Chapter 654 I Regret It
Henry followed Darwin out of the prison.
"I never imagined Miss Robbins's death was linked to this," Henry's voice was somber. "But by the time she returned, Hathaway had been ousted from Armie. How could she still have ties with Miss Robbins?"
A steely glint flickered in Darwin's eyes.
"Hathaway and Lilian knew each other before I was even engaged to her. Later, she targeted Fiona. Lilian was behind it all," Darwin's voice was low and grave.
"Oh my God!" Henry exclaimed, taken aback.
"Alright, you head back and rest. Be cautious coming and going lately. I'll arrange for some bodyguards for you," Darwin's tone remained deep.
Henry nodded. "What about Secretary Woods?"
"I'll speak with her when I return," Darwin's voice remained steady.
"Understood."
With that, Henry departed into the rain.
Darwin gazed up at the dark sky.
'Who would go to such lengths to avenge Hathaway?
'Old Ross?
'Her mother?
'Or her siblings?'
Logically, none of them would dare provoke him for Hathaway's sake.
Six years ago, Darwin and the Ross family could have clashed, but now, Solomon held most of the family's economic power.
The Ross family was no longer a match for Darwin.
If Lilian's death was discreet revenge, Alexander's and Sebastian's were brazen challenges.
If the Ross family aren't willing to take the risk, then who will?
Perhaps it's the Hathaway-connected nobles with suspicious backgrounds.
Darwin's expression darkened considerably.
Whoever they were, he vowed to root out every last rat in the sewers, one by one, to bring solace to the families of Alexander and Sebastian.
Before heading home, Darwin stopped by the apartment, showered, changed clothes, and then returned to Emerald Pool.
The elevator ascended straight to the master bedroom, but Darwin noticed Fiona was absent.
Subconsciously anxious, he hurried to the children's floor.
Upon entering Chicago's room, he found Fiona curled up on Chicago's bed.
Relief flooded Darwin as he approached her.
Gently lifting her, Fiona stirred from her light slumber.
Seeing Darwin, her vigilant expression softened, and she leaned into his embrace, murmuring, "Is everything taken care of?"
"Yeah," Darwin replied softly.
He carried Fiona back to the master bedroom.
"Why did you change clothes again?" Darwin settled Fiona on the bed, and she clung to him, tugging at his shirt collar. "Spring styles, did you go back to the apartment?"
"Yeah, I didn't want to bring any odors back, so I freshened up before returning," Darwin explained.
"Do you have to rush around like this? Aren't you tired?" Fiona sounded helpless. "Even if you had a smell, I'd still let you in."
Darwin chuckled.
"Don't tarnish my reputation out there. People might think Darwin's wife is a tyrant who won't even let him shower at home," Fiona teased.
Darwin laughed heartily.
"Isn't that a good thing? If people fear me and know I fear you, they won't dare to mess with you!" Darwin leaned in to kiss Fiona.
"Wife, how about inviting Charlotte to stay with us?" After a few kisses, Darwin suddenly suggested.
Fiona looked surprised. "Aren't you afraid of her anymore?"
"Chicago seems to like her," Darwin reasoned. "Besides classmates, he doesn't have any sisters. If he likes her, why not let her come over?"
"Yeah, I'll talk to Christopher tomorrow."
Darwin rested atop Fiona, holding her tightly, his cheek against her chest, listening to her heartbeat.
"Are those deceased people important to you?" Fiona sensed Darwin's somber mood.
After all these years, it was the first time she'd seen him work overnight for his subordinates.
"They meant a lot to me." Darwin paused. "Honey, they were killed because of me, it's a massacre."
Fiona was stunned. "A massacre?"
"Yes, two families, one with eight members and the other with twenty-seven," Darwin explained.
Fiona's brows furrowed immediately. No wonder Darwin visited them overnight.
"Who did it?" Fiona inquired immediately.
"I'm still investigating." Darwin's voice carried weariness. "Darling, have I been too ruthless and extreme in my previous actions?"
She was caught off guard and couldn't formulate a proper response.
"Well, while there were times you were indeed, it was usually in response to provocation. You wouldn't harm anyone without reason," Fiona reassured gently.
"I regret it," Darwin sighed.
Darwin had never envisioned such a good life before. A loving family, a wonderful wife like Fiona, and smart, adorable children like Charles and Chicago. The thought that his past actions could endanger his family now filled him with remorse.
"Darwin," Fiona stroked his head tenderly. "Don't dwell on it anymore. Go change into your pajamas; I'll cuddle you to sleep."
However, Darwin remained motionless.
Darwin lingered in the embrace before rising to change into his pajamas.
Back in bed, the couple held each other close.
Darwin was certain Hathaway was behind the massacre of Lilian, Alexander, and Sebastian. Yet, lacking evidence, confronting the Ross family was mere speculation.
After four hours of sleep, Darwin woke up.
He promptly instructed Mike to heighten security inside and outside Emerald Pool and to inspect daily arriving vehicles for hidden explosives.
With arrangements settled, Xavier returned.
His facial injuries still healing, Xavier's features remained bandaged.
Initially, Christopher offered to cover Xavier's shifts out of guilt, but Xavier faced a career dilemma. He feared being replaced if Christopher took over.
So, he adamantly refused, insisting on working despite his injuries.
"Mr. Solomon, the sketch artist is here," Xavier informed.
Darwin had enlisted the best criminal sketch artist, capable of recreating faces with over ninety percent accuracy from descriptions.
Darwin accepted the folder from him.
"The first sketch is of the killer, the second of the rescuer. Neither resembles an Armie resident, according to facial features and bone proportions," Xavier remarked.
"Have they cross-referenced with the criminal database?" Darwin inquired.
Xavier nodded. "No matches found."
"Show these faces to those monitoring near Alexander's and Sebastian's homes. Have them watch for these individuals before and after the incidents."
Why target Alexander and Sebastian separately?
Darwin suspected it was likely the same perpetrator.
"Understood!" Xavier replied promptly. He carefully photographed the sketches to avoid distortion and sent them to colleagues scrutinizing surveillance footage.
