Chapter 1351
Lately, it had been getting dark earlier.
It was almost pitch black before six.
Fiona rushed upstairs as soon as she got out of the car after a traffic-jammed ride home.
"Mommy!" Before she even stepped out of the elevator, she heard Chicago's excited voice, and then Chicago jumped into her arms.
Fiona smiled and hugged her tight.
Chicago had grown a lot this year, and it was getting a bit tough for Fiona to hold her.
"Sorry, there was some traffic on the way, so I got back late." Fiona kissed Chicago's cheek. "Did you have fun with Charles this time?"
Chicago replied, "Yes! Daddy took us to lots of places. Oh, and Daddy got a gift for Mommy!"
She got down from Fiona and ran towards the living room.
Fiona smiled and looked at Charles, who was standing not far away.
She went over, squatted down, and hugged him tight. "Charles, thanks for all your hard work this time."
"It was okay. Chicago was very well-behaved. She just cried a bit when she woke up early and didn't see Daddy." Charles snuggled into Fiona's embrace. "Mommy, don't worry. Daddy is much better now. He'll be home soon."
Fiona felt a lump in her throat.
She nodded gently and patted Charles's head. "I know."
At that moment, Chicago came running over with a gingerbread cookie. "Mommy, Daddy bought this for you. It's super delicious!"
She handed the beautifully wrapped gift box to Fiona, her big eyes sparkling. "Godfather Kenny also bought one for Godmother Ashton, so this one is just for you."
"Aren't you going to eat it?" Fiona asked with a smile.
Chicago shook her head immediately. "This is what Daddy bought for Mommy. Only Mommy can eat it. I won't eat it!"
Fiona laughed.
"She's been talking about it for over half an hour." Ashton walked over, looking helpless. "Afraid of mixing up what her dad bought with what Kenny bought, she hid it in her little backpack and wouldn't let anyone touch it."
"Of course, it can't be mixed up. This is Daddy's love and longing for Mommy!" Chicago said.
Fiona patted her back. "Yes, Chicago did well! Now, let me put Daddy's love and longing back in the room, okay?"
"Okay, but don't take too long. Dinner is ready." Chicago nodded.
Fiona kissed her, then kissed Charles, and then went upstairs with the bag.
As the door closed, the smile on Fiona's face gradually disappeared.
She looked at the gift box in her hand.
Her fingertips gently caressed it over and over again.
Gingerbread was delicate, and after all the back-and-forth, some of it had crumbled when Fiona opened the box.
She picked up a small piece and put it in her mouth. Tears followed.
Time for Fiona had stretched infinitely since the day she left Cyberia.
A few months felt like years. Because Fiona didn't want Janna and Ashton to worry about her, she had been hiding this pain very well.
The gingerbread melted in her mouth.
She suddenly felt a bit regretful. She should have gone with them.
Fiona didn't let herself get lost in such emotions.
Putting emotions aside, Fiona knew her decision hadn't been wrong. Darwin's treatment process had been too painful.
Even a one-in-a-million chance that it could worsen Darwin's condition was something Fiona couldn't allow to happen.
Fiona carefully placed the gingerbread box on the bedside table.
Then she changed into some comfy home clothes and immediately went downstairs to the dining room.
