Chapter 12
Water was tricking down in the bathroom, and this autumn night was already getting cold. However, Darwin was still taking a cold shower.
Fiona's every action and expression today replayed in his mind, particularly the look in her teary eyes, as well as the humiliation, fear, and despair she felt as she stared at him. Darwin was growing more anxious. At that moment, the doorbell rang incessantly, making his frustration grow. He cursed, turned off the water, put on his bathrobe, and walked out quickly. Opening the door, he saw it was Wyatt.
"What's up?" Darwin asked coldly.
“Just now, I saw Ms. Fiona near the elevator!”
Upon hearing Fiona's name, Darwin's expression grew even more unpleasant, as if he was about to close the door.
"Her dress was torn, and she seemed to have been crying; she looked so pitiful." Wyatt held the door, hastily explaining.
Darwin's heart sank at once. He fell silent for a moment. Furrowing his brow, he asked, "What did she say?"
“She said…you assaulted her," Wyatt said slowly.
Darwin clenched his fists. Assaulted? Was that considered assaulting? He had done far worse things before, so why was it considered assaulting now? Darwin couldn't understand the reasons his actions were acceptable in the past but not this time. Could everything go back to the way it was if he wasn’t marrying her?
Darwin's heart suddenly trembled as the thought formed in his head. How was it possible not to marry her?
The Ross family and the Solomon family’s alliance was a win-win business. How could he not marry Fiona? That would be absurd! He must have been driven crazy by Fiona's unusual behavior to even think about it.
"Anything else?" Darwin looked up and attacked with an unwavering aura.
Wyatt started feeling a little frightened. They had grown up together since they were young. Darwin had always been decisive, and that trait had become even more pronounced in recent years. Wyatt gradually developed a sense of awe for him.
"No..."
Darwin slammed the door shut. He walked to the sofa and sat by the window. After a long while, fireworks celebrating Harold's birthday began to explode in the sky outside the window. Darwin's gaze fell not far away on a pearl earing on the carpet. In his mind, an image appeared, showing its owner wearing it.
Fiona returned to the room, took off her gown, and immediately entered the bathroom.
Soon, warm water was pouring down on her.
Someone else had to help Darwin cool down. She thought if Bella would finally get what she wanted tonight. Suddenly, an image appeared in her mind.
Nausea washed over Fiona. She vigorously rubbed the areas that Darwin had touched until her skin turned red. Upon exiting the bathroom, she noticed her phone lying on the floor, displaying six missed calls. Two were from Harold, and four were from Ashton.
She replied to Ashton's WhatsApp message, saying, "I was showering."
After considering it, she called Harold back.
After a brief ringing, Harold answered the call, "Fiona, come to the window quickly, the fireworks show is about to start!"
Fiona was exhausted, but out of politeness, she replied gently, “Okay, thanks for reminding me.”
"Have you reached the window?" Harold asked excitedly.
Fiona stood up and walked slowly to the window, saying, “I’m here.”
"Alright, you can start now!"
Fiona was taken aback. Was Harold waiting for her to start the fireworks show? With a whoosh, the fireworks instantly illuminated the night sky, displaying beautiful and stunning colors.
"Fiona, do you like it?" Harold asked.
Fiona felt immense grievance as something seemed to have stung at her heart.
"It's beautiful. Thank you, Harold."
After a pause, she remembered that it was Harold's birthday today and added, "Happy birthday, Harold."
Harold was certainly happy. The joy of being twenty years old was unprecedented. Originally, he was regretful that he couldn't spend his birthday on the dream-like Black Beach this year.
But the heavens were kind to him, and things took a turn. A beautiful princess-like girl unexpectedly entered his ordinary life like a fairytale. This was the best birthday gift.
Not far away, Harold's parents stood together. Looking at Harold, they both smiled while holding their phones.
"I heard your son is having a fiery time with a mysterious woman tonight," Harold's mother, Vivian Klein, looked at her son with worry on her face.
His father, Roderick Klein didn’t care.
"What's wrong with men having multiple women? Let him have his fun. Once the business alliance is settled, he can focus on it later."
Vivian remained silent. In her heart, she cursed Roderick thoroughly, “What a rotten man. His true nature is beyond redemption, and he still wants to be a bad influence to my son?”
Ashton's driver, driving his SUV, waited at the dock.
Darwin was the first to leave. When he was about to get into his car, he caught sight of the chauffeur in Ashton’s car out of the corner of his eye. He subconsciously glanced over, and then his eyes dimmed. This license plate was the same one that took Fiona away from the company last time.
Darwin glanced at the driver's seat. A thin middle-aged man in a leather jacket was watching a video on his phone.
"Mr. Darwin?" The driver cautiously called out to Darwin.
Darwin withdrew his gaze and got into the car coldly. He had figured it out last night. Since it was already over, Fiona's life has nothing to do with him anymore. He would differentiate between Lilian and Fiona, and he wouldn't mistakenly direct his feelings for Lilian onto Fiona anymore.
Soon, Darwin’s car left the pier.
Ashton remained with Fiona and got off as well. The driver noticed them and immediately turned off his phone, opened the car door, and ran over.
“Uncle Tom, this leather jacket is cool!" Ashton patted the driver's shoulder.
The driver blushed instantly, and he shyly scratched his head. "My daughter bought it for my birthday. Please don't laugh at me, Mr. Ashton."
"Fiona, I feel uncomfortable!" Ashton turned his head to look at Fiona. He must have had a lot to drink; his eyes couldn't focus now.
"Be good and get in the car. You’re going to feel better inside.” Fiona coaxed.
Ashton nodded obediently. Fiona helplessly assisted him into the car, fastened his seatbelt, then closed the door, preparing to get in from the other side. Just as she reached the door, someone called her from behind, making her turn around.
She saw Harold running toward her in a sports outfit and a messy head of curls. Before leaving, Fiona texted Harold to express her gratitude and bid farewell out of courtesy. When Harold ran up to her, he bent down with his palms on his knees, gasping for breath and unable to say a word.
"Mr. Harold, why are you..." Fiona was startled.
"Just call... call me Harold." Harold said laboriously.
Fiona was amused by his lovely appearance, "Alright, Harold."
Harold tried to catch his breath for a moment.
"I'll see you off." Harold stood up straight. He was quite tall, and when he stood straight and looked at Fiona, he had to lower his gaze.
Fiona didn’t know what to feel about that.
"And this." Harold handed Fiona the paper bag in his hand, with his family's company logo on it. "It's a return gift for my birthday party."
"I can't accept this!" Fiona said and approached Harold a bit, lowering her voice, "I just tagged along and I didn't prepare a gift for you..."
Harold interrupted with a smile. "It's okay, you can make up for the birthday gift later."
After a pause, he seemed to remember something and added, "And the meal you mentioned!"
