Chapter 262 Unwanted Visitor

"Have we found that damned culprit?" Fiona suddenly snapped upright, her expression turning fierce. "Recently, Darwin's only been attending the vigil at the temple. When that car charged at us, it was clearly aiming for me..."
"Chelsea, we're on it. The vehicle in question has been flagged as stolen. As for the individual, we've secured surveillance footage from the airport and have a fix on his appearance. We're still working on identifying him, but...the method used in this assassination—it's got the markings of a dark web hit. A life for a life."

"I don't care what kind of web it is! I need to know who's behind hiring the hitman!" Fiona ground out between clenched teeth.

If something—God forbid—happened to Darwin today.

If he ended up maimed or worse.

She would tear that person limb from limb!

Just then, a clamor of footsteps echoed through the space.

Fiona's gaze shot toward the sound, her brow furrowing in concern.

"Where's Darwin?" Anniston's voice boomed as she spotted Fiona.

"Mrs . Potter, please, try to stay calm!" Lilian, supporting Anniston, had tears streaming down her face; her eyes red and swollen.

"When did you two start running around together?" Fiona asked with a cold, mocking laugh.

It made sense that Lilian would come; her obsession with Darwin wasn't something that could be easily resolved.

But...

For her to bring Anniston was a different story altogether.

Anniston and Darwin had been at odds for the longest time...

The only reason she'd be here was if...

"Miss Rhoads, she's Darwin's mother!" Lilian choked out, "With Darwin in such a serious situation, of course she had to come. But what about you? What did you do to bring this misfortune upon him? Can you even begin to atone for it if something happens to him?"

"How do you know it was me who crossed someone?" Fiona pinpointed with razor-sharp precision.

That was always her way.

The more dire the situation; the more she'd notice the finest details.

"Darwin's never had an incident like this in all these years. If not you, then who else could it be?" Lilian shot back.

Fiona glanced at Anniston with a mocking smile. "Lilian, have you forgotten? There was that car accident when he ended up in a vegetative state. Seems to me that it all happened after Grandma Solomon started shifting her power over to him, right? Afterward, some people didn't hesitate to leave a comatose Darwin behind and marry off into European royalty with great fanfare."

"That accident was just that—an accident!" Anniston retorted, as if stepping on a landmine.

"Really?" Fiona sneered. "Anniston, do you honestly think Darwin knows nothing? Perhaps you should give some thought to why his attitude toward you changed so drastically."

Now, with Darwin's fate hanging in the balance, these two women had the audacity to show up.

Fiona could no longer muster the patience to deal with the likes of them.

Anniston's face was ashen with rage.
Indeed, she had orchestrated that car accident years ago, but the last thing she wanted was her son's death. How could a mother truly wish her own son dead?

Her real intention had been to saddle Darwin with a disability and prevent him from taking over the family business. She never anticipated that a seemingly controlled accident would spiral into a massive pile-up, nearly claiming Darwin's life. They poured endless money into saving him, and for a moment, she was relieved.

But once she learned the truth, she wished she could turn back time, rip out Darwin's oxygen tube, and let him pass away then and there! Without him, the old bat would've been devastated and wouldn't have lasted much longer. Solomon would've been hers for the taking!

"Quit spewing nonsense!" Anniston sneered coldly, "I'm Darwin's mother; his next of kin. I don't welcome you here, so get out!"

Fiona didn't even give her a glance. Her bodyguards, along with Darwin's, all menacing and formidable, took their places beside her.

"What do you think you're doing?" Lilian frowned as her face darkened.

She had never imagined that the hired killers would be so reckless as to endanger innocent lives while targeting Fiona. Now, Fiona was unharmed, but Darwin...

Lilian was seething, itching to take a knife and chop Fiona to pieces right there and then.

"Until Darwin wakes up, nobody is going to make me leave," Fiona declared, articulating every word. "Whatever you're plotting; give up now. You won't succeed."

Anniston's eyes bulged in fury.

Just then, footsteps approached from the elevator.

"Fiona!"

Before she came into sight, Ashton's voice was heard.

Seeing the change wash over Fiona's otherwise icy demeanor, she finally looked up.

Ashton was sprinting toward her.

"Good Lord Almighty!" Ashton's voice trembled as she saw Fiona.

"What are you doing? Go get that checked; get your wounds treated!" Ashton nearly sobbed, "Why is there so much blood? Where are you hurt?"

"It's nothing," Fiona shook her head.

At this moment...

Anniston, in shock, gasped, "Kenny?"

"Hello, Aunt," Kenny nodded slightly.

"You've arrived just in time. Please, you have to help her. This woman has put your brother's life on the line, and now she's brought all these tall and tough men to intimidate your poor aunt!"

Anniston was on the verge of collapsing into tears right there on the floor.

Lilian, however, looked horribly pale...

"Shut your mouth!"

Ashton turned sharply and snarled at Anniston.

"You see! Just look!" Anniston pointed at Ashton, her sense of victimhood growing.
As a result, Kenny didn't pay attention to her charade and walked over to Ashton, gently patting her on the head, "Honey, keep it down; we're in a hospital."

"Honey?" Anniston's jaw nearly hit the floor.

Then, as Anniston watched, Kenny turned to Fiona, "Sis, let Ashton go with you to get your wounds checked out. I'll stay here."

"I'm fine," Fiona shook her head.

How could she leave? How dare she leave?
When Darwin woke up, he would surely be looking for her.

"When he wakes up, he's going to worry seeing you like this," Kenny reassured her softly, "At the very least, make sure you don't have any internal injuries. If bro is okay and something happens to you... that'd be awful."

"Exactly, just listen. What would I do if something happened to you? I—I just got a call from him; he knows what happened..."

Fiona's eyes widened in shock, "How does he know?"

"It's all over social media already. There were a lot of people snapping photos at the scene, and both you and Darwin got caught in the frame..." Ashton held her hand, "Janna is already at the airport, and she's freaked out. Get your wounds treated and do a check-up before she sees you in this state and panics."

"Kenny, please stay here for me. If he comes out before I'm back, just tell him I'll be back soon," Fiona begged Kenny with a choked voice.

"Sure," Kenny nodded.

Fiona stood up, her knees screaming with pain, but she bit back any sound of distress.
