Chapter 976

Burl remained silent.

The moment Darwin left, Jessie changed its expression. Clearly, it was wary of Darwin.

Chicago noticed that once Darwin left, Jessie immediately let its guard down, showing a strong aversion towards him. It was quite frustrating and worrisome.

Charlotte approached with two large slices of watermelon. Seeing that Jessie had finished the one in Burl's hand, she squatted down and offered Jessie another piece.

"My dad once had a friend who kept dogs," she said. This so-called friend was actually a mortician who used fierce dogs to dispose of bodies. "He said that the more formidable the dog, the keener its sense of danger."

Burl had the watermelon and nodded involuntarily.

"Whenever he went on a mission, he would always bring a dog. If the dog became anxious or wary, he would immediately abort the mission," Charlotte continued.

"I know. People do that in movies!" Burl interjected.

"Do they?" Charlotte, who didn't watch movies, responded calmly and then added, "Jessie is a very smart dog. It must have sensed something, which is why it's so wary of your father."

Chicago looked bewildered. However, Burl thought Charlotte was talking nonsense again.

Chicago had heard about Charlotte's background and history. She had always been cautious of her surroundings.

"Charlotte, you're overthinking. Darwin used to..." Burl said. He finished his watermelon and wiped his hands. Suddenly, he covered Chicago's ears, saying, "He wasn't a good person before, but he is very good to his children. He would never allow anyone to harm Chicago and Charles!"

Charlotte remained silent.

Christopher had taught her that there was no need to argue with others for different opinions. She held firm to her beliefs. Like Jessie, she would remain cautious of Darwin.

Learning wasn't the most important thing; she had recently strayed from her main focus. From now on, she would pay more attention to Chicago and Charles. Even if it was Darwin, their father, she would never let him harm them!

In the height of summer, the sunset was always breathtaking.

Fiona, holding Darwin's arm, glanced at a message from Christopher.

Christopher: [Ms. Woods, after Mr. Solomon left, the dog returned to normal.]

Fiona didn't hide the message from Darwin. She had noticed that the more she concealed things from him, the more insecure and paranoid he became.

"Even Jessie knows I did something wrong," Darwin said softly, his eyes downcast.

"Jessie has always been a very loyal dog." Fiona squeezed Darwin's arm. "It was probably just scared."

Darwin nodded.

However, when did Jessie start acting differently towards him?

It seemed that before he accidentally pushed Chicago, Jessie had already changed its attitude. For several days, it hadn't been as clingy.

Usually, when he was in his room, Jessie would lie near his workspace or sunbathe with him.

Today, when he and Chicago went for a walk, Jessie, which had been sleeping, insisted on following them despite its drowsiness. However, it was different from before. Previously, without a leash, it would run wildly on the grass. Today, it stayed close to Chicago the entire time, never leaving her side. Because of this, when Chicago fell, Jessie was able to rush over and shield her immediately.

During the walk, Jessie had also shown hostility towards him. Why?

"Darwin?" Fiona's voice brought Darwin back to reality.

He looked at her, bewildered.

"Uncle Darwin, you shouldn't zone out when your wife is talking to you!" A voice came.
