Chapter 21
Anniston didn't even realize what happened and was still smiling. On the other hand, Hathaway held a booklet to show it to Darwin.
Unexpectedly...
"Men won’t be that serious if it’s about work!" Anniston was the first to react, trying to suppress her anger while remaining nice to Hathaway.
Anniston knew her son. He wouldn't react like that, no matter how serious the work was.
"Mrs. Anniston." Hathaway looked at Anniston. "About the Fiona you mentioned, is her full name Fiona Woods?"
Anniston was surprised for a moment. “Ah… yes. She is Darwin's secretary."
Hathaway nodded. She saw him from afar when he went to the airport to pick her up the other day. Among the crowd, he stood tall and handsome, and was extremely eye-catching.
However, he seemed absent-minded, constantly looking at his phone. He didn't even notice her until she reached him.
As they were leaving the airport, he made up an excuse of having a company matter to attend to and took her to the office.
Hathaway didn't think much of it at the time. She was even happy that Darwin would take her to the company and introduce her to everyone.
However, he received a phone call as soon as they arrived at the company. He didn't even have time to say anything to her and hurriedly went to the sales department's floor.
Shortly after, she witnessed him acting extremely agitated, rushing toward an injured woman.
There was a lot of commotion around, with cops at the scene.
She heard him calling out someone named Fiona in a trembling voice.
“Ms. Ross, don't think too much about it,” Anniston noticed Hathaway's expression was off, and quickly explained, “Darwin doesn't care about Fiona at all. Compared to you, she's not even worth one percent of his time and effort. After getting engaged to you, he fired her."
Hathaway snapped back to reality. She smiled gracefully and said, "Mrs. Anniston, I know that. Even if she's still around, I don't think she can take Darwin away from me."
Despite her gentle words, Anniston felt an intense possessiveness coming from Hathaway. She immediately felt relieved and overjoyed because she always thought Hathaway and Darwin were together just for the sake of the business alliance. But now, it seems Hathaway has feelings for her son as things would be much easier this way.
"Don't worry!" Anniston patted Hathaway's hand and said, "I will never let anyone bully you."
Hathaway nodded and then hugged Anniston. With Darwin absent, both of them lost interest in the matter at hand.
Hathaway left quickly. Anniston immediately called Darwin, and he answered promptly.
"What is it?" Darwin's icy and harsh voice did not sound like the tone a son would use when speaking to his mother.
Anniston suppressed her anger and asked, "Darwin, where are you?"
"I’ve got something important to do.”
"Are you going to see Fiona?" Anniston sneered. "I've always said that this woman is not simple. She pretends to be Lilian and stays by your side, pleasing your grandma in every possible way. Now that you're about to get married, she finally reveals her true colors!"
"Mom, what are you talking about?" Darwin asked impatiently.
In fact, Anniston had criticized Fiona in front of Darwin before but he didn't pay much attention to it.
But today, he was inexplicably irritated.
"Don't you understand what I'm saying? She clearly knew today that you were busy with your engagement, so she deliberately deceived you in front of Hathaway!"
Darwin finally understood what Anniston meant. He sneered, "Do you think Fiona is holding onto me?"
"Is she not?" Anniston raised her voice.
Darwin gritted his teeth. Perhaps everyone in the world who knew about his relationship with Fiona would think the same. How could she think about leaving him? Knowing that he was about to get married, of course, she would do everything in her power to snatch him back and keep him.
Anniston was also right. Knowing that he was going to get married, Fiona had indeed revealed her true colors. She changed her strategy.
She was no longer loving him, no longer pleasing him, and no longer accommodating to him. She despised him and would reject anything he wanted to do for her. Using the vacation he granted her, she ran off to travel with another man.
"Mom, your son is not that valuable in others' eyes," Darwin said with self-deprecation.
Anniston furrowed her brows, feeling that something was not right with her son.
"I don't care how she has influenced you, Darwin. The alliance between the Ross family and the Solomon family is of great importance. Anyone who dares to ruin it will suffer!"
Darwin slammed on the brakes, and the car made a piercing sound on the road. Fortunately, there were no cars behind, or an accident would’ve occurred.
On the other end of the phone, Anniston heard the sound of the sudden braking and became anxious, "Darwin! What happened?"
"Don't you dare do anything to Fiona!" Darwin said each word forcefully. His tone was incredibly menacing, and he had never spoken to Anniston like this before as his mother had always been dominant. Before Darwin grew up, the family was ruled by Anniston.
Although the relationship between mother and son had always been distant, they had always maintained a superficial peace on the surface.
"Then cut ties with her!" Anniston's voice trembled. She hung up immediately then made another phone call.
"Find someone to keep an eye on Fiona for me! If necessary, I want her to disappear!"
Fiona arrived at the hotel and after she settled down, she informed Wyatt that she had reached New Port. Shortly after, Wyatt called, "Are you with Johnson and his team now?"
"No, I made up an excuse and didn't interact with them too much."
"Smart move!" Wyatt visibly breathed a sigh of relief. "I just found out something. The people Johnson works for is a local big shot, and they are as ruthless as they come."
Fiona instinctively frowned.
"You stay in the hotel, and I'll be there around four in the evening later."
"But didn't you say you had something to attend to?"
"I canceled it." Wyatt's end grew noisy. "You, a young lady, can't handle those people. Just stay safe in the hotel and wait for me."
The call ended, leaving Fiona puzzled. Wyatt was usually carefree, but now he suddenly became serious, which made her feel he had become an unfamiliar person to her. Then she looked at her laptop. Actually, she had just found out about the local big shot Wyatt mentioned. His name was Mack.
Mack was in his early fifties and had caused a lot of trouble locally in his early years, accumulating considerable wealth and connections as a result. With enough money, he turned legit and became a local entrepreneur. During his peak, he owned over half of New Port's entertainment industry.
As she was lost in her thoughts, the doorbell rang. Fiona walked over and saw Harold through the peephole and quickly opened the door.
"Mr. Harold, it's not lunchtime yet." Her playful tone when addressing him as Mr. Harold had a hint of teasing to it.
Harold was quite pleased, his eyes becoming the shape of a crescent moon as he laughed.
