Chapter 1197
When people were at the brink of death, they would struggle desperately out of a survival instinct.
Given the bathroom setup and Aiden's height, hanging himself seemed impossible.
This just showed how determined Aiden was to end it all.
Fiona finished reading the documents, feeling a bitter taste in her mouth.
"Have some water," Hubert said, handing her a glass.
Fiona looked up. "You knew Darwin might have inherited Aiden's illness. So when I came to you about Patricia, I walked right into your trap, didn't I?"
"It's not as harsh as you put it, but it did save us some trouble," Hubert replied. "Aiden's death was a regret for my father. So, after I started studying psychology, I kept an eye on Aiden's descendants. After your plane crash, I briefly contacted Mr. Solomon through Ms. Robbins, worried his grief might trigger the illness."
"Were there any signs then?" Fiona asked, frowning.
"Mr. Solomon was just severely depressed, no other symptoms," Hubert said. "I wanted to observe him more, but as he improved, he only allowed his personal doctor near him."
Fiona stayed silent, watching Hubert warily.
Hubert continued, "What caught my attention again was a photo of you two online. I noticed his body movements were off. Some psychological illnesses show physical symptoms."
"What's Darwin's physical symptom?" Fiona asked, though she already had an idea.
"His doctor probably mentioned his injured leg wasn't healing as expected, right?" Hubert asked.
Fiona hesitated, then nodded.
"Has he ever walked normally without a cane?" Hubert pressed.
"Just get to the point," Fiona said.
"In my last consultation with Mr. Solomon, I found he subconsciously believed that only when he was weak and in pain would you stay by his side," Hubert explained. "So, his mind might be keeping his leg injured to keep you around."
Fiona's eyes flickered.
"Mrs. Solomon, I mean no harm to you or Mr. Solomon. I just don't want the tragedy to happen again," Hubert said gently. "You don't need to be so wary of me."
"You could've just told me directly," Fiona said.
"Alright, I admit I wasn't entirely honest, and I apologize," Hubert said sincerely.
Fiona held the document, thinking for a moment before standing up. "Can I take this with me?"
"Yes," Hubert nodded.
Fiona looked at him, her expression complex, with unspoken words on her lips. She turned and walked to the door.
"Mrs. Solomon," Hubert called out.
Fiona turned. "Is there anything else?"
Hubert's eyes were calm and sincere. "I still hope you'll consider bringing Mr. Solomon to my institute for treatment. I believe I can help him return to a normal life."
Fiona said nothing and left.
Burl heard the door and stood up. "Fiona!"
"Let's go home," Fiona said with a faint smile.
"Fiona, if you don't want to smile, then don't. It's scary when you force it," Burl muttered, reaching for her things.
Fiona dodged.
Burl looked confused.
Fiona didn't explain. "Let's go home."
"Okay," Burl nodded, glancing back at Hubert, who gave a polite nod.
Burl frowned, nodding back but not warmly.
They walked straight to the elevator.
