Chapter 578 She Was Pregnant With Darwin's Child

Ever since Fiona recognized that Charles was a child with strong independent thinking,

She stopped interfering with his life and learning methods.
Charles was the kind of kid who could identify problems and regulate himself.

Excessive interference from Fiona might actually impede the development of Charles’s thinking.

Take the current situation for example.

Fiona knew that Charles needed to spend more time playing with friends.

Charles also needed to overcome his dislike of noise.

After all, he had just started school, and there would be plenty of noisy places in his future.

Yet Fiona still chose to let Charles slowly integrate and adjust on his own.

This process was much more important than her imposing demands.

After a brief exchange, Charles returned.

Fiona was pleasantly surprised that his little friends didn’t pressure Charles too much.

"Let's go."

Charles opened the car door and expertly settled into his booster seat.

Fiona and Darwin exchanged a knowing look and smiled as they got into the car.

In the car, Fiona asked Charles about the difficulty of the competition.

"It was easy," Charles replied. "Honestly, sign me up for something harder next time."
"Awesome!" Fiona gave him a thumbs-up.

Charles fell silent again.

Focused on his iPad, he seemed busy with something.

"These days are really good," Fiona said, drawing her gaze from Charles to the road ahead.

In late autumn, the roadside leaves were a golden yellow.

They were as beautiful as an oil painting.

Darwin glanced at her, love brimming in his eyes.

He felt regret as well.

He could have had these good days much earlier but he missed out on so many years.

However, Fiona was right; they had to look forward, making the most of the days to come!

When they returned to Emerald Pool, it was already late.

Charles was visibly tired from the day and had fallen asleep in the car.

When Darwin lifted Charles out of the car, Fiona still felt a bit anxious. She touched his forehead and then felt his little hands, worried that Charles might be feeling uncomfortable due to exhaustion.

Today, it was Jannas's turn to pick up Chicago from school. Chicago didn't seem to mind at all that her dad, who usually picked her up every day, suddenly had to go see his brother and didn't spare it a second thought.

Once they got home, Chicago immediately dove into her research about the greenhouse with Stuart.

"Why so late? Chicago fell asleep waiting," Jannas said in a soft voice as she greeted them.

"Charles's exams didn't finish until after five," Fiona replied. "Darwin, take Charles to his room, then come down for dinner."

"Shouldn't we wake Charles up?" asked Darwin.

"No, let him sleep."

"Okay."

Darwin carried Charles upstairs.

Fiona watched them for a moment before turning to see Jannas smiling. "What's up?"

"Nothing, just feeling glad seeing you two getting along so well," Jannas said sincerely. "Seeing you happy makes me let go of the past issues."

Fiona smiled too.

"Come on, finish eating early so you can rest," Jannas said, patting Fiona's back before yawning and heading to her room.

A while later, Darwin came downstairs.

"Where's Grandma?"

"She stayed up waiting for us, so of course she went to sleep once we got back," Fiona explained, stretching her stiff neck.
Darwin came over and began to massage her neck. "I'll give you a proper massage before bed."

She looked up at him and then wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his neck.

"What's wrong?" Darwin asked in a soft voice as he rubbed her back.

"Grandma and Thalassa—they're so relieved that we're getting along again," Fiona said with a light sigh. "Darwin, what were we even putting ourselves through before?"

"It was my fault," Darwin admitted without hesitation. "I should have done better."

"Really?" Fiona looked up at him and kissed his lips. "Let's go have dinner."

"Let me have a little taste of something else first..." Darwin trailed off.

Then, he tightened his hold around Fiona's waist and kissed her deeply.

Two days before Darwin's birthday, a serious incident occurred at the branch company in the island nation. As the president, Darwin had to fly over immediately.

On his way out, he promised Chicago that he would definitely be back on his birthday.

Upon his arrival at the destination, Darwin jumped straight into work.

Grasping every moment, they urgently addressed everything that needed attention.

The night before his birthday, as the clock inched toward the midnight hour, Darwin's trip back to Bay City was unexpectedly delayed.

A sudden and powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake had shaken the city where Darwin resided.

Thankfully, Darwin was unharmed.

However, his flight back had been grounded due to the seismic event, and it was impossible for it to take off.

Fiona was understandably frightened upon learning the earthquake news.

However, Darwin immediately called to reassure her of his safety.

“If I can't make it back in time, we can celebrate later. There's no need to worry. I'll explain everything to Chicago,” Fiona consoled Darwin. “Chicago will understand that safety comes first over a birthday celebration.”

“Right,” Darwin replied with a single word.

He didn't want Fiona to worry about him.

After ending the call, Darwin continued to search for a solution to return home.

It was, however, to no avail.

The earthquake was quickly followed by severe thunderstorms, further delaying any chance of flight.

At dawn, Chicago got out of bed and, without even putting on shoes, dashed off to look for her father.

“Baby, there was an earthquake where Dad is, and it's pretty bad,” Fiona said, gathering Chicago into her arms to explain seriously.

“An earthquake?” Chicago asked, panic streaked across her face.

Last year, Chicago had learned about earthquakes and had even donated money to children in stricken regions.

“Dad is okay,” Fiona quickly assured her. “But because of the earthquake, his plane can't take off, so he can't come back to celebrate his birthday with us today.”

Chicago processed this information for a moment.

There was evident disappointment, but she still nodded and said obediently, “As long as Dad's okay, that's what matters. We can celebrate his birthday next year.”

“You're such a good girl.” Fiona kissed Chicago on the forehead and added, “But the gift you've prepared for Dad, you'll give it to him when he gets back, don't wait until next year, or he might feel even sadder.”

“He's sad because he can't come back?” Chicago asked.

Fiona nodded. “He nearly cried.”

Chicago shrugged. “He always cries easily.”

Fiona struggled not to laugh. Imagine what people would think if they knew that Darwin was quick to tears.

“Later, why don't you give Daddy a call and wish him a happy birthday,” Fiona said as she straightened Chicago's hair.

Ever since Stuart had come back, it had been a long time since Fiona had seen Chicago's hair in such disarray.

“Okay.” Chicago nodded.

Fiona let her go back to her room to get dressed and do her hair.

Fiona was just about to ask Darwin how things were on his side when her Facebook page blew up with activity and both her personal and work phones began to ring at the same time. She frowned slightly and reached for her personal phone first.

Fiona frowned slightly and picked up the phone.

Before she could speak, she heard Thalassa's voice, deep with concern, “Has Darwin returned yet?”

"The earthquake has cancelled all flights. What's going on?” she replied.

“Lilian claims she's pregnant with Darwin's child, around four or five months now!" "
