Chapter 1506
They had a deal.
Ethan would help her take over Wholesome Corporation, and she'd help him take down Darwin.
Now, both missions were accomplished.
Their partnership naturally came to an end.
Ethan knew today was the last stop of the Chicago world tour, so he bought a ticket and headed back to Bay City after a long time away.
For the first time, he set foot in Chicago.
He had imagined many scenarios, but not this one.
Leaving the convention center, Ethan flagged down a cab and went back to his old neighborhood.
A decade had passed; the place had changed a lot. The old house had been torn down seven years ago.
The compensation money from back then was still sitting in Ethan's account.
A new residential complex had been built where the old house once stood. It was a prime location with great schools, making the property very expensive.
His fake fiancée had bought him an apartment there as a reward for a particular year's research achievements.
Ethan stood there for a while.
In the end, he didn't go inside.
He originally wanted to find someone he used to play cards with, but after looking around, he found that the area had been turned into a kindergarten. There was no sign of his old friends.
After wandering around, Ethan hailed another cab to the cemetery where his parents were buried.
He tried several cabs, but when the drivers heard he was going to the cemetery at night, they all refused.
Finally, he found a brave driver, who turned out to be quite the chatterbox.
The driver asked Ethan about all his family members during the ride.
When they arrived, Ethan tipped him an extra two hundred dollars, leaving the driver delighted as he walked alone into the night.
It was late.
Naturally, he couldn't enter the cemetery.
He stayed at a nearby motel for the night.
Before dawn, Ethan bought some incense and candles and walked into the old cemetery.
Earlier in the year, his fake fiancée's grandfather had passed away, and Ethan had attended the funeral.
Their family's cemetery was quite grand.
He wondered if he could also move his parents to a more prestigious place.
Even though he hadn't visited in a long time, Ethan had the route memorized.
It didn't take long.
He found his parents' gravestone.
To Ethan's surprise, compared to the surrounding graves, his parents' gravestone was exceptionally clean, with not a single weed in sight.
He had been paying extra each year to have the cemetery staff maintain his parents' grave.
But he hadn't expected them to be so diligent.
Coincidentally, the caretaker walked by.
Seeing Ethan, he paused, "You here to pay respects?"
"Yeah," Ethan replied.
"Relative?" the caretaker asked curiously.
"Son."
The caretaker's expression changed, muttering something about the son being missing.
"You know, it's been years, and you never came to visit. If it weren't for your relatives coming by occasionally and paying extra to the cleaners to look after the grave, who knows how tall the weeds would be!" the caretaker said with some disdain.
Ethan was taken aback.
His expression turned cold.
Though he was good-looking, his lack of expression made him appear intimidating.
"What relatives? I paid extra for you to maintain it, didn't I?"
The caretaker was stunned; he didn't know about that. "It was a very pretty girl," the caretaker said, scratching his nose. "You'd have to ask the finance department about the payments. I'm just the gatekeeper; I don't know about that!"
