Chapter 46 The Scene of Betrayal?
The next morning, Dagwood threw on a slick black suit, hair all neat, and those gold-rimmed glasses making him look like some kind of fancy professor.
He was zoning out when he spotted Fiona in her black down jacket from a distance.
She jogged over.
Her nose was all red from the cold, and her eyes had this misty look.
The passenger door swung open.
She hopped in, rubbing her red hands. "It's freezing out there!"
The car's heater was blasting.
Fiona started to warm up after a bit.
"Got you breakfast," Dagwood said, handing it over.
Fiona figured it was probably some boring porridge or something.
But when she opened it, she was floored. "You made this?"
"Yep," Dagwood nodded. "Dig in."
"Dagwood, you used to blow up the kitchen, and now you're a chef?" Fiona was shocked.
"Food abroad sucked, so I had to learn," Dagwood said, starting the car.
They had a two-hour drive to the cemetery ahead.
Fiona, full and cozy, started to doze off.
Dagwood handed her a small pillow.
She hugged it and was out like a light.
Some country jazz played softly in the background, setting a chill vibe.
Dagwood kept sneaking glances at Fiona.
He'd blurted out something about marriage yesterday.
But after thinking it over all night, he didn't regret it one bit.
Now, he was all about figuring out how to get Fiona to say yes.
They pulled up to the cemetery.
The sun was out, and it wasn't as cold.
The usual caretaker was off today.
Some lady Fiona didn't know was in the office.
Seeing Fiona, she pulled out her phone, checked something, and her eyes lit up.
As soon as Fiona left, she dialed a number labeled "Money."
The cemetery's pines were tall and lush.
Dagwood laid down flowers and poured some wine, while Fiona cleaned two tombstones. "Mom, you remember Dagwood, right? You always liked him best when we were kids!"
Dagwood listened.
He remembered Carla's teasing. "Dagwood, if she doesn't do her homework and you don't let me scold her, what if she grows up useless? Will you marry her then?"
Back then, Dagwood was super shy.
Everyone around was teasing.
But he still stiffened his neck, blushing, and said, "I'll marry her! Just don't hit her!"
Dagwood clasped his hands together.
He bowed to Carla. "Aunt Carla, I'm here to keep my promise. Please bless me to marry Fiona!"
Then he bowed to Fiona's grandparents.
He prayed sincerely, "I'll treat Fiona right and never let her suffer alone again. Please bless me to make this happen!"
Fiona noticed Dagwood was quiet and looked back at him.
Seeing him standing straight like a pine tree, hands clasped, eyes closed, looking all serious, Fiona thought he might be talking nonsense to her grandparents.
She turned back and quickly prayed in her heart. 'Mom, Grandpa, Grandma, don't listen to Dagwood! I don't want to burden anyone!'
After praying, she stood up.
She interrupted Dagwood's prayer. "Dagwood, want some ice cream?"
A moment later, Dagwood, looking all serious, held a cone of ice cream.
Fiona, thinking about her pregnancy, grabbed a roasted corn instead. "Every time I come here, I get ice cream. It's weird, but it always tastes sweeter here."
Dagwood glanced at her, unwrapped his ice cream, and took a bite.
He shivered from the cold.
Seeing this, Fiona burst out laughing.
Seeing her laugh, Dagwood relaxed.
"You look so beautiful when you smile. You should do it more often!" he said, gently picking a corn kernel from her hair.
Fiona's smile faded a bit. "Childhood was the best."
Back then, love was simple and constant. She never had to worry about anyone leaving her.
"Don't worry, things will get better." Dagwood patted her head. "Come on, I'll take you to get something delicious!"
Fiona opened her mouth, wanting to say something.
She looked back.
Behind her, a beam of light formed by the Tyndall effect was about to envelop her mom's and grandparents' tombstones.
Fiona thought, 'I'll talk to Dagwood when we get back.'
As she turned her gaze back, Fiona saw the lady again, who was holding her phone, doing something.
Seeing Fiona, she smiled awkwardly and then went to the other side.
Fiona thought she was taking pictures of the Tyndall effect light.
She didn't think much of it and slowly walked away with Dagwood.
On the way, Dagwood talked a lot about Fiona's childhood.
Fiona kept laughing so much her cheeks were sore from smiling.
So, she was this mischievous and cute as a kid?
Before leaving, Dagwood paid the management fee at the entrance.
He turned around and saw Fiona's down jacket unzipped.
He gently zipped it up for her. "Be careful not to catch a cold."
"I'm not that fragile," Fiona muttered.
Dagwood added, "I asked the doctor who checked you out. She said your health isn't great. If you don't take care of yourself, you'll suffer in the late stages of pregnancy."
"Got it." Fiona nodded helplessly, looking like she was pouting.
Darwin got out of the car and saw this scene.
His blood seemed to freeze instantly.
That day, he not only contacted the caretaker.
Before leaving, he also bribed two other people. To ensure they did their job well, he gave them $300,000 on the spot.
Today, one of them contacted him.
Darwin was on his way to the airport, canceled his work, and rushed over.
He hadn't thought he'd see this scene.
He walked towards Fiona with a chilling aura.
Dagwood, facing the road, saw Darwin first.
Fiona, seeing him look behind her, turned around too.
Then she froze.
"What's wrong?" Dagwood asked, alarmed.
"Nothing, Dagwood, let's go quickly." Fiona instinctively grabbed Dagwood's arm.
"Fiona!" Darwin shouted.
Dagwood shielded Fiona behind him. "Sir, you..."
"Get out of the way!" Darwin grabbed Dagwood's collar and pushed him aside.
Dagwood, unprepared, lost his balance and fell to the ground.
"Dagwood!" Fiona, fearing Dagwood was hurt, immediately went to check on him.
But Darwin grabbed her by the nape and pulled her back, gritting his teeth. "If you take one more step towards him, I'll make sure he disappears without a trace."
