Chapter 189 Mommy, I Want to Leave
Lilian's blood seemed to freeze when she saw Chelsea's name.
So, had Darwin seen her?
This question, heavy like a mountain, came crushing down on her.
Soon, Lilian got her answer.
On the guest list, there were people Lilian knew. She made a call to one of them under the pretext of discussing business, but eventually, she brought up the golden wedding celebration of the White family.
"I was actually planning to attend that day too, but some last-minute work came up, so Darwin went by himself," Lilian told the other person.
Upon hearing this, they chuckled, "Miss Robbins, you missed quite a drama."
Lilian's heart skipped a beat.
The voice on the phone continued, "The White couple has always been very dignified, but at their golden wedding celebration, their own granddaughter, out of jealousy, decided to pick a fight with Miss Rhoads from the Rhoads family, and the party ended in discord."
"Rhoads family? Do you mean Chelsea?" Lilian's other hand clenched into a fist, her nails digging deep into her flesh.
"That's her! And when Miss White's granddaughter was giving her a hard time, it was Mr. Solomon who stepped in to defuse the situation. I even heard..."
Their voice became hesitant.
"You don't have to look over your shoulder when it comes to our relationship," Lilian said softly.
"This is just a rumor, but that White family's granddaughter was sent to the asylum the same night, they say she had a mental breakdown. Some people say... it was Mr. Solomon who had her admitted. Haha... what an absurd rumor!"
An asylum?
Lilian's eyelids drooped, her knuckles turning pale.
"Lilian, do you know about this? Surely Mr. Solomon didn't have her admitted? He did seem very protective of Miss Chelsea that day."
"I've just returned, and I haven't seen him yet," Lilian suppressed her emotions, "But him helping Chelsea doesn't surprise me. Darwin has always looked up to Janna, so naturally, he would take care of Mr. Rhoads' granddaughter."
"I see..." The other person responded.
"Let's have a cup of coffee once I'm done with my current project, and we'll talk in person."
"No problem."
After hanging up, a buzzing filled Lilian's ears.
He had seen Chelsea!
And he even defended her in front of everyone!
And afterwards, he took care of the person who humiliated Chelsea.
Lilian's head was full of these questions.
It had been over five years!
Darwin had not sought anyone out, even though she could have been his wife in just a few months, or at most a year or two.
Why were there suddenly so many people competing with her for his attention?
Lilian slapped the steering wheel several times, fiercely.
Then, she had a sudden thought. She leaned against the steering wheel, the corners of her mouth twitching nervously.
So what if Darwin saw Chelsea?
Just moments ago, upstairs. She recalled a saying she'd heard within her defenses that rang true.
"Why compete with the dead over the living?"
As long as Chelsea also died, Darwin would still come back to her to lick his wounds.
Yes! There was nothing that death couldn't solve!
Lilian gradually calmed down, regaining her usual composed demeanor.
But before that, she had something to do. She had to secure the RH Company contract, beating Chelsea, for Solomon. She would show Darwin that she was better than Chelsea.
That Chelsea was a person who could be trampled underfoot whenever she wished!
Chicago had run away from home and Charles had not let Stuart and the others tell Fiona.
When Chicago returned home, with her head hung low, she apologized to Stuart, then went straight to her studio, locked herself in, and did not speak to Charles the whole time.
She skipped dinner, took a bath when tired of painting, and crawled back into her bed to sleep without even asking for a bedtime story. Wendy had never seen the young lady so sad and sat worriedly on the carpet beside her little bed.
"Who exactly did the young lady go to find?" Stuart asked downstairs, perplexed. He was supposed to accompany Charles to pick her up, but Charles had not allowed it.
Stuart had thought about it all afternoon, feeling that something was amiss. The young lady had run away, Charles had analyzed the situation, and, miraculously, figured out where she had gone!
"She went to an uncle she knows," Charles replied crisply. "Stuart, it's better if you don't think about it too much, if you don't wanna slip up in front of my mother."
Stuart was about to ask if keeping the adults in the dark was really wise when Charles seemed to read his thoughts.
"Not letting them know is to spare them the shock. Uncle Stuart, Grandma Janna's health isn't what it used to be," Charles pressed in on Stuart's soft spot with precision.
Stuart immediately sat up straighter, "I understand, I won't say a word!"
Charles was not worried about Wendy speaking. Threatening her job usually kept her quiet.
At ten o'clock, Fiona's car pulled into the garage. After a moment, she emerged from the elevator, weary. Seeing Charles, she was momentarily stunned, "Charles, why are you still awake?"
"I ate too much at night, felt too full to sleep," Charles responded as if it were nothing, "Mommy, you look very tired."
"The final days are approaching, once the plan is finalized, I'm off on vacation!" Fiona walked over and hugged Charles, her cheek rubbing against him affectionately, "Has Chicago gone to bed?"
"Yeah." Charles continued after a paused, "Mommy, I want to take Chicago back to uncle's place."
"Hmm?" Fiona looked up at Charles, puzzled, "Why?"
"Uncle must be lonely by himself," Charles answered earnestly, "And Chicago also needs to start preparing for the school entrance exams."
Charles's reasons were all very persuasive.
"Don't worry, once I'm done with this project, I'll take you guys out for a trip, and then we can go back and prepare. We'll have plenty of time," Fiona said as she thought Charles was worried about Chicago failing the entrance exam.
"You can come to get us after you're done."
"You want to leave that bad? You don't like it here?" Fiona asked.
Charles was silent for a moment. That wasn't it.
He didn't like Armie Country very much.
"I don't like it," Charles shook his head.
Nothing was more important than Mommy and Chicago. He wouldn't let the bad guys take Chicago nor would he let Mommy be sad.
Hence, they had to leave!
"I understand," Fiona always respected her child's wishes.
Since Charles didn't like it here, she definitely wouldn't force him to stay.
But an unexpected turn of events that no one had anticipated happened the very next morning.
Fiona was having breakfast downstairs when the doorbell rang.
Stuart was mysteriously absent and Wendy had gone to wake the children in their rooms.
Fiona went to open the door and then froze.
"Surprise!" Janna stood at the doorway, a beaming smile on her face as she exclaimed.
"Weren't you saying you had a sudden project and couldn't come because you had to go on a business trip?" Fiona was bewildered.
"How else could I surprise you?" Janna said as she let herself in.
