Chapter 424 Direct Assault
The couple was being sickeningly sweet.
Meanwhile, in a hidden room
Jannie watched the surveillance footage; her teeth gritted at the sight of Ken and Alice's coy behavior.
"Why don't you just kill them?!" She turned and yelled at the people in the room. "I don't need your protection. This pair of scoundrels killed my husband, and our boss's fate is unknown. You should be eliminating them!"
"I'm sorry, we only follow the old lady's instructions," one of the bodyguards responded gravely. "Our task is to ensure you and the young masters are safely handed over to Chelsea."
"Will she come?" Jannie asked in despair. "And what good will it do if she does? These heartless monsters have gone on a killing spree. Haven't you seen the news? She's even been stripped of her inheritance."
The bodyguards were in despair over the current situation.
Stuart's fate was uncertain and had the old lady not sensed something was amiss, they would likely have perished in last night's car bombing as well.
"At least with Miss Chelsea, you and your kids can survive," another bodyguard whispered low.
Jannie froze for a moment.
Then, she buried her face in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably.
"What's the point of living? We’re merely surviving here!"

Before the plane landed
Fiona was groggy, having dozed off for a while.
But in her dreams, she kept hearing Janna calling her name.
She wanted to open her eyes, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't; her dream was enveloped in darkness, and she couldn't see where Janna was.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here," she heard Darwin's voice from afar.
Her panic began to subside slowly.
After a while, as the plane started its descent, Fiona finally woke up from the nightmare.
"Are we there?" she asked hoarsely.
"Here, drink some water. Yeah, we're going to land." Darwin handed her a cup of warm water.
Fiona took the cup and gulped down the entire cup in one go.
Setting down the empty glass, Fiona looked at Darwin and said, "As soon as we land, we go straight to the police."
"Report to the police?" Darwin asked, slightly startled.
"Yes! To the authorities!"
Fiona was determined. "And we need to make it public and get everyone talking about it."
Darwin didn't know what she was planning, but he hesitantly agreed. "I'll handle the media."
"Good."
The plane touched down smoothly at the airport.
The car to pick up Fiona had arrived early.
Without hesitation, she directed it straight to the police station.
About half an hour later, Chelsea filed a missing person report for Janna, and it hit the headlines across major media outlets.
Even outside the police station, she faced the swarming press.
"Ladies and gentlemen, as you all know, my grandmother Janna once publicly cut ties with Ken. Now, my uncle, who was in perfect health, died under mysterious circumstances, and Grandma abruptly went missing, with only Ken claiming she fell ill and became unconscious from grief."
Facing the media, Fiona spoke confidently and unyieldingly.
"Now, Ken refuses to disclose Grandma's condition to me or communicate, denying me any chance to see her. Given the strained relationship between him and my grandmother, I am extremely concerned for her safety and question the truth behind his statements. I have no choice but to seek help from law enforcement and the media."
Fiona looked into the camera and confronted Ken, "Thirty years ago, it was you who, in your quest to elevate your mistress, smeared my mother's name, driving her away from us. That led to my grandmother severing ties with you after she learned the truth. For three decades, you haven't shown a shred of remorse. Your despicable act of kidnapping and hiding our grandmother is beyond forgiveness. You fail not only as a husband and a father but also as a son. If you have any conscience left, don't harm her. Any injury to her will be a war without end."
After Fiona finished, she climbed into her car.
The bodyguards held back the surging press.
Darwin stepped forward.
"Mr. Solomon, what do you have to say about the allegations your wife has made? Do you also believe that Ms. Janna has been kidnapped?" a journalist asked.
"Mr. Solomon, are you rushing here with Miss Rhoads out of concern for Ms. Janna or with ulterior motives to take over the Rhoads family?" another reporter asked.
The reporters were shouting vigorously.
Darwin glanced at the crowd, and all at once, silence fell like a curtain.
"I have no opinion on what my wife said. We stand united," Darwin replied, locking eyes with a particular journalist. "And as for your insinuations about the Rhoads family, the Solomons aren't ambitious enough to swallow them whole."
"Mr. Solomon, regarding the internet rumors suggesting Miss Rhoads isn't Janna's biological granddaughter, what's your stance?"
"The shareholder meeting of the Rhoads family will clarify everything," Darwin paused. "Furthermore, for those who have slandered my wife, let it be known that I've taken note. Besides seeking legal recourse, the Solomon and Rhoads family will henceforth refuse to collaborate in any capacity with the involved individuals or companies."
Having said his piece, Darwin left the media swarm and returned to his car.
In the live broadcast that followed, all that was left was the image of Darwin and Fiona's car speeding away.
"Boom!"
A sharp, explosive sound.
The TV burst into pieces.
"Has she lost her mind?" Alice said, pointing at the broken television, her earlier demureness replaced by hysteria. "The reputation of the consortium affects our share prices. How could she spout such nonsense in front of the media?!"
Alice, a woman who had ascended through questionable means, was not widely known. The prevailing story had been that it was Jane who had cheated first, leaving Ken heartbroken and leading to their divorce. It wasn't until a few years later that Ken remarried Alice.
Alice was skilled at crafting her public image and always had a decent reputation.
Who could have known?
Decades of careful image-building was destroyed by this fiery outburst in front of the media. They had undone it all with a single phrase: mistress ascension.
"I'm calling the press to deny these claims right away!" Alice said, frantic to make the call.
Ken pressed down her hand. "Honey, what if she has evidence? You know how that witch operates. She wouldn't make a move without full preparation!"
"Evidence?" Alice turned deathly pale.
Previously, the old hag had confronted her, claiming she had found the evidence framing Jane.
Ken didn't believe it.
Enraged, the old hag had thrown him out.
And yet, no evidence was revealed.
Alice had always suspected that the old hag was bluffing. There couldn't be any objective evidence.
Her gaze fell upon the shattered television.
Bitterness bled in her heart.
With the scandal escalating like this, if that old hag handed over the evidence to that little snake, Chelsea...
She had to counter.
She would vehemently deny the release of any evidence.
In the end, it would all come back to bite her!
Lately, Alice had been on a winning streak, with everything going her way.
But being suddenly choked like this made her want to lash out violently.
