Chapter 971

Burl had been busy with work yesterday, so he spent the day sleeping at the Walker family's home. He had just woken up when he heard that Chicago had broken her arm. He rushed over in a panic, even before Alexander arrived.
Seeing Chicago's bloodied face and her pitiful crying nearly broke Burl's heart.
When he found out that Darwin was the one who had pushed down Chicago, his anger didn't subside.
Once everyone else had left, Burl spoke discontentedly. "Even if there was a ball coming, you could have held her and shielded her with your body. Why did you have to push her?"
"Uncle Burl..." Chicago gently tugged on Burl's thumb.
Burl's eyes were red. "It's true what they say, sometimes the father can be the danger in a place without danger!"
"Burl, that's enough. He didn't do it on purpose," Fiona looked at Burl and said. "Take Charles and Chicago to get something to eat."
Burl didn't respond to Fiona. He just picked up Chicago. "Charles, come with me!"
Charlotte and Ethan were also there. Upon seeing this, they followed them out.
Charlotte reached the door but then turned back. "Mrs. Solomon, it's also my responsibility. I should have been with Chicago."
She had been too engrossed in her work.
"Charlotte..." Fiona spoke helplessly.
But Charlotte didn't give her a chance to speak. "I won't let this happen again!"
After saying that, Charlotte bowed and then turned to leave.
Fiona fell silent. She covered her forehead and sat down, feeling quite a headache.
Darwin looked at her, his heart in turmoil. "Honey, I..."
Fiona looked up at Darwin. "I know you didn't do it on purpose."
"But I almost caused something serious to Chicago!" Darwin's hands were trembling uncontrollably.
"Calm down." Fiona moved closer to him and held his trembling hands.
"Everyone makes mistakes, and you were trying to protect our daughter," Fiona said gently. Chicago is fine now, isn't she? You just need to be more careful next time."
Darwin looked at Fiona. Suddenly, he asked, "If I keep messing up, will you leave me?"
Fiona was slightly stunned. "What are you talking about?"
Darwin was filled with terror, worried not only about what could have happened if Chicago had actually hit the rock but also that Fiona might grow to despise him for his failures in protecting their daughter and then... leave him.
"You won't mess up, and I won't leave you." Fiona raised her hand and cupped Darwin's face. "Darwin, we are lovers, spouses, and each other's family. I will never leave you."
Tears welled up in Darwin’s eyes as he hugged Fiona tightly.
The fear of being abandoned, which had become a deep-seated phobia during the five years he thought he had lost her, was triggered again.
Even without those memories, when something triggered it, that fear would overwhelm him, mercilessly drowning Darwin completely.
Fiona added a bit more sedative to Darwin's midday medication.
After taking the medicine, Darwin fell into a deep sleep. But even in his sleep, he seemed tense. His brows were tightly furrowed.
Fiona sat beside him, gently smoothing his brow with her fingertips. She stayed with him for a while before stepping out to call called Darwin's psychologist. She explained everything that had happened that day, as well as Darwin's anxiety and panic.
