Chapter 583 Almost Missed

Fiona remembered.

That day was her grandparents' wedding anniversary.

Every year since leaving Serene City, her grandmother would return to Serene City alone, because she missed her grandfather.

Fiona wasn't feeling great.

After school, she skipped her tutoring class and went to a nearby park.

She loved this park because it was so similar to the one near her home in Serene City.

As a child, Fiona would go to the park every day with her grandfather, taking walks and playing chess.

After buying some snacks from a vendor at the park entrance, Fiona walked around and then went to the lakeside.

She found a secluded spot by the lake, sitting on a lounge chair under a large banyan tree, listening to new songs by her favorite singer until it got dark.

When the streetlights came on, Fiona looked at the time, realizing it was late and that her grandmother would be back soon. She quickly grabbed her backpack and was ready to leave, when suddenly she heard a splash.

Following the sound, she saw someone struggling in the lake.

Back then, Fiona was very kindhearted.

Without a moment's hesitation, she dropped her backpack, ran over, and jumped into the lake to save the person.

Fortunately, the person didn't have much strength, and with a bit of effort, she managed to get them to shore.

After getting to the ground, she saw that the person was motionless.

She performed CPR and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

It took a while, but the person finally coughed up water and came back to life.

By then, people nearby who heard the commotion had also gathered around.

Fiona sat exhausted on the ground.

In the dim light, she felt the gaze of the person she had saved looking at her.

"You don't have to thank me; I saw you, I had to save you." Fiona paused for a moment, her thoughts racing to her grandmother, and she quickly patted her forehead and addressed the people around her. "Could someone please call 911 or something? I have an emergency at home and need to leave!"

Ever since her mother and grandfather had passed away, Fiona's grandmother's personality had undergone a significant change. She knew that Fiona was kind-hearted and loved helping others. Therefore, she repeatedly emphasized that while it was fine to lend a hand, Fiona must never put herself in danger.

That very night, Fiona had jumped into the lake to save someone. Her grandmother would undoubtedly be angry if she found out. With this in mind, Fiona hurriedly grabbed her backpack and left the park.

"I got home that day, barely managed to change and toss my clothes in the washing machine when Grandma came back. It was a close call; she almost caught me!" Fiona recounted the entire process of the rescue from her past.

Darwin's face had turned ashen. "Was it you who saved me?" His voice trembled slightly.

"Did you fall into the water that day?" Fiona asked, certain of the date because it was the anniversary of her grandfather's passing. For Darwin, that day was also of profound significance. He couldn't possibly forget it either.

"Let's be sure; let's ask around the park to see if anyone else fell into the water that day," Fiona said with a grave tone.

How could it be such a coincidence that she was the one who had saved Darwin.

"No need to ask!" Darwin gripped Fiona's hand tightly. "I vaguely remember your figure, which is why I mistook Lilian for you! Fiona, didn't you feel a sense of recognition when you first saw me?"

Fiona shook her head honestly. "The person I pulled out was thin, and it was too dark. I was too focused on saving the person's life to really look at his face." The first time she had seen Darwin, he was already dressed in a suit.

"How can this be..." Darwin's breathing became rapid, his brows furrowed tightly. The one he had initially sought was Fiona, yet he had taken such a long and winding detour. And because of that detour, he had put Fiona through so much hardship and nearly missed being with her.

With this realization, Darwin, feeling a surge of retrospective fear, hugged Fiona tightly. Very tightly. "Thank goodness for that car accident; it must have been divine retribution for my blindness and ignorance!"

What was originally just an accident arranged by Anniston turned into a near-fatal incident, eventually resulting in Darwin slipping into a comatose state. All of it seemed to be fated. If the accident hadn't happened, Lilian wouldn't have abandoned Darwin to choose a more promising marriage.

Had the accident not occurred, Darwin might have married Lilian within a couple of years, and that would have meant that he and Fiona would have completely missed each other.

"Stop talking nonsense." Fiona patted Darwin. "Why did you go to such an old park in the first place? That place is not close to the Solomon family's old mansion."

Fiona asked, puzzled.

"Someone asked me to meet there," Darwin said, lowering his eyes. "Before my grandmother's dementia set in, the Solomons and her side of the family were quite close. I had a cousin who I got along with fairly well, and he called a meeting there to discuss something. But when I got there, I didn't find my cousin. Instead, someone sneaked up behind me, covered my mouth and nose with chloroform, and after the drug took effect, pushed me into the lake."

Fiona frowned tightly.

Considering Fiona and the cousin's situation, Darwin seemed quite naïve in his earlier years.

So easily deceived.

"What happened after that? How did you resolve the matter?" Fiona asked.

When she had come into Darwin's life, she had never heard anything about this cousin.

"After I went back, I did not make it public, and I didn't take any trouble to confront my cousin," Darwin responded.

Fiona was just about to say how naive that was when Darwin continued, "However, two years later, I caused his company to go bankrupt. He himself fell into enormous debt and faced creditors' relentless pursuit every day. Did you know? He was foolish enough not to guess it was my doing, even came begging to me for money to bail him out..."

"But why would he want to harm you?" Fiona couldn't understand.

If it had been someone with the Solomon surname, she might have understood it as a dispute over the inheritance rights with Darwin.

For the cousin, having Darwin alive and inheriting from the Solomons would seem advantageous to them.

After hearing Fiona's question, Darwin laughed.

Even now, looking back on the reason, Darwin found it both absurd and laughable.

That day the cousin came to borrow money. When he learned that everything he had suffered was Darwin's doing, he went insane.

"You didn't drown, did you? You survived and came back, didn't you? You said nothing at the time and secretly did all these things; Darwin, that is truly despicable!"

"Why do you think I did that? You think? I've always had better grades, better relationships than you, but just because you have the Solomon name, you were born with everything I ever wanted. I hated that unfairness, so I wanted you dead! There are many who wanted you dead, so why couldn't I?"

"Indeed, jealousy can turn people into monsters," Fiona concluded.

"Actually, that was just one of the reasons. There was another he didn't mention because of the Brixton family," Darwin said with a cold laugh. "The Solomon main house only had me as a child. At that time, Grandma was very fond of that cousin. The Brixtons were hopeful; if I died, they planned to persuade Grandma to make the cousin her heir."

"So, after you started taking control of the Solomon family, you ousted everyone from the Brixton family?"

"Yeah."

Darwin buried his face in the nape of Fiona's neck.

"I don't want to talk about this anymore. Right now, I just want Lilian dead." "
