Chapter 1231
Melissa was drooling and grinning from ear to ear.
Ashton knew Melissa didn't really get what the grown-ups were talking about. But just mentioning a trip to see her grandparents lit her up, and that made Ashton happy too.
"Melissa, you look just like your dad, and you've got his great personality too. That's awesome!" Ashton said, giving Melissa and Kenny a compliment.
Ashton had felt a heavy weight on her chest all morning, but now it was starting to lift a bit.
After packing up Melissa's stuff, Kenny and Ashton left Emerald Pool and headed to Solace Hills Cemetery.
Meanwhile, once they left the city, the beautiful scenery lifted Fiona's spirits and put everyone in a better mood.
They made frequent stops along the way.
Just before lunch, they reached the campsite.
They didn't rush to set up the tents right away.
Stuart got the stove going first and whipped up lunch for everyone.
They had already discussed the division of labor at home, so no one was just sitting around.
After more than an hour of busy work, the hungry group finally dug into a delicious lunch.
After lunch, they got to work setting up the tents.
Chicago was the happiest, with Charlotte close behind.
Charlotte had lived in the wild before, but those times were much tougher.
Back then, she slept in ditches and piles of weeds. If she was lucky, she might find a small shelter to keep out the wind and rain.
But back then, all her energy was spent staying alert to dangers around her. She didn't have time to notice the scenery or plants.
There was one time, though, when a venomous snake crawled onto her while she was sleeping in the grass. Luckily, Christopher spotted it early and used a stick to chase it away.
Charlotte was super curious about what the snake looked like and kept asking Christopher, but he couldn't describe it. He just said he took care of it.
When setting up the tent, Charlotte was extra careful.
She made sure the four corners were secure.
The tarp was stretched out smoothly.
After setting up her tent, she took off her shoes and socks and lay down inside.
Feeling the cool ground and the gentle breeze from the entrance, Charlotte felt a strange sense of joy, like she was lying on clouds.
Seeing this, Chicago also took off her shoes and socks, crawled in, and lay down next to Charlotte.
"Charlotte, are you happy?" she asked.
Charlotte turned to look at Chicago, her eyes sparkling, and nodded seriously. "Yeah, I've never been this happy before."
"That's great!" Chicago said, swinging her legs. "I love it when the people I love are happy!"
Charlotte looked at her, a rare and genuine smile spreading across her face.
Charlotte thought to herself, 'I will definitely protect Chicago and Charles. I love you guys too!'
After setting up their tent, Darwin looked around for Chicago, but she was nowhere to be seen.
"She went to find Charlotte," Fiona said, brushing the dust off Darwin's sleeve. "Let them play. They'll come looking for you to catch crabs soon."
Catching crabs was something Darwin had been told about in advance.
He was looking forward to it.
Just as Fiona said, once the tents were set up, Chicago and Charlotte ran over and dragged Darwin along to catch crabs.
Unlike last time, when it was just Chicago and Darwin, this time, everyone joined in.
The creek water was cool.
The adults and kids split into groups and started a competition to catch small crabs.
Before they started, Chicago made sure to remind everyone not to hurt the little crabs.
Fiona stayed out of the water.
