Chapter 20
After Fiona ended the video call, she sat on the sofa in a daze for a moment.
Normally, Grandma Solomon lived in a nursing home for everyone’s convenienc, and would only go back to their residence if something major happened in the Solomon family.
When Darwin took back the phone, Fiona clearly saw the screen and Ms. Hathaway looking in this direction.
So it wasn’t a business trip? Did they get engaged today? What was Darwin thinking? Why did he make Grandma Solomon video call her in front of Ms. Hathaway? Had he gone crazy? And he was a complete scumbag for not considering the girl’s feelings at all.
She touched her belly. "Your father is really something!"
After cursing, she felt that she shouldn't have said bad things about Darwin in front of the child. Annoyed, Fiona threw the phone aside and went back to her room to sleep. Later that night, the phone on the sofa buzzed.
Darwin sent her a WhatsApp message. "You don't have to move. I will transfer the ownership of the house to you. Also, go and cash out the 20 million check as soon as possible. And I’ll transfer Emerald Pool villa to your name as soon as possible too.”
He sent her the text calmly, but there was no response from the other end. He stood on the balcony and smoked half a pack of cigarettes. He wasn't as angry as he had imagined when he slowly scrolled through the chat history with Fiona.
Before she knew about his engagement, she would send him WhatsApp messages every day, not just about work, but also reminding him of the weather and asked him to take his meals. On the contrary, his replies to her were only few.
Early the next morning. Fiona noticed the texts and replied, “I believed you have provided enough to me before, and I don’t need these new things anymore.”
After replying, she took a taxi to the airport to catch an early flight to New Port. The news she needed to deliver had only been informed to the person in charge there yesterday. Fiona came out pushing her suitcase and noticed the other party had been waiting for a while with someone.
The person in charge was called Johnson.
"Johnson." Fiona greeted politely.
"Oh Ms. Fiona, you’re our honored guest!" Johnson quickly had someone take Fiona's suitcase.
"Why are you alone?"
"Mr. Durham and Mr. Darwin will also come soon. I came first to understand the situation," Fiona said calmly.
Johnson grinned. "Alright! Then let's welcome you properly today!"
As they were talking, they prepared to leave.
“Fiona!” At this moment, someone excitedly shouted Fiona’s name.
That voice...
Fiona turned around and saw a happy Harold running toward her.
"Harold?" Fiona was surprised.
"Are you surprised? You didn’t expect this, did you?” Harold asked with a mischievous smile.
"Totally!" Fiona paused. "Are you here for me?"
"Yes!" Harold nodded. "I arrived on the late-night flight. I've been waiting for you here since sunrise!"
Fiona felt somewhat flustered.
Harold slightly bent over, coming closer to Fiona. "Treat me to a meal!"
Fiona laughed. "For a meal, you really go all out, huh?"
"It also depends on whose treat it is!" Harold looked proud.
"Ms. Fiona, who is this?" Johnson asked.
"My friend." The situation was uunclear, and she didn't want to expose Harold's identity.
"Boyfriend?" Johnson laughed, and the others joined in.
"No," Fiona's attitude turned a bit cold. "The situation is complicated. No need for a welcoming party. I'll go to the company for a meeting at 2 pm."
"How can we skip the welcoming party?" Johnson seemed embarrassed. The so-called welcoming party was just Johnson's way of privately communicating with Fiona before she handled things.
"No rush, let's wait for Mr. Durham to arrive."
In the end, Fiona sent Johnson and the others away. She didn't stay at the hotel they had booked. She instead excused herself to stay at the same hotel as Harold. From the moment they met, Fiona had a bad feeling about Johnson and the others. It was different from when they first met.
After those people left, Harold looked at Fiona. "Those guys don't seem like good people. Where did they come from?"
"Solomon," Fiona sighed.
"Over here, there is an infrastructure project that I am in charge of, and they are the supervisors at the construction site," Fiona explained concisely. "I live at the Marriott on North Road. Where do you live?"
Harold lived far away from that Marriott.
"I also live there!" Harold said earnestly.
"How coincidental?" Fiona was astonished.
"Let's go, hurry up and drop off your luggage, then you can take me out for a meal!"
Harold accidentally brushed against Fiona's left hand hidden in her sleeve, which made her winced in pain.
Harold jumped in surprise. "What happened?"
Fiona pulled up her sleeve.
Startled, Harold's face turned pale, and he instinctively and carefully held Fiona's left hand. "What happened here?"
"It's nothing," Fiona disliked this kind of contact and withdrew her hand.
"I will be extra careful!" Harold solemnly promised.
Fiona found the situation hilarious. Harold pushed her suitcase and protected her while they walked toward the parking lot where he attended to every detail like a true gentleman. The car was prepared in advance.
However, unexpectedly, someone had been taking pictures of them from the start, and they even took the photos from some deliberate angles. For example, it appeared as if they were kissing or embracing, portraying intimate scenes.
One hour later, those photos landed in Bella's hands.
A while later, the photos were sent to Darwin through an anonymous email.
The subject line read, "Darwin, your woman and another man went on a sweet trip to New Port. You have been cuckolded, do you know that?”
When Darwin received the email, he was accompanying Anniston and Hathaway, inspecting wedding banquet venues.
He opened the email and carefully selected photos appeared before his eyes one by one. He sat there, seemingly frozen and thought of the message Fiona had sent him in the morning. He couldn't make sense of it. One or two billion was a huge sum of money that an ordinary person would never earn in their lifetime.
So why didn't she want it?
She used to accept whatever he gave her!
Now, the answer seemed clear.
Did Harold promise her more?
"Darwin, this place looks great!" Anniston held Hathaway's hand and turned to say to Darwin.
But Darwin's face turned pale as if something serious had happened.
"What's wrong? Is there something wrong with the company?" Anniston asked.
Darwin locked his phone and put it away. "It's nothing."
"Are you sure nothing's wrong?" Anniston was somewhat worried.
Darwin shook his head.
Anniston was skeptical but prepared to stay to taste the food, while Darwin sat there, motionless for a long time.
All of a sudden, he stood up. Anniston and Hathaway were startled.
"Mum, Ms. Hathaway, I have a business trip to attend to, so you can make decisions about these matters. I won’t have any objections!" After speaking, Darwin didn't even give the two a chance to respond before he grabbed his car keys and practically ran off.
