Chapter 579 Interview
Fiona paused for a moment.
On the other end of the line, Thalassa seemed on the verge of exploding.
"If this is true, I'm going to confront Darwin, I swear I'll throttle him!”
"Where did you hear that?" Fiona regained her composure and asked.
“She gave an interview to an established media outlet. She was there, showing off her belly, crying her eyes out looking pathetic,” Thalassa said angrily. “I'm on my way to you now. Stay at home and wait for me.”
Honestly, too many similar incidents had happened in the past.
It was hard for her to be perturbed anymore.
The call ended.
Fiona picked up her work phone.
It was from Laura and their colleagues at Monsoon Investment, all talking about Lilian's situation.
It seemed the story had blown up considerably.
Fiona went downstairs.
She ran into Jannas, who was rushing upstairs.
“I'll get in touch with Darwin to verify this first. Please have the PR department on standby,” Fiona said calmly.
“I've already tried calling Darwin. With the earthquake and torrential rain there, the signal is very unstable, and he hasn't been reachable,” Jannas said gravely.
“With as much noise as this event is making, Darwin should be aware of it by now, regardless of the signal issues. He'll find a way to contact me.” Fiona was certain.
“Fiona…” Jannas looked at her, full of worry.
“What is it?” Fiona asked with a resigned smile, “Grandma, I've been through things with Lilian before. Don't worry.”
“If what Lilian says is true, even if you decide to forgive Darwin, I will not stand for it,” Jannas declared coldly.
“I understand.”
Fiona nodded and went to the dining room for breakfast.
She had just sat down when her phone began to vibrate.
It was a call from Darwin.
Fiona's eyes flickered slightly as she answered.
"Honey, she's lying. I've already arranged for the company to prepare a statement and legal notice!" Darwin's voice was filled with urgency and panic. “I've told you, from the beginning, you have been my only one!”
“I know,” Fiona replied.
There was a brief silence on the other end.
“Don't you believe me?”
“I remember you telling me that Lilian had a hysterectomy,” Fiona answered indirectly. “How can someone without a uterus get pregnant?”
Gnashing his teeth in frustration, Darwin responded, "Either that baby bump is fake, or she's been deceiving me with it all this time!"
As a young man, Darwin never imagined he would one day harbor such resentment for Lilian. She had gradually torn apart the gratitude he once felt for her life-saving kindness. Repeatedly, she seemed intent on pushing Darwin into an abyss.
"Darwin, are you really sure that the child isn't yours?" Fiona asked after a moment of contemplation.
Lilian, though occasionally foolish, had managed to play Darwin and many others like pawns over more than a decade. It was highly unlikely that her pregnancy was a sham. It would be too easy to expose.
If she truly was pregnant, a simple DNA test would debunk any lies. Lilian's claims were bold. It was as if she had no fear of a DNA comparison.
"I never touched her! How could she be carrying my child?" Darwin's tone had turned cold. "After all this time, Fiona, do you still not trust me?"
Fiona was silent for a moment.
"Alright, if you're certain the child isn't yours, then deal with her. I don't want Charles and Chicago facing any bizarre complications in the future due to her. You understand?" she said.
"I will," Darwin assured her, and then the call ended.
Fiona's gaze fell on the polenta in front of her, her eyes welling up with a sour, swollen feeling. Although she had known about this for a while now, she hadn't yet to watch Lilian's interview. After pondering for a moment, she opened Twitter.
The Topics List is buzzing with activity. “Lilian's Exclusive Interview” was at the top.
Fiona navigated through the content until she discovered the video. Within its frames, Lilian appeared clad in attire that accentuated her pregnancy, her countenance pallid, a stark departure from her customary glamorous demeanor in public.
"I didn't want things to come to this, but I've hit rock bottom, and I can't take it anymore... I just want Darwin to step up and take responsibility for me and the child," Lilian said tearfully.
"Lilian, did Darwin know about your pregnancy before the wedding?" the interviewer asked, her face full of sympathy.
Lilian shook her head. "It was after I was forced to leave that I discovered I was pregnant."
Many comments floated across the screen at these words.
"This plot sounds familiar. Didn't Fiona have to flee because of her pressure?"
“So, you've been pregnant for quite some time, and instead of telling Darwin, you chose to go public through the media?" the interviewer continued to probe.
Lilian's became frightened. "I was scared!"
"Scared? What are you scared of? Darwin? Or maybe…” The interviewer stopped short, not wanting to delve into more details. But Everyone understood the implication, the person she wanted to mention was Fiona.
Lilian's eyes fell as she quietly confessed her fears, "I'm afraid that telling them would put me and my child in danger. Fiona is not one to be trifled with."
"Do you mean she might harm you? What makes you think that? Has she hurt you before?" the reporter pressed on.
Lilian frowned in anxiety, and she maintained a resolute silence that seemed only to confirm the reporter's suspicions.
"It's just bullying, pure and simple!" the reporter exclaimed with righteous indignation. "After all, she's just a stand-in. How can she have the audacity to push the real heroine to such extremes?"
"There are things I'd rather not discuss anymore. Right now, all I want is for my child and me to live in peace, and for her father to acknowledge her," Lilian said, her voice trembled with emotion. "Just the other day, I saw a photo online of Darwin playing with Chicago. It twisted my heart. I wish my child could be loved by her father just the same."
After she spoke those words, a photo of Darwin and Chicago playing together was displayed.
"A child that he brought into this world, he surely has to take responsibility for, right? Not even the old money families are this cruel," the reporter said, seething. "Fiona, she's been through what you're going through. She should empathize with you, and if she still wants to harm you and your child, then she's truly inhumane."
Fiona let out a cold laugh at the remark, which seemed naive to her. The live chat on the screen was filled with viewers expressing their outrage.
The following Q&A session revolved around Darwin and Lilian's past relationship.
"I heard you saved Darwin's life?" the reporter inquired.
Lilian simply nodded and said, "He fell into a pond at the park, and I happened to be there, so I jumped in and saved him."
Fiona had known that Lilian had once saved Darwin, but the details had eluded her. The accident at the park seemed to jog a memory for her.
"Babe!" Thalassa's voice abruptly shattered Fiona's drifting thoughts.
