Chapter 657 Public Opinion Warfare
After Henry heard the instructions, he was momentarily shocked. He looked at Darwin, realizing that making this matter public would cause significant public outrage against Solomon. Darwin then glanced at Fiona before agreeing, "Let's do as she says."
Henry promptly complied. As the evening approached, local Bay City media and various online official outlets released news of the two brutal mass murders, revealing the appearance of the killers.
In mere minutes, the mass murder case became the top trending topic, sparking nationwide discussions on platforms like TikTok.
[Did I see that right? 27 dead? They spared no one, men, women, young, and old, all frozen to death? Is this horrifying story really true?]
[Oh my God, it's so terrifying. I'm too scared to even go out at night!]
[This 27-murder case happened near my home. My parents mentioned it before. It took a long time to transport the bodies, and I heard the flesh of the deceased was frozen to the walls and floor. It's truly gruesome!]
[Just the 8 murders were shocking enough for me for the whole year, but this case of 27. These two people are monsters! They should be caught and given the death penalty!]
[Are these two individuals seeking revenge, or were they hired to commit murder?]
[These two individuals have quite distinctive features. They don't seem like typical Americans. Could they be from another country?]
The shocking nature of the case quickly drew attention from overseas media, with several leading outlets rushing to report on it. Their coverage was more detailed than that of domestic media, sparking widespread public outcry.
In the Emerald Pool, Ethan finished his classes in Chicago and glanced outside. It was already dark, with the irritating rain starting up again. Ethan disliked rainy days immensely. Each time it rained in the old streets, a damp, musty smell, hidden for decades, would emerge, making everything appear moist and dirty.
"Take your time with these questions, I'm heading out," Ethan said as he picked up his backpack and made his way to the door. Just as he reached it, he bumped into Fiona, who was carrying fruits.
"Ethan, I need to talk to you about something," Fiona said, getting straight to the point.
Ethan raised his eyebrows slightly and nodded.
A moment later, they were seated Fiona's living room.
"Ethan, something terrible has happened in our family," she explained.
Ethan furrowed his brow. "What happened?"
"Take a look at this," Fiona said, acknowledging Ethan's mental maturity beyond his years by treating him seriously.
Handing Ethan the news articles about the two massacre cases, Fiona watched his reaction closely.
Ethan glanced at them, his brow furrowing even more. "Did you guys do this?"
Fiona was taken aback, shaking her head helplessly. "Of course not, little Ethan. Is that how you see me?"
Whenever Fiona called him "little Ethan," he would blush immediately.
"It's not you, it's your husband," Ethan mumbled.
Having come across plenty of gruesome stories about Chicago's father online, Ethan's suspicions were justified.
Fiona felt a pang of helplessness. Darwin's reputation had spread even among children.
"They are employees of Chicago's father's company," Ethan murmured.
Fiona continued, "These two assassins and the people behind them, their ultimate targets are me and Chicago's father."
Ethan's looked sullen. "What do you want me to do?"
"Silly child, you're still so young, there's not much I'd ask of you. It's just that times have been rather unusual lately. After discussing with Chicago's father, we've decided to minimize the number of people coming and going from Emerald Pool each day," Fiona said gently.
Ethan cast his gaze downwards. "I understand. I just won't come anymore."
"Of course, you can't do that. You're such an excellent teacher; Chicago's chances of ranking in the top one hundred next semester depends on you!" Fiona quickly interjected. "What I mean is, I hope you'll stay. It's also for your safety. If you commute every day, what if someone tampers with your car?"
Ethan furrowed his brows, considering the implications. Besides the possibility of someone tampering with his car, there was the risk of the killer blending in with his daily routine.
"I'll need to go back to get my change of clothes," Ethan said, a note of helplessness in his voice, his eyelids drooping.
"Ethan, you're wonderful. Thank you!"
"It's nothing. I need my tutoring fee."
Growing up was tough, and attending the best school was even tougher. Ethan's bank account was simply insufficient, so he needed to earn money quickly.
Fiona had Mike accompany Ethan to retrieve his clothes, then informed Chicago that Ethan had decided to stay. Chicago was thrilled and immediately had the servant refresh the bedding in Ethan's room.
Fiona allowed Chicago to take charge of the arrangements and sat alone in the living room.
After a while, there was a sudden online revelation that the families killed had individuals working for Darwin. This disclosure stirred up another wave of speculation.
[How mysterious! It wasn't Solomon's employees, but Darwin's?]
[Damn, did Darwin upset someone, leading to his subordinates' unfortunate demise?]
[Could these two individuals have betrayed Darwin or something similar, leading to their annihilation?]
[Are you even thinking? Did you not notice which faction the media that first reported on the massacre today belongs to? Darwin has lost his mind, using his media to expose himself.]
[Yeah, the first media outlet to break the news about the massacre used to be under Solomons' control and is now owned by Darwin! There's no way Darwin wouldn't be aware of such a major report, and he surely knew that the victims were his employees!]
[I get it now. Mr. Solomon must have snapped and used his media to unveil the murderers' identities. There's no way out for these two.]
[If that's the case, then Mr. Solomon still has some integrity. If he covered up his subordinates' massacre to protect family honor and reputation, then he truly wasn't a good person!]
[To be honest, I don't care about the victims' affiliations. I'm only concerned about when those two killers will be apprehended and face justice!]
[Exactly! Do Darwin's employees deserve to be slaughtered?]
[But what if they aided Darwin in committing some atrocious act, and now they're facing retaliation?]
[To be honest, the person above seems mentally unstable. Everyone has their debts and responsibilities. If they committed such heinous acts, the killers should target them specifically, not wipe out their entire families, including innocent babies and elders! Do you sympathize with these psychopathic murderers? That's disturbing. If I encountered someone like you in real life, I'd steer clear!]
In the darkness, she ran her slender fingertips across the screen, observing as sharp and impassioned comments flooded the internet. A perpetual chill lingered in her eyes.
