Chapter 1402
Hubert had tried every treatment plan he could think of, and Darwin was going along with all of them.
Hubert kept his eyes down, ignoring the kid curled up in the corner of the room.
"Aiden" was always there.
If the treatment got too rough on any given day, another version of Darwin would show up.
But as his memories slowly came back, the other Darwin seemed to be getting weaker.
About those memories.
Darwin had gone from flat-out rejecting his resurfacing memories to now, where he found them distasteful but not completely unbearable.
Hubert had said that the existence of the other Darwin stemmed from his deep-seated self-loathing. As Darwin began to accept his past self, the other Darwin would naturally fade away.
But the real trouble was never the other Darwin.
It was the seemingly harmless "Aiden" who always managed to put Darwin in danger without him realizing it.
Lately, Aiden appeared increasingly pitiful, as Darwin ignored him day after day.
The scars on Aiden's body multiplied, and he grew increasingly gaunt.
When Darwin realized he had the same illness as Aiden.
His deepest, unacknowledged fear was that Aiden had brutally killed Marisole during a fit of his illness.
But now, Hubert's words echoed in Darwin's mind.
Aiden's illness had been under control until he took the wrong medication, which complicated and worsened his condition.
If it weren't for Odette's malicious actions.
Aiden could have managed with medication. With the rapid advancement of medical technology, Aldrich's research wouldn't have stopped. Maybe a cure could have been found in five or ten years.
Aiden could have led a normal life.
So could Darwin.
His condition was far less severe than Aiden's.
Back then, the only thing keeping Aiden grounded was Marisole.
But Darwin was different. In addition to Fiona, he had Charles and Chicago as his motivations to get better.
A fear lingered in his heart.
Just as Hubert had mentioned, it suddenly lifted.
Darwin even felt that the air he breathed was fresher.
He slowly sat up.
For the first time in months, his gaze settled on the child curled up across from him.
Darwin said, "Let's talk."
The child looked up at Darwin, surprised.
"Can you tell me why you're here with me?" Darwin asked.
The child lowered his eyes, his skin blue from the cold. He said, "You said you wanted to protect me."
"Yeah, I wanted to protect you, but you ended up putting me in here, making me like this." Darwin pointed to his face. "That's not right."
"I didn't." The child shook his head repeatedly.
"You came into my mind because of that diary," Darwin continued. "I was too young then. Grandma's cruelty towards you and her kindness and love towards me made me feel inexplicably guilty. Later, when I found out you were my biological father and that Grandma had gone against your wishes to have me, that guilt only deepened."
The child trembled all over, looking at Darwin as if he were terrified.
