Chapter 646 Charlotte Never Hurts Anyone

It wasn't worth it.

In the study, Darwin was teaching Chicago very seriously, but Chicago didn't seem to have the motivation to learn.

After ten minutes, Chicago closed the book and leaned on the table. She tilted her head to look at Darwin. "Why aren't you happy?"

This was the first time in such a long time that Chicago asked him such a question.

Darwin's eyes were sore. He couldn't quite pinpoint why he wasn't happy either.

Ever since meeting Annie and her mention of Hathaway and that incident, Darwin felt like a fishbone lodged in his throat.

He felt extremely restless.

"Babe, I did something wrong in the past," Darwin answered softly. "Suddenly remembering it, I feel guilty and sad."

Chicago thought for a moment. "Did you hurt someone?"

Darwin nodded.

He nearly allowed this precious angel to miss her chance at entering the world.

Darwin's heartache intensified.

"Has she forgiven you?" Chicago asked.

"Probably." Darwin thought for a moment, actually unsure if Fiona had truly forgiven him or if she was just reluctantly living with him to avoid more troubles.

"If she forgave you, then you don't have to blame yourself so much." Chicago hesitated for a moment, placing her small hand on Darwin's hand. "I may not know many people, but you're one of the good ones in my circle."

Darwin's eyes shimmered. "Baby, can Daddy give you a hug?"

Chicago got up and walked over to Darwin.

Darwin embraced her, and Chicago gently patted his back, saying, "There, there, patting you will make you feel better. If you're sad, Mommy will also be unhappy. Don't be sad, tonight I'll cook something delicious for you!"

Chicago acted like a little adult, constantly comforting Darwin. His sadness dissipated gradually.

"I will cook with you!"

"Okay." Chicago nodded. "Then we won't study now, alright?"

Although her level was not to the point where Darwin would cry while teaching her, he felt sad right now. Having to teach her was quite miserable!

"No, we have to finish this page, otherwise Mommy will ask later, and Daddy will have a hard time explaining." Darwin ruthlessly refused.

Chicago fell silent.

Just like this, the father and daughter painfully finished studying that page's content.

Then Chicago fled from the study as if escaping for her life, with Darwin following behind, smiling.

"What's wrong with her?" Fiona asked with a smile.

"She didn't want to study, so I made her finish one page," Darwin replied.

"You actually dared to force her?" Fiona doubted.

Darwin shrugged and walked over to his wife. "You mentioned I wasn't happy, right? She was worried about me being sad, so she endured it,"

Fiona laughed.

Then she touched his cheek and kissed him. "Are you feeling a little better now?"

"Yeah."

Darwin spoke and opened his arms to embrace Fiona.

"Honey~"

"Now that you're feeling better, the company just called me about the tripartite cooperation case, and there are some details they need to confirm with you. So, my dear husband, you might need to have a video conference."

"What, they don't look for me anymore? They just go straight to you?"

Fiona laughed. "Well, Mr. Solomon has been getting lazy with work lately. What happened to the workaholic you promised to be?"

Finally, Fiona was still dragged by Darwin to accompany him to the meeting.

After the meeting, it was dinner time.

Chicago, true to her promise, prepared a salad bowl for the meal. She also cooked two perfectly runny eggs, one for Mommy and one for Daddy.

Unfortunately, her elder brother couldn't eat due to his slight allergy to eggs.

But Chicago promised to learn how to make other tasty dishes and specially prepare them for her elder brother.

After dinner, Darwin still had a mountain of work to deal with.

Fiona played with Charles and Chicago for a while.

Mike then entered from outside.

"What happened to your face?" Fiona saw Mike and asked in surprise.

Mike bore the marks of being struck near his right eye.

"Ahem, I was accidentally hit by Charlotte during the practice session." Mike coughed nervously, feeling guilty.

But it wasn’t an accident; he had let his guard down.

"You guys practice with her every day?" Fiona exclaimed, unable to hide her amusement.

"We have no choice, she was doing her homework and I just happened to pass by, then bam! She attacks me!" Mike said, getting a little excited and wincing from the pain in his face.

Fiona imagined the scene for a moment.

Charlotte was quite impressive.

"You're going to tattle on her?" Fiona asked.

Mike immediately straightened up, "It's inevitable to get hurt during practice. How could I possibly tattle on her?"

Mike took a step forward, "Charlotte wants a weapon."

"A weapon?"

"Yeah, she even provided the design herself, one that can be concealed." Mike paused for a moment, "After all, you want her to go to school. She'll be carrying this thing with her."

"Does Christopher know about this?" Fiona asked.

"I'm mad about this too. It wasn't Charlotte who told me, it was Christopher. He mentioned it when he was getting the weapon customized for Charlotte. If I hadn't overheard it, the weapon would have been on Charlotte's back already!"

"Bring Christopher here."

A moment later, Christopher arrived.

"What does Charlotte need a weapon for?" Fiona asked directly.

Christopher glanced at Mike and said, "She had it since she was a child, but it was lost when she was kidnapped by Simon. She needs something for self-defense."

"Who knows if she wants it for self-defense or to harm others? Christopher, can't you let Charlotte grow up like a normal child and go to school? If Charlotte ends up hurting someone later, won't it be Fiona's responsibility to allow her to go to school?"

"Charlotte won't do that! She never hurts anyone; she's very reasonable!" Christopher immediately countered.

"She single-handedly beheaded Simon in the palace!" Mike blurted out.

"Mike!" Fiona scolded.

Mike quickly realized he had misspoken.

Christopher froze. "Fiona, let him finish. Is it true that Charlotte killed Simon? Are you kidding me?"

Nervously, Mike glanced at Fiona, but she didn't respond.

Christopher turned to Fiona again. "Fiona, he can't be serious, right? How is this possible? Charlotte is indeed skilled, but how could she..."

Christopher struggled for a moment.

The smile faded from Christopher's face.

"No wonder Mike and Xavier didn't want Charlotte to play with their son and daughter. I thought they looked down on Charlotte, but it turns out they were afraid Charlotte would go on a killing spree."

"Christopher, Charlotte is trying to earn that commission to buy your freedom from your former organization," Fiona said.

"Why do I need freedom? Is my freedom so crucial?" Christopher exclaimed, his tone filled with agitation. "Charlotte! Charlotte can't harm anyone; she's just a child. How could her hands be stained with blood?!"

This was the first time Mike had seen Christopher so worked up.

Mike thought to himself that he had messed up this time.
