Chapter 243 Role Reversal

The feeling of complete freedom was simply too comfortable.
Breathing seemed even smoother than usual.

Kenny had invested in a lot of real estate in Bay City.
He picked out some of the best properties in terms of location and layout, and Charles took her to see them.
Three of the properties hit all of Ashton's preferences perfectly: the neighborhood's ambiance, the geographical location, and the design.
In the end, Ashton chose the one that was most convenient for Kenny's commute to work.
After selecting the house, Kenny handed her a few forms to think over and fill out at her leisure.
They were all about the interior design and functional requirements.
Handing over the forms, Kenny said earnestly, "This will be our home for a long time to come. I want to make sure that Mrs. Walker feels completely satisfied and comfortable. It would make me very happy."

Ashton briefly shared with Fiona the process of choosing their new home.
Stirring the frosting on her cake, she said, "Honestly, when I'm with Kenny, it all feels so surreal. Are there really such people in this world?"
"Yes, there are, and you've met one," Fiona said with a smile.
Ashton's happiness was evident.
In just a couple of days, her whole demeanor had changed.
"Oh, right!"
Ashton suddenly slapped her palm.
"What's the deal with you and Darwin? You were caught French kissing!" Ashton said, reaching for the photos, but Fiona pressed down her hand, "He was shameless, it was against my will!"
Ashton gave her a look that said, 'Keep making up stories. You think I don't have the pictures?'
The netizens commented on the passion of the kiss.
Ashton even saw that Fiona's eyes were bloodshot!
Was that supposed to be forced?
"Damn internet!" Fiona cursed through clenched teeth in the end.
If not for the internet, where would all these troubles come from?
"Honey, I'll say it again, life is short, just a few decades. If you want to make amends, then do it. We can deal with the future later!"

After cutting ties with the Shaw family and her mother, and her whirlwind marriage to Kenny, Ashton had come to a realization.
All the overthinking, all the careful planning.
If you're doomed, no amount of scheming can save you.
If something is meant for you, no amount of resistance can change the outcome.
It's better to follow your heart.
Who knows, it might open up a whole new world.
"I get it. I need to finish this project first, and he has to deal with the old lady's affairs. We'll talk about it later," Fiona said, taking a bite of the cake.
After years of not indulging in this treat.
The cake she once loved now felt too sweet.
Just like the cake, people can change.
Leaving the studio.
Fiona and Ashton had planned to go out for a Western meal.
But considering Fiona's face was now exposed online and the risk of being recognized, they decided to grab something casual instead.
Late at night.
After taking a shower, Fiona opened WhatsApp to find over a dozen unread messages from Darwin.
Apart from trying to explain that the new trending topic had nothing to do with him, he sent pictures of strange little trees, rocks, and even ants relocating...
The last message was from half an hour ago.
"Wife, Igot my shot."
It was just text, no emoticons, but to Fiona, it seemed as if Darwin was fishing for praise.
Fiona thought for a moment and replied, "Good."
Darwin immediately responded, "Have you finished work?"
"Yeah," Fiona sent back.
Now, it seemed like their roles had reversed.
In the past, she would send him countless messages, and he would either not reply or just send a few words.
When he was impatient, he would send a voice message.
Now, it was Darwin's turn.
It was a strange, indescribable feeling.
"Wife, I have to go on a business trip for a few days, and there's no one to water the plants at home. Could you stop by?" Darwin sent another message.
Fiona felt a headache coming on.
She didn't reply.
Turning off her phone and the lights, she lay down.
Ashton had just dried her hair when a message from Kenny came.
"Are you asleep?"
Ashton quickly replied, "Not yet!"
"I'm downstairs at your place," Kenny texted back.
Ashton peered out the window and saw Kenny leaning against his car, looking at his phone.
A surge of joy enveloped her.
She typed back, "Be right down!"
After sending the message, Ashton tiptoed out of her apartment, down the stairs, and opened the door.
Kenny looked up, his tired face breaking into a smile.
"Is something wrong this late?"
Ashton ran up to him.
She was of average height, but Kenny towered over her.
Kenny looked down at her, "I thought, if you weren't asleep, we could see each other one more time before bed."
Ashton felt like she was floating.
She had never experienced this during her time with Chris.
So this is what a normal relationship feels like...
"Mr. Walker, I've just realized you're a bit clingy~" Ashton teased.
Kenny smiled and nodded, neither confirming nor denying, "Oh, I almost forgot to give you this."
He opened the car door, took out an envelope, and handed it to Ashton.
"What's this?" Ashton took it.
Kenny gestured for her to look inside.
"All mysterious," Ashton said, intrigued. She opened the envelope and took out the contents.
Upon seeing what it was, she looked at Kenny in astonishment, "A land transfer deed?"
"A token of my commitment," Kenny replied.
Ashton glanced at it again, "This is the plot we were discussing... Kenny, this is too much!"
"Too much?" Kenny raised an eyebrow slightly, "But I feel it's still not enough to marry you."
Ashton looked at him, sure he wasn't joking.
"Kenny..." Ashton swallowed, "Am I really that good?"
Such an expensive ring, a land worth hundreds of millions...
"Why else would I go to such lengths to marry you?" Kenny said with certainty, "Stop thinking; it's time to sleep."
He gently turned Ashton around and nudged her forward.
Ashton felt like she was walking on clouds.
After a few steps, she turned back to look at Kenny.
After thinking it over...
Kenny had given her so much, both tangible and intangible.
And she hadn't given him anything in return.
Ashton walked back.
"Hm?" Kenny looked puzzled.
Ashton thought for a moment, then beckoned with her finger.
Kenny bent down to her, and then Ashton kissed him on the cheek, "Goodnight."
After that, she ran back inside like she was escaping, her heart pounding like thunder after closing the door.
Outside, Kenny was left stunned by the kiss.
It took him a while to stand up straight, touching his cheek.
That night, Kenny didn't sleep well. Early the next morning, he was already urging the contractor renovating the old house to speed up. Faster! Even faster!
