Chapter 340 Promises
Thalassa furrowed her brows subconsciously.
Kenny gently caressed the back of her hand with the pad of his thumb in an effort to console her. “Don’t mind them. We should pay our respects to your father first.”
Thalassa turned to Kenny.
His eyes, tranquil like a serene lake, seemed to instantly soothe her smoldering emotions.
She nodded in agreement.
Together, they moved past the Walker family and walked toward her father’s tombstone.
There were many offerings stacked in front of the grave.
Kenny noticed a groundskeeper tidying up nearby and called her over in his gentle manner.
He handed her a hundred-dollar tip, asking her to clear away all the items the Shaw family had brought.
Then Thalassa took out some wipes and meticulously cleaned the altar in front of the tombstone before laying out their offerings with care.
She maintained a respectful silence throughout.
Once everything was in place, she gazed at the tombstone, on which her father’s beaming portrait smiled back. He wasn’t fond of being photographed. They had to crop this picture from a snapshot taken with her.
Thalassa reached out, tenderly touching her father's smiling face on the stone.
“I’ve been swamped since I got back, Dad. I only made it out to see you today,” Thalassa’s voice came out soft and sweet. “I have some good news – I got married!”
She beamed a smile, flaunting her wedding ring.
In her heart, she continued the conversation.
‘He’s so good to me. He’s warm and adorable, and he gives me his undivided support.’
After a moment, Thalassa got up and nudged Kenny a little closer, "Isn’t your son-in-law a catch? He’s not just easy on the eyes, though. He’s smart, he comes from a family of genuine class and harmony..." Thalassa rattled off a string of compliments.
Kenny stood there, dazed.
Did Mrs. Walker really think so highly of him?
He was elated. He was overjoyed!
"Hello, Dad!" Kenny interjected, "I'm Kenny. Here’s a bit about me and my resume."
Kenny pulled out a small notebook and a pen from his pocket.
Thalassa asked, "What’s that?"
"I read somewhere that writing a message to a loved one and placing it with them can be a way to feel connected," Kenny explained with a gentle smile.
"Is that so?" Thalassa replied, a little baffled. But she quickly pointed to where they had placed their offerings. “Right over here."
Kenny nodded.
He then wrote a heartfelt message, folded the paper carefully, and placed it beside the flowers they had brought.
Watching, Thalassa couldn't help but chuckle.
Looking skyward, he thought, "See, Dad? Isn't he just super adorable?"
As Kenny placed the papers down, he had an internal dialog with his late father-in-law. ‘Dad, don’t worry about entrusting Thalassa to me. She won't have to face life's storms alone from now on, I promise. I'll love her, protect her, respect her, and make her the happiest person in the world."
After finishing, he pressed his hands together devoutly.
Just then, a warm breeze swept by, as though it was carrying his wishes into the sky.
"My dad got your letter!" Thalassa exclaimed, patting Kenny on the shoulder joyfully.
Kenny wasn’t sure if spirits really existed, but if believing it made his wife happier, he was willing to embrace that faith.
"Do you think your dad would have liked me?" Kenny looked troubled.
Thalassa, patting his shoulder assuredly, said, "Absolutely!"
Kenny’s worry dissolved into laughter. "Alright, you probably have a lot to tell your dad. I'll go ask about the procedure for transferring grave sites."
Thalassa was surprised by Kenny's decisiveness.
"Should we buy the gravesite first?" Thalassa asked, concerned about its availability.
"Don't worry, I'll find him a peaceful gravesite not too far from us by today," Kenny said.
Thalassa immediately felt relieved.
When Kenny said it would be done, it was as good as done.
"Alright!" Thalassa replied with a beaming smile.
Kenny patted her head. "I'll be right back."
Thalassa watched Kenny walk away and plopped down onto the ground. "What do you think, Dad? He seems pretty solid, right? The truth is, we had a whirlwind wedding. We got married just a few days after we met..."
She began leisurely to tell her father about the whirlwind romance leading up to their marriage.
After Kenny finished checking on some things, he returned.
Thalassa spotted him from a distance and waved enthusiastically.
Kenny felt warmth gather in his chest, and it was incredibly comforting.
He jogged over to Thalassa.
"Have you finished catching up?" he asked.
"Just about," she replied. "Don't we need to go look at cemetery plots? I've already told my dad about the move. We need to get on it."
"Check your phone." Kenny nudged her, pointing to her purse.
Puzzled, Thalassa pulled out her phone and saw several photos from Kenny.
Thalassa opened the files, and the name of the cemetery surprised her. "Crestview Hills? That place isn't open to the public anymore, and it's super expensive!"
Crestview Hills was well-known for its auspicious layout, said to boost prosperity for future generations.
Many celebrities and tycoons wanted to be buried there.
Thalassa had been thinking about moving the gravesite for a while.
Her father’s current grave was far away from her, and upkeep was lacking because it was a more affordable option. She also had to pay the caretaker extra every year to keep the area near her father's gravestone clean.
And the spots were just too cramped...
She had inquired about Crestview Hills, but she never imagined it could be an option.
"They're not selling plots to just anyone anymore, but we aren't 'just anyone'," Kenny said with a chuckle.
"What do you mean?" Thalassa gasped, stunned. "Does your family own that land?"
"Yep," Kenny nodded.
"Your family really does it all, huh?" Thalassa flashed him a thumbs-up, genuinely impressed.
"We're a big family, spread across various industries. My great-aunt is the one who developed the cemetery. About twenty years ago, she figured she was getting on in years and should handle her final arrangements. She wasn't happy with any existing sites and heard that Crestview Hills had good energy, so she just decided to develop her own cemetery."
"Your great-aunt is... pretty cool," Thalassa raised her thumb again.
Kenny caught her thumb and gently held her hand, "Yeah, she certainly is cool."
"When the time comes to pay respects to her, take me along, will you?" Thalassa said.
Kenny shook his head.
Thalassa paused.
Right, of course, Kenny should be the one to suggest such a thing. She had offered to go so eagerly, so a rejection was normal...
"She's still alive," Kenny added, breaking into Thalassa's chain of thoughts.
"What?" Thalassa's face showed sheer surprise.
“And she’s in the pink of health. She passed her yoga instructor certification last year at the impressive age of eighty-five.”
As Kenny clasped her thumb, Thalassa defiantly tried to stick it up.
The gesture drew a laugh from Kenny.
"Alright, say goodbye to your dad, then I'll show you around these plots. You can pick one."
"There’s no need, my dad can choose for himself!"
