Chapter 1412

Darwin stared at the black mist.

The first time he saw this mist, it wasn't black.

Darwin gazed at the mist for a long time. "So, you came outta this thing, huh?"

The mist twisted and turned, and when it finally dispersed, there stood the other Darwin.

He looked utterly disheveled, drenched, and emaciated.

"Your state depends on whether I fear you," Darwin continued.

"State?" The man glanced at himself and then laughed maniacally. "You think I look like this 'cause you're not scared of me anymore? Darwin, how can you be so dumb? I look like this 'cause I'm slowly merging with you. The parts of me that disappear are integrating into your body."

"Is that so?" Darwin sneered.

The mist began to close in on the other Darwin, as if trying to engulf him.

"Get away!" He snarled, waving his hand in disgust.

Then he glared at Darwin with venomous eyes. "Darwin, soon we will become one. No psychologist, no matter how skilled, will be able to detect my presence. Hubert will sign the discharge papers just like Aldrich did, and Darwin, I will seize the opportunity, just like Aiden killed Marisole, to tear Fiona apart!"

After saying this, he seemed to think of something, and looked at Darwin with malicious glee. "I'll do it right in front of your kids. Your daughter is quite the artist; I'll have her paint the scene of her mother's gruesome death with her mother's blood. Hahaha, isn't that delightful?"

His words were horrifying.

Darwin's heart surged with anger and fear, causing his emotions to fluctuate.

Fear nourished the other Darwin, and the mist around him silently dispersed, his sunken eyes becoming more prominent.

He was born from Darwin's instincts.

He knew exactly what Darwin feared.

While investigating Aiden, Darwin had seen Marisole's autopsy report. Those images were deeply buried in his mind.

After his illness, he had recurring nightmares where Marisole's image morphed into Fiona's.

His deepest fear was that he would, in a fit of madness, kill Fiona just like Aiden did.

The other Darwin smirked triumphantly.

"If you want to prevent this from happening, do you know what you need to do?" He approached Darwin, emitting a musty, moldy smell.

Darwin remembered the smell from the attic where he found Aiden's diary.

"Die." The malicious voice whispered in Darwin's ear, tempting him.

"If you die, your wife will be completely safe. So now you choose: let me lie dormant until I kill Fiona in front of your kids, or you die and end it all."

"Are those the only options?" Darwin asked, looking at him.

The grotesque face froze in a smile, then turned angry. "Yes, either you die, or she dies!"

Darwin shook his head. "I choose the third option."

"The third option?" The other Darwin frowned.

The mist began to close in again, unnoticed by him.

"You die." Darwin leaned in, his voice cold, and then pushed him hard. The man looked at Darwin in panic as his body fell into the mist.

The mist enveloped him tightly before he could escape.

He struggled desperately within the mist.

Darwin sat there, his face cold, no longer showing the gentle demeanor he had after his amnesia.

"I was truly foolish," Darwin said, watching the struggling figure in the mist. "How could you be a part of me? I should know for certain that every part of me, from body to soul, loves Fiona deeply. Letting her die could never be a choice I would make."
