Chapter 209 Punishment For Misdeeds
Until Ashton got into the car, Chris stood still, trying to process what had just been said.
"What did she mean by that?"
"Chris, I hope you remember what Ashton just said," Fiona said as she closed the car door, and before heading to the passenger seat, she looked back at Chris, "You know I have ways of leaving you with nothing."
"Violence is one thing, but threats too?" Alice was fuming.
"We're even, aren't we? You attacked someone, covered it up, and then lied about it. How does that make you any better?" Fiona paused, "Though do you and your spouse really think that what's deleted is gone forever?"
Alice was stunned.
Fiona glanced at them both and then got into the car.
The car quickly drove away.
Coming back to her senses, Alice tenderly touched Chris's cheek, "Does it hurt? Your sister is too much. No matter what, you're innocent. Why did she have to be physical with you?"
Chris looked at Alice.
For a brief moment, Alice thought she saw something dreadful in his eyes.
But then it was gone.
"It's nothing," Chris shook his head, "Don't you have something urgent to do? Go ahead, I'll take care of grandma's arrangements, and I'll pick you up when it's done."
"Okay," Alice hugged Chris, "Thank you for handling this."
Chris patted the back of her head, "Off you go now."
Alice departed.
Chris stood still, his cheeks burning with pain.
He lowered his gaze to his hands, the memory of pushing Ashton sharply flashing through his mind. The hurt and disappointment in her eyes as she looked at him tore through Chris's heart.
If he had known earlier that the person injured by Alice's grandmother was Ashton's grandma, he never would have come today.
In the end, it was Alice's grandmother who caused the trouble!
Chris lowered his eyelids, his face gradually turning cold.
People who do wrong must be punished. That's the rule.
Chris promptly took care of the hospital discharge procedures for Alice's grandmother. Alice's grandmother suffered from Alzheimer's disease, along with some chronic conditions that frequently flared up.
Occasionally, she would become violently agitated at home, which is why they spent a considerable amount of money sending her to this hospital.
Chris had heard that a rehabilitation home had been arranged. Alice's mother, clearly frightened and unwilling to take her mother back home, said nothing.
"Chris, just see to the arrangements," she said.
Chris nodded in response and then took Alice's grandmother to a nursing home run by one of his friends.
"Chris, rest assured, anyone you bring in, I'll definitely take good care of them," said the owner.
Chris withdrew his gaze from Alice's grandmother and looked at the man, "No need."
The other man was taken aback.
"You know what I mean," Chris added.
The man then understood and nodded, "Got it, no worries, everything will look proper on the surface."
"Good," Chris said, handing the man a card before leaving the nursing home.
Chris was a meticulous person, but that day, for the first time, he sat alone in his car smoking one cigarette after another, a habit he never allowed himself while driving.
It continued until Alice, having finished her business, called him. Chris looked at the caller ID, his eyes indifferent.
"Are you done with your errands?" he asked, his voice tender.
"Yes, come pick me up!" Alice's voice was sweet.
But it couldn't compare to Ashton's.
"Sorry, I've settled your grandmother and something has come up at the company. I can't come to get you today," Chris said apologetically.
"Oh..." Alice clearly sounded unhappy, "Well, if you're busy, go ahead with your work."
"In a few days when I'm free, I'll take you on vacation," Chris continued.
"That sounds great! Chris, you are the best!"
After hanging up the phone, Chris sat in silence for a moment before furiously hurling his phone against the car window, shattering the glass into a web of cracks.
At that moment, Ashton and Fiona had already taken care of settling Grandma Carey.
"You should have visited sooner to see the state of this ward, and that one over there! No wonder they're run-down, they're also full of lunatics!" Ashton huffed indignantly.
Grandma Carey managed a strained smile.
Then she took hold of Ashton's hand, "I'm fine, it wasn't on purpose. People get sick, you know? Let's just let it go."
Ashton's face immediately darkened.
"Even though your mother cut ties with me after getting remarried, she was good to me in the past, and I hope her marriage lasts happily until the end. If issues arise because of me, I..."
"So, for the happiness of one person, my grandmother has to suffer?" Ashton challenged. "You say she was good to you, weren't you good to her?"
When her mom got married, Grandma Carey gave her almost all the family assets left by Ashton's dad.
She had said her pension and a potential rehiring to teach at a school meant she wouldn't want for anything.
She mentioned that remarriage was hard, and Mom needed to take more to feel secure.
"Listen to me!" Grandma Carey became anxious, her eyes welling up with tears.
Ashton frowned and turned her head away, steadfast in her refusal.
If the other party had shown a good attitude, she might have considered it, but that Alice even tried to frame her grandmother!
Did Ashton not know her grandmother's personality?
Kind and gentle, how could she go out of her way to provoke someone?
She was so sure of her grandmother's innocence she didn't even need to check the CCTV.
"Grandma," Fiona intervened with a cheery smile, "She's being stubborn right now. I'll talk to her. The most important thing for you is to rest!"
Grandma Carey hesitated and finally sighed deeply.
"I'm useless, to have such a fall just walking... I wouldn't have any problems if I didn't have to stay in the hospital." Just then, something seemed to strike her, "Oh no!"
"What's wrong?" Ashton asked urgently.
"The amulet you brought back for me, I left it on that bed!" Grandma Carey was suddenly frantic.
Fiona chuckled, "Ashton, you stay and have dinner with Grandma, I'll go over there."
"I should be the one to go..."
"Forget it, if you run into those two again, you'll probably kill someone."
Whether she would be at a disadvantage or not, Ashton was ready to fight tooth and nail. However, after having her fill of Chris and Alice's affectionate display today, another glance might make her sick!
"Then I'll leave it to you." Ashton said. She hugged Fiona's waist, cajoling, "I'm so grateful you're here today."
"Stop being so clingy." Fiona pushed her head away.
After saying goodbye to Grandma Carey and grabbing the car keys, she left.
Upon returning to the hospital, Fiona quickly found the amulet.
As she was about to leave, she remembered that Mrs. Solomon was also here. After a moment of hesitation, she turned around and went back.
