Chapter 389 Seems Easy to Handle?
Thalassa rushed, her car's engine roaring to life as she sped towards the airport.
She had planned to be home an hour ago.
But on her way back, she hit a massive pile-up on the highway that delayed her for over an hour.
Just as she merged onto the expressway leading to the airport, her phone rang; it was Kenny.
"Mrs. Walker..."
"Kenny, I'm on my way to the airport now. Can you wait for me, please?" Thalassa's voice was on the verge of tears. "There was a huge traffic jam coming from the construction site."
"You're heading to the airport?" Kenny sounded surprised. "Aren't you home in Chicago?"
"Yeah, I grabbed my car keys!" Thalassa replied hastily. "Anyway, just wait for me!"
"Mrs. Walker, I'm already at home," Kenny sighed with frustration and resignation.
Thalassa was flustered. "Wasn't your flight supposed to land at eight?"
"It came in early." Kenny, half amused, half sympathetic, urged her, "Head back home."
Thalassa fell silent momentarily, swiftly rerouted, and looked for the nearest exit to start her way back.
"Don't worry, I'll wait at the neighborhood entrance." Kenny, sensing Thalassa's irritation, coaxed her over the phone. "I know you had a tiring day running to the construction site, so I thought I'd come home early to surprise you. Save yourself the hassle of another airport run, alright?"
Thalassa huffed, "Well, I'm already making the run..."
"My bad!" Kenny was quick to admit fault. "How about this—I'll take you out for your favorite barbecue downtown tonight?"
"Deal!" Thalassa was placated instantly.
After hanging up, Kenny glanced over at Doodle, their chubby cat.
"Have you put on weight?" Kenny bent down, scooped up Doodle by the armpits to weigh him, and chuckled, "Looks like our little caretaker has been taking their job very seriously."
Doodle wore a disgruntled expression and voiced a displeased meow.
"Not happy?" Kenny teased, "Fine, I won't play with you. I have to go pick up my wife!"
Kenny set down Doodle, slipped into his shoes, and walked out the front door with a spring in his step.
In the past, Kenny never had much sense of time—days just passed as they were.
But returning from college this time, he truly felt the weight of each day and understood what it meant to yearn for home.
Jasmine bloomed beautifully in the neighborhood's public garden on this early summer evening.
Kenny used to dislike their strong fragrance.
But tonight, the scent seemed rather pleasant.
After about ten minutes, Kenny reached the main gate.
He estimated that Thalassa would take some time to drive back.
And just then...
"Kenny?"
Kenny turned at the sound of the familiar voice.
Today, Aurora was the epitome of professionalism, her attire crisp and her makeup exact, a surprised smile gracing her features. "Aren't you supposed to be back at school? The other day, I saw a group photo your classmate shared on social media with you in it."
"Yeah, I wrapped things up and came back," Kenny replied, signaling an end to the conversation with his short response.
But Aurora had waited too long for this chance encounter.
She wasn't about to let the opportunity to talk to Kenny, who was finally alone, slip away. "What a coincidence; I was planning to contact you."
"Oh? What for?" Kenny inquired.
"Well, the company I'm about to start working for is heading in the same direction you studied. So I would like to hear your thoughts," Aurora said casually.
"Sorry, as you know, I just got married. There's a lot on my plate right now, so I don't have the time," Kenny turned her down without hesitation.
This took Aurora by surprise.
Sure, Kenny was known to be somewhat aloof, but he was always willing to help with academic issues or, at the very least, refer someone else who could.
After a brief moment of awkwardness, Aurora managed to smile. "Playing the role of the devoted husband now, huh? By the way, why are you here by yourself? Waiting for someone?"
"Yeah, waiting for my wife," Kenny said.
Aurora was at a loss for words.
"Ah? She didn't pick you up from the airport?" she feigned surprise as if it were a matter of great significance.
Just then, a car turned the corner and approached the gate.
Kenny's expression shifted instantly from detached indifference to uncontained joy as the vehicle passed through the gate and pulled over to the curb.
Thalassa leaped from the driver's seat. "Kenny!"
Her voice was full of joy as she ran toward him.
Human emotions can be peculiar.
When they first got married, Thalassa had been worried she might not feel that spark of romance with Kenny. But how long had it been? She had missed him terribly during their time apart.
Now that he was finally back, Thalassa wanted to wrap him in a big hug.
"Easy there!" Kenny opened his arms, steadying himself to catch her, and pulled her close.
Thalassa's headlights were still on, perfectly casting a shadow over Aurora, who now stood in the blind spot, her blood freezing as she witnessed the scene before her.
This woman...
She thought to herself, “This must be on purpose.”
Thalassa embraced Kenny for a while, then sensed a gaze from behind. She let go and turned around, her radiant smile fading slightly when she saw Aurora. "Aurora?"
Thalassa remembered her.
Aurora greeted her with a smile. "Hey there! We meet again. Please don't get the wrong idea; Kenny and I bumped into each other. We had some academic stuff to hash out, and we talked a bit more," she said.
Thalassa was speechless.
Aurora appeared so sweet all of a sudden.
"What are you talking about? What could I possibly misunderstand?" she said, looping an arm around Kenny's waist and looking up at him with a beaming smile. "Kenny's a one-woman guy, which puts my mind at ease."
Aurora's face tensed up instantly.
Kenny lowered his gaze, a gentle smile spreading across his face as he looked at the smug Thalassa. "Let's not head home. How about we go to the old town and grab some of your favorite BBQ?"
"Sure, you're driving!"
"Okay."
Kenny walked over to the driver's side.
Thalassa waved cheerily at Aurora. "I'm starving. You'll have to find another day to discuss academics with Kenny."
After Thalassa got into the car, Kenny made a swift U-turn and sped off, leaving Aurora staring at the vanishing taillights in the evening glow. She clenched her fists so tight that she was nearly drawing blood.
Inside the car
"I don't have her contact info; she can't discuss anything academic with me," Kenny said.
"What?" Thalassa feigned surprise. "Pull over and hand me your phone. I'll add her to your WhatsApp!"
