Chapter 57 You're still a Letdown

"Hey Fiona, can we talk?" Rupert asked, sounding all desperate.

Fiona acted like he wasn't even there.

Her eyes locked onto that slick Rolls-Royce Ghost.

She thought, 'Looks like the same model.'

But then, a familiar driver stepped out, rocking those white gloves, and opened the back door.

Darwin, in his black trench coat, got out.

He looked up and their eyes met.

Rupert followed her gaze.

When he saw Darwin, his eyes went wide.

"What's he doing here?" Rupert asked Fiona, "You... you didn't... but he's getting married, right?"

"Who's getting hitched? What wedding?" Thalassa slurred, looking up all tipsy.

Fiona grabbed her, turning her away from Darwin.

Darwin was already walking over.

"Mr. Wells, whether I get married or not, what's it to you?" He oozed that rich guy vibe.

Rupert would never forget how Darwin had humiliated him.

Darwin had gotten him kicked out of the lab, accused him of plagiarism, and even messed with his parents' business.

All just to show him he wasn't good enough for Fiona.

"After all these years, you're still a letdown." Darwin shifted his gaze from Rupert to Fiona.

That look could've shattered Fiona.

"Mr. Solomon, you're getting married and still can't leave her alone?" Rupert said, trying to be brave.

He wasn't the same guy who could be easily pushed around!

He didn't need to fear Darwin anymore.

He thought, 'Yeah! No more fear!'

"What does this have to do with you?" Fiona snapped at Rupert. "Rupert, we were nothing before, and after all these years, you're just a stranger. Stop messing with my life and leave!"

Rupert's face went even paler.

But he didn't budge.

"She's worried I might kill you, and you're still standing there like a statue. Should I call you loyal or just plain dumb?" Darwin sneered.

Fiona found this side of Darwin even scarier than his anger.

"Darwin, what are you talking about?" She frowned.

"Darwin?" Thalassa suddenly perked up, tilting her head. "Oh, it's really him."

Fiona felt a headache coming on.

"Oh my god, Mr. Solomon, you're so famous now, we have fans of yours at our company!" Thalassa let go of Fiona and stood up, still swaying. "Congrats on your engagement! Your fiancée is stunning! Like a Barbie doll!"

Fiona's fingers trembled.

"Mr. Solomon, go handle your stuff. My friend is drunk, I'll take her home," she said, ignoring Rupert.

If he wanted to get himself killed, so be it.

She just wanted to get Thalassa away from Darwin.

But as she took a couple of steps, Darwin's bodyguards stepped in. "Ms. Woods, leave her to us."

"Try touching her!" Fiona snapped, then turned to Darwin. "Mr. Solomon, what’s this about?"

Darwin ignored Rupert.

He walked up to her, raised his hand, and tucked her loose hair behind her ear. "I'm here to take you home."

His tone was soft, but Fiona could tell he was about to blow.

"I..." She couldn't finish, Darwin's eyes locked onto hers.

His gaze was ice-cold, scarier than ever.

"They'll get her home safe," he said, his voice like a glacier. "Or do you not want her to go home? How about I toss her into the sea?"

"No!" Fiona shook her head, terrified.

She knew Darwin wasn't bluffing.

"Ms. Woods, don't worry, we'll get Ms. Carey home safe and sound," the bodyguard said respectfully.

Fiona had known these guys for years.

She trusted them.

"Thalassa, I gotta handle something. These are my friends, they'll take you home," Fiona said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Thalassa nodded, all sleepy.

When Fiona was free, she'd cling to her.

But when Fiona had stuff to do, she'd be super obedient.

Darwin held out his hand, not touching her, just waiting.

Fiona glanced at it, then took his hand.

In the next moment, Darwin gripped it tight.

He led her, striding towards the car parked by the curb.

Thalassa stood there, head tilted, swaying, watching them walk away.

"Did Darwin just hold Fiona's hand?" she mumbled.

She staggered, trying to follow.

The bodyguard stopped her. "Ms. Carey, you saw wrong!"

When Thalassa looked again, the car was already gone.

She thought, 'Saw wrong? Yeah, must've seen wrong. Darwin's getting married, no way Fiona would hold his hand. Fiona hates mistresses!'

Before getting into the car, Thalassa suddenly remembered Rupert was still there.

She turned around clumsily and waved at Rupert. "Rupert, let's go!"

Rupert stood frozen, not responding.

His mind was stuck on Darwin's words. "After all these years, you're still a letdown."

That cold, mocking voice hit Rupert like a punch.

After that argument, Rupert found out Fiona's grandma was seriously ill.

He realized Fiona had her reasons for being with Darwin.

But his constant attempts to contact her had pissed off Darwin, causing her a lot of trouble.

Rupert knew he messed up.

He tried to make it right, finding medical connections to help Fiona's grandma.

But by the time he found a doctor, Darwin had already hired the best international medical team.

Rupert was crushed.

He was depressed for months, then went abroad.

But Fiona had become his obsession over the years.

When he heard from the media that Darwin was getting married, he rushed back.

Rupert had heard from Thalassa about Fiona's background.

He knew Fiona hated mistresses.

He was sure that even if she hadn't left Darwin yet, she would break up with him because of this.

He didn't care about Fiona's past.

He just wanted to make things right, to rekindle their relationship.

But Rupert didn't expect their reunion to be such a train wreck!
