Chapter 695 She Missed Her Daddy.
Chicago closed the door.
The smile on her face slowly disappeared.
Thinking of something, Chicago pouted and walked to the desk, opened a drawer, and took out the phone Darwin had given her before.
Before there was only one friend, Darwin, on her Facebook page, but now there were Uncle and Mommy, Godfather and Godmother, Grandma Janna, and Ethan.
Charles had sent her the photos and videos she took today on his way back.
While shedding tears, Chicago selected the best photos and videos and sent them to the people who still had the nickname "handsome uncle" in her contacts.
After sending the pictures and videos, Chicago sent a voice message.
Holding back her tears, Chicago's cute voice said, "Daddy, today Godfather and Godmother took me, big brother, and Charlotte out to play. I took a lot of beautiful pictures and videos..."
Chicago fell silent for a moment.
Tears rolled down Chicago's cheeks.
"Daddy, there were so many people at the museum today. I'm too short to see the exhibits in front of the crowd. If you were here, you could lift me high..."
Chicago sent out a voice message and stared at the phone screen for a long time.
During this time, she reflected on a lot of things.
She realized that she had been too petty. After finally reuniting with her father, she forgave him, but she didn't want him to know that she had forgiven him so easily.
Chicago still hadn't called him Dad.
Now, she didn't know where he had gone or when he would come back. She didn't know when he would be able to hear the word "Dad" from her.
She carefully put away the phone.
Chicago turned off the light, climbed onto the small bed, and hugged the teddy bear.
Chicago cried for a while before falling into a deep sleep, tears streaming down her face.
That night, Chicago had a dream.
She dreamt of huge waves and her father sinking into the deep sea.
She was extremely anxious, desperately trying to reach out and hold her father's hand.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't utter the word "dad" and couldn't get closer to him.
When she woke up, Chicago's pillow was almost soaked.
To prevent her mother from worrying and getting even more upset, Chicago got up and behaved like the cheerful and adorable child she usually was.
She obediently accompanied her mother for breakfast, and before her mother left, she clung to her and kissed her multiple times before allowing her to go outside.
Then, she went to study with her teacher, Ethan, on time.
"Chicago," Ethan called her after class.
Chicago looked at him and asked, "Yes?"
"Tomorrow is the last lesson, and then I'll go back to my own home," Ethan said.
Chicago drooped her head and said, "Can't you stay at my house forever? Grandma Janna really likes playing chess with you. She'll be sad if you leave."
Their family will be missing one person again. Chicago felt sad, too.
"School is starting soon," Ethan glanced at her and fell silent for a moment. "If you can be the top student in your grade, I'll come back during summer vacation."
"Really?" Chicago perked up.
"Yes." Ethan didn't look up, but he nodded gently.
"I'll be the number one student!" Chicago said confidently.
"Yes." Ethan packed up his things. "Let's go, we'll have dinner."
As they walked out of the study, Ethan felt a bit regretful.
This wasn't how Ethan had originally planned it.
They agreed that tomorrow would be the last lesson, so why did he promise her to come back during summer vacation if she could be the top student?
But then, Ethan thought about how downhearted Chicago seemed today.
When his parents had just passed away, Ethan used to think about them every night, crying all night long.
After crying, Ethan would be just like Chicago today.
Ethan sighed and went back to his own room.
In the evening, Ethan waited for Fiona to come back and told her about ending their tutoring sessions tomorrow.
Fiona didn't pressure Ethan.
"Little Ethan, thank you for helping Chicago during this time," she said gently. "Our family has been through some difficult times, and I've been quite overwhelmed. I am grateful to have you."
Ethan pondered for a moment.
He finally asked a question he should have asked long ago, "Are you doing okay?"
Fiona was slightly taken aback, evidently not expecting Ethan to ask this question.
Her eyes suddenly became teary, and she honestly shook her head. "To be honest, I'm not doing well."
Ethan glanced at her and nodded. "But you will get better."
"Yes." Fiona rubbed his head and said, "You’d better work hard this semester and don't annoy the principal too much. He's already got white hair."
Ethan smiled and nodded. "I understand."
After a short conversation, Ethan went back to his room to rest.
Ethan finished his last winter break class the next day and was sent back home.
The dirty and messy streets, with wires tangled overhead.
Ethan walked slowly forward.
When he reached the doorstep, he unlocked the door and went inside.
The old house was already damp and prone to mold, and after not living there for a while, it emitted an unpleasant, musty smell.
Ethan closed the door and stood in the living room for a moment.
Ethan used to enjoy the quietness, but after his time with Chicago, which was really noisy, he found it unfamiliar to return to his quiet home.
Only when he grew up did Ethan understand why he felt uncomfortable that day.
Ethan had experienced the warmth of a happy family. He had been the center of attention and cared for by so many people, and now he was returning to an empty house where nobody was waiting for him.
Of course, he wouldn't be used to it.
Ethan put down his backpack.
He got some water and diligently cleaned the house's inside and outside.
Then he went back to his room, opened his books, and started catching up on his studies.
The school year began.
Fiona specially spared a day for that.
Christopher personally picked up Charlotte's new school uniform and backpack.
Early in the morning, when he saw Charlotte wearing her brand new school uniform, Christopher couldn't help but cover his face and cry.
This confused Charlotte.
To go to school, of course, she needed a name.
When Christopher found Charlotte, he never planned on raising her.
He always just called her little Charlotte, and she didn't have a proper name.
Christopher racked his brains all night to come up with a name.
And now, Charlotte's full name was Joyce Serenity.
Christopher never received an education. He had spent his whole life in violence and fighting, so he hoped his little Charlotte could live a peaceful life.
Charlotte didn't care much about her name.
She would just go by whatever name her father gave her.
It sounded better than the code name 781021 that her father had given her.
Fiona took Charles to school first.
As soon as the principal saw Charles at the entrance, he immediately came forward.
He had heard about the situation in Charles' family, his exceptional son, and at first, he was so worried that he couldn't eat or sleep, fearing that after such a big change, the child's mother would not let him come to school.
Christopher and Fiona exchanged glances, and the principal's face was full of gratitude. "You can rest assured, we will take good care of Charles," he said.
"There's no need to go out of your way. Just treat him like usual," Fiona said gently, then bent down to look at Charles. "Son, I am taking your sister and Charlotte to school now."
"Goodbye, Mommy." Charles nodded.
Then Charles hugs Fiona initiatively.
