Chapter 240 Ex-Fiancé Drama
"Amusing, isn't it?" Fiona eyed Darwin with a look that dripped exasperation.
"So, you think a few more kisses will change something?"
"If it won't change anything, why not enjoy a few more?" With that, Darwin brazenly wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her deeply.
Fiona was speechless.
Well, it was clear what had changed about Darwin. His thick skin—now seemingly impervious to any sense of shame.
After showering her with kisses, Darwin clung to Fiona. "Baby, I really have changed... Give me another shot, just one more chance, please?"
His plea was heartfelt.
Fiona couldn't help but sigh. "Darwin, what were you planning to do if I hadn't shown up at the funeral yesterday?" she didn't answer his question, instead changing the subject.
"Who can say?" Darwin's lips grazed her earlobe as he spoke softly. "What matters is you were there, and that was the best outcome."
"Stop it!" Fiona pushed at Darwin.
But he clung tighter. "You haven't given me an answer yet."
"I won't," Fiona asserted, her frustration evident. "What's there to try? If I'm not satisfied, will you let go?"
"If you're not satisfied, I'll keep changing until you are."
Fiona paused, then concluded, "So, you're just not willing to let me go?"
"We're going to work things out," Darwin stated with unyielding certainty.
"Are we?" Fiona's eyelids drooped. "Do you want to keep your fingers?"
Darwin loitered for a moment more before settling down obediently, allowing Fiona to tend to his wounds.
Truth is, this wasn't the first time Fiona had tended to his wounds.
In days past, his Fiona truly cherished him and held him close to her heart. She would rush to his side over the smallest scrape, eager to make him feel better.
Now, as he considered how things had changed, Darwin was filled with regret. If it hadn't been for that arranged marriage, she wouldn't have left, and they wouldn't have faced all the ensuing troubles.
After wrapping Darwin's finger neatly, Fiona meticulously cleaned and returned the supplies to the medicine kit. Lifting her gaze, her clear eyes met his without a trace of excess emotion. "I'll consider what you've said seriously," Fiona stated. "But you have to promise me, before we get back together, there'll be no link between Chelsea and Darwin in public eye."
"Deal!" Darwin blurted out, relieved at her concession, but quickly added with a hint of unease, "You're really going to think it over?"
"Yeah," Fiona nodded, getting ready to leave. "I've got things to do. Remember to get your shot when you have a moment."
Darwin didn't want her to leave so suddenly. "Have you had lunch?" He stood up, grasping her hand and looking up at her. She had arrived in such a hurry; it was around lunchtime and she must be hungry. "Don't skip lunch. Let’s go out to eat something."
Fiona was indeed hungry and without much hesitation, she agreed.
At the restaurant, Darwin sat across from Fiona, watching her eat gracefully. Pouring her a cup of peach tea, he said, "Tomorrow, my grandma's lawyer will read her will. You should be there."
"Why should I go?" Fiona asked, taking a sip of the fragrant brew.
"There's a part in it for you," Darwin replied, a hint of confusion in his voice. He had never understood why his stern grandmother, seemingly cold to everyone, had such a fondness for Fiona.
Perhaps now he got it. His wife had a magic about her, an inexplicable charm that drew people to her.
Fiona's fingers stiffened slightly as she lowered her eyes. "But legally, Fiona is dead," she said coolly. "I'd rather not cause any unnecessary complications."
"It's about the jewelry she collected over the years," Darwin said softly.
At a Solomon family elder's birthday banquet, remembered Fiona, she overheard Anniston chatting with some socialites.
At a high-society gathering, a lady of distinction mentioned the matriarch's jewel collection, "With all those jewels your mother-in-law has, I'm guessing they'll be yours in a hundred years, right? You must have us over then to marvel at them!"
Anniston replied with feigned indifference, "She's already made it clear those are going to Darwin's wife."
"Her daughter-in-law? Isn't she playing favorites?" someone sniped.
Clearly irked, Anniston still put on an air of nonchalance: "I'm not exactly short on jewelry. If I like something, I just buy it. If she wants my daughter-in-law to have them, that's fine by me."
The memory took her back to the dining room.
"You keep it for now," said Fiona, setting down her tea cup after a final sip. "I'm full; I'm off."
Darwin walked Fiona to the parking lot, the ancient trees rustling as they always did.
"Drive safely," Darwin urged.
"Mhm," Fiona acknowledged, settling into her car. She rolled down the window before leaving and gave Darwin one last warning, "Don't pull any more stunts, you won't get another chance!"
"Sure thing!" Darwin agreed immediately.
Fiona couldn't help but ease up on her anger. Where on earth had he learned this tactic of feigning innocence?
Somehow, it seemed oddly familiar.
With these thoughts, Fiona drove off the mountain and back to her studio.
Online, the chatter about Darwin's new bride was as heated as ever.
At the studio, the team was also buzzing with gossip.
Upon Fiona's return, the clustered group quickly dispersed.
Fiona strode towards her office but paused at the door, then turned back: "Darwin was my former fiancé, and the recently deceased Mrs. Solomon was very kind to me. I respected her greatly and attended yesterday in her honor. That's all there is to it. There's no need for wild guesses. The RH Company presentation is the day after tomorrow. Are we ready?"
"I'm just about finished here!" someone responded.
"Nearly done on my end as well!"
"Good. Let's reconvene in the conference room at four."
With that, Fiona briskly walked into her office.
Outside, a brief silence fell for a few seconds before the team erupted into a silent tirade of expressive curses in their native tongue.
"Fiancé!!!"
"I thought at most he was an ex!!!"
"Now I see where all that animosity towards Chelsea from Miss Robbins comes from!"
"Damn! Miss Robbins is the current one, right? That's not okay. Chelsea can't lose to an ex's present partner. Let's get moving! We have to nail that RH Company deal!"
