother is now a legal consultant for Solomon Capital. The president of Solomon is attending the dinner tonight." the old man said cheerfully.
"Darwin?" Sophia's indifference changed instantly.
"That's right." Mrs. White said, still with that frustrated expression.
Darwin was now a hot commodity in the financial tycoon community, even more sought after than he was five years ago.
"I'll go take them champagne right now!" Sophia didn't want to waste another minute.
She had seen Darwin before. He was handsome, and with a stature and physique that were simply perfect, not to mention his top-tier financial status.
He was a diamond in the rough. If she could become Darwin's wife, what would she have to worry about in life? The title of Mrs. Darwin would be enough for her to boast for a lifetime!
As soon as Sophia left, Mr. White looked helplessly at his wife, "I've heard Darwin has a steady woman by his side. Why even bother with this?"
"Are you talking about Lilian?" Mrs. White scoffed. "Not to mention she's divorced and remarried, does her status even qualify her to marry into the Solomon family? She's been by Darwin's side for years without any official status to show for it. That tells you everything you need to know about her place in his life. To put it nicely, she's a companion. To put it not so nicely, a bedfellow..."
Mr. White moved his mouth, but in the end, he didn't dare to contradict his wife's words.
"Isn't a golden wedding achieved just like this? There's always someone who has to give in.
On the second floor, Darwin swirled his champagne glass as he looked out of the rose window at the scene engulfed in lights.
"Darwin, guess who my grandparents invited today?" Antony entered, beaming with a smile.
Before Darwin could answer, Antony replied: "Janna's granddaughter Chelsea, I just met her in person, and she is so beautiful it makes me regret marrying too early!"
