Chapter 1382
The criminal had this weird habit of keeping a diary.
Hubert had read a lot of messed-up stuff in his career, but this diary? It was on another level.
As he flipped through Odette's diary, page by page, a creeping fear started to choke him.
By the time he was done, Hubert looked like he'd seen a ghost.
"She must have antisocial personality disorder!" Hubert croaked, then turned to Fiona. "Rose is different; she doesn't have antisocial personality disorder!"
"She might not have that disorder, but if she's making the same choices as her mom, she's just plain evil," Fiona said, her voice steady but her eyes locked on Hubert. "Hubert, I'm willing to work with you to test Rose. This is her chance. If she passes, her future's bright, and I'll make sure she's well-compensated. You don't want what happened to your dad to happen to you, right?"
Hubert looked down, deep in thought.
Fiona didn't push further.
She knew Hubert had already made up his mind.
What was holding him back was the bond he had with Rose.
"So, what's the plan?" Hubert finally asked.
"Nothing too complicated. We just need to spread the word that Darwin can be discharged and get our hands on a box of the new medication," Fiona replied calmly.
Hubert nodded. "Mrs. Solomon, I have a favor to ask."
Fiona cut in, "If she makes the same choice as her mother, as long as it doesn't cause any major harm, I won't hurt her. You have my word."
Hubert let out a sigh of relief.
"I'll get on it right away. About the medication..."
"Just grab something random; no need to waste the good stuff from the lab," Fiona said, standing up.
"Are you going to see him?" Hubert asked, standing up too. "He should be in the activity room around this time."
Fiona shook her head. "When the time's right, we'll meet."
But as she left, Fiona couldn't help but pass by the activity room. A few months later, through a small window, she saw Darwin again.
Darwin didn't look great. He was sitting on a bench, staring at the photo Fiona had left him.
His spine was visible through his pale skin.
Fiona's eyes filled with tears.
At that moment, Darwin, still staring at the photo, turned his head and looked in her direction.
Fiona took a couple of steps back.
From Darwin's view, there was no one there.
But he still put the photo away, stood up, and walked towards the door.
A nurse approached him. "Are you heading back?"
Darwin didn't say a word. The new medication was working, but it had messed with his throat, and he hadn't spoken much in the past couple of weeks.
He opened the door.
Darwin looked towards the window where he had just been.
It was empty.
"Mr. Solomon, it's really cold outside; you should go back in," the nurse gently suggested.
But Darwin walked to the window anyway.
The cold wind blew, and he raised his hand, feeling it pass through his fingers.
In the wind, Darwin caught a scent he had been longing for day and night.
