Chapter 1443

Fiona woke up from her dream, her heart racing.

"Are you okay? Bad dream?" Darwin asked, sitting beside her with a worried look.

Fiona's tears streamed down her face.

Darwin quickly wiped her tears away and pulled her into a comforting hug, gently patting her back.

After a few moments, Fiona started to calm down.

"I'm fine," she sniffled. "I just dreamed about them."

Darwin knew exactly who she was talking about.

"Did they mention me?" Darwin asked, trying to lighten the mood. "Did they say anything bad about me?"

Fiona managed a small smile through her tears. "No, they didn't say anything bad about you."

She paused, then recounted what Carla had said in the dream to Darwin.

"Does this mean they accept me?" Darwin's face lit up with joy, and he hugged Fiona tightly. "I've got my mother-in-law's approval!"

"Don't get too full of yourself," Fiona muttered, hugging him back gently. "My mom's not someone to mess with. If you behave, she'll accept you. But if you screw up, watch out—she might come after you in your dreams!"

"Alright," Darwin said softly. "If I mess up, I'll hire some goons to give me a good beating on her behalf!"

Fiona's sadness melted away with Darwin's playful banter.

She glanced at the clock.

It was almost eight.

"Let's get up, wash up, and grab some breakfast. We need to head back to Bay City and pick up the sunflowers from the apartment."

Darwin playfully pushed her back onto the bed. "Five more minutes!"

Fiona laughed, shaking her head.

But she stayed with him for five more minutes.

Then they got up, washed up, and headed out for breakfast.

As they passed by the gardenias, Darwin suddenly let go of Fiona's hand and clasped his hands together in a reverent gesture.

Fiona was momentarily puzzled, then she laughed.

She mimicked Darwin, clasping her hands together.

"Gardenias, I hope you stay healthy and bloom beautifully every year!"

After her little prayer, she grabbed Darwin's hand and pulled him along.

"Hurry up, if we're late, there won't be any breakfast left at that place!"

They rushed out the door.

In the garden, the gardenias shook their leaves and quietly bloomed two more buds.

Sesame Alley wasn't remote; it was right next to Serene City's CBD, but it had a very lively, down-to-earth vibe.

Early in the morning, the breakfast shops along the street were steaming, the delicious smells making mouths water.

Neighbors carrying fresh groceries chatted with shop owners as they fanned themselves on their way home.

Every now and then, they would encounter a cute dog or two.

Darwin always said, "Jessie is still the cutest."

Darwin added, "Jessie was probably the first to notice something was off with me."

"That's right," Fiona realized. "Back when we were in North Alabam, Jessie went from loving you to being very wary and defensive around you. It was like if you got close to Charles and Chicago, she'd start growling."

Darwin nodded and pulled out his phone.

"What are you doing?" Fiona asked.

"Buying Jessie a truckload of canned food!"

Fiona rolled her eyes and took Darwin's phone. "Burl just bought Jessie a truckload of canned food. Save your share for next time. The dog's going to turn into a pig at this rate!"

After Jessie had saved Chicago, nearly losing her life in the process, the family's attitude towards Jessie had completely changed.
