Chapter 1410
It was different from when Darwin was missing.
For the past six months, Fiona had been sending just one message a day, her emotions stable, each one starting with "Today is the Nth day since you went for treatment."
Until the last message.
"Today is the 299th day since you went for treatment. Hubert brought bad news, and after much thought, I decided to send your old phone to you. Darwin, if you must give those five years any meaning, I hope it's to motivate you to come back to us more positively, rather than leaving me in indefinite fear."
Darwin listened to this voice message repeatedly.
After a while, he exited Fiona's chat and clicked on his daughter's profile picture.
Chicago's messages weren't as frequent as Fiona's, about one or two a day.
When Darwin was missing, every night before bed, she would send Darwin a message.
Opening the first one, Darwin heard Chicago suppressing her sobs, saying, "Daddy, I miss you so much. I'm scared every day. When will you come back to hug me?"
Then, she couldn't hold back her crying.
Darwin's heart was breaking as he listened.
On Christmas, she cried, "Daddy, you're a bad guy. You lied. You promised we'd spend Christmas together. I prepared everything. Where are you? "
Half a month later.
"Today, I saw Mommy secretly crying again. The servants were whispering, saying you're dead, saying Charles and I are so pitiful. Daddy, are you really dead? What should Mommy do? Chicago doesn't like Mommy crying. I don't blame you for breaking your promise or for not wanting Charles and me before. Daddy, please don't die. Come back to Mommy, please."
A few days later.
"Daddy, today Mommy told me you went missing in the sea while saving her. Honestly, I'm kind of happy. Stuart also went missing in the sea back then, and he came back alive. You will too, right?"
"Mommy said many people know you went missing in the sea. When I go back to school, I might hear a lot of mean things, but don't worry. Before you come back, I'll be your super brave daughter. Mommy taught me how to deal with bad guys, and I've already learned!"
"Daddy, today Lydia made the sweet soup you love. The first sip made me miss you so much. I hope you're doing well and come back to us soon."
"Daddy, Ethan is too strict. I accidentally made the same mistake three times on one problem, and he made me write it 20 times. My hand is so sore. Do you think he doesn't know my hand is meant for drawing?"
"Daddy, Ethan is indeed an excellent tutor. I got first place in my grade! Mommy made a big album for my certificates. When you come home, you'll see it. By the way, spring is here, and the fruit trees at Stuart's farm are blooming. Daddy, why haven't you found your way home yet?"
After Darwin went missing, Chicago rarely cried, maybe twice a month.
Darwin knew that must be when she missed him terribly.
The rest of the time, Chicago was like a happy little songbird, joyfully sharing and complaining.
She said "I miss you" so many times.
Darwin laughed and cried throughout, especially when his daughter mentioned scraping her knee, gravel getting into the wound, and the teacher treating it while she winced in pain. Darwin's heart ached with her.
After reading his daughter's messages.
Darwin finally clicked on Charles's Facebook.
There were only three messages.
The day after Darwin's accident.
Charles sent his first Facebook message: [When are you coming home?]
The second message was on New Year's: [Merry Christmas.]
The third message, also unread, was the last one. It was a video.
Little Charles sat in front of the camera.
"This is the 100th day since you went missing. With my limited understanding, in such harsh conditions, being missing for so long, you should be presumed dead." His young voice spoke words far beyond his age.
