Chapter 123 A Series of Conspiracies
Ashton received a call from Fiona and immediately rushed to the hospital. Fiona was in excruciating pain from the fall and was terrified. They found a secluded hospital, and upon examination, it was confirmed that she was bleeding. Fortunately, she had managed to brace herself with her elbow when she fell; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable. Fiona had nowhere else to go, so she decided to heed the doctor's advice and stay in the hospital to protect the babies.
"How could this happen? We exhausted ourselves yesterday setting up the house!" Ashton clenched their teeth in anger after hearing the general situation.
Fiona was eating the lunch that Ashton had brought for her. "So, have you decided what to do now?" Ashton asked.
"Do you think the substitute can surpass the original? Especially when this man carries such guilt towards the original," Fiona looked at Ashton.
Ashton furrowed their brows. They had initially planned to comfort Fiona, but the words turned into a sigh. Then, Ashton murmured, "A man's first love is always unbeatable."
Fiona's heart ached. "Indeed, if it's unbeatable, there's no need to fight against it," Fiona continued eating, "Besides, he's not worth it."
"Now that his first love has returned, is he willing to set you free?" Ashton asked.
Fiona felt infuriated at the thought. Last year, he considered Darwin to have a bad temperament, but at least he had some dignity. Unlike now, he was utterly shameless.
"It seems like his first love underwent sterilization," Fiona mumbled. It was the only reason she could think of. "Maybe Darwin wanted to use my womb to have a child with her!"
Fiona had felt that Darwin's sudden desire for a child was excessive. Now that she knew Lilian couldn't conceive, this reason made sense.
"This is lacking common decency!" Ashton slapped their thigh, "And what about the decorations in the apartment?!"
"It's alright. When you go back later, just help me remove everything from the study. As for the other decorations, get the cleaning service to take them down," Fiona still felt regretful that they had set up everything so nicely, only for it to go to waste.
"Alright!" Ashton responded, "There's still some soup here. Have a few sips!"
Fiona finished the soup and felt satisfied. Looking at Ashton, she said sweetly, "I'm glad I have you; otherwise, I wouldn't know what to do!"
"Who knows, maybe we're meant for each other," Ashton leaned on Fiona's shoulder, "Is your stomach still hurting?"
Fiona shook her head. Ashton didn't stay for long and quickly went to complete the tasks Fiona had assigned. Little did they know, as Ashton's car was halfway through its journey, a black sedan suddenly went mad and charged towards them. By the time Ashton realized it, there was no way to avoid it. Determinedly, Ashton swerved the steering wheel and veered towards the empty sidewalk. The black sedan brushed against them.
round the corner, the sparks flew as the car made contact. The loud noise immediately attracted the attention of the people nearby, including the police officer on duty at the nearby intersection. Seeing this, the black vehicle didn't continue but swiftly fled the scene. Ashton's car flipped over and landed in the flowerbed on the sidewalk, with the airbags already deployed. Aston had blood running down her forehead, the side window completely shattered, and her arm dangling out, dripping with blood.
Fiona hurriedly rushed to the hospital to save Ashton. Ashton's mother and stepfather had been overseas recently. The police couldn't reach any relatives, so they called Fiona. When Fiona arrived, she heard the full details of the accident and her whole body went numb.
"It was deliberate. Someone wanted to kill her!" Fiona's voice trembled, partly out of fear and partly out of anger.
"They targeted a stolen vehicle that is difficult to trace. We will investigate as soon as possible from our end!" the police reassured her.
"Thank you," Fiona sat down dejectedly, looking at the flashing emergency lights. "Oh, God, please protect Ashton and help her get through this dangerous period and recover her health! I promise to do more good deeds in the future to give back to society."
"Fiona!" Just then, Fiona heard Dagmar's voice. She thought she was imagining things, but when she looked up, Dagmar was already standing in front of her.
"Dagmar, how did you get here?" Fiona asked in surprise. "Didn't I ask my friend to call you for help in Bay City?"
"It was not your friend who asked me to come," Dagmar said, glancing at the door of the emergency room. "How is your friend doing?"
"I didn't ask anyone to call you and let you know," Fiona frowned. "Dagmar, I wanted to find you myself. I could have just called you directly. How could someone else have notified you?"
Dagmar was taken aback. "Could it be a prank?"
"When did you find out that my friend was in trouble?" Fiona continued to ask. Ashton's accident and Dagmar being tricked into coming to Bay City. Fiona felt uneasy.
"I received a text message when I got off the plane," Dagmar handed his phone to Fiona. The number was encrypted.
"Dagmar, you should be more cautious. At least call me first," Fiona said nervously.
"When I heard you were trying to protect the babies, I was terrified. I didn't think of anything else," Dagmar said, looking at her abdomen. "Why did you suddenly have to protect the babies? The last check-up said everything was fine with the little ones, right?"
"I had a fall," Fiona mumbled in response.
"Where did you fall?" Dagmar quickly looked around.
"Nowhere..." Fiona couldn't help but laugh and cry.
"That's good, tomorrow I'll accompany you to buy two pairs of non-slip shoes. As the months pass, falling won't be a small matter anymore!" Dagmar rambled on.
However, Fiona still felt uneasy. "Dagmar, I need your help."
"Let's go back first, I don't have much to do here," Dagmar said gently. "I'll accompany you and wait for your friend to come out. I don't want to see you waiting outside the operating room alone."
Fiona understood what Dagmar meant. Her eyes reddened quietly.
"Have you had dinner?" Dagmar asked.
Fiona hadn't paid attention to the time and subconsciously glanced at her phone. It was already 7 o'clock.
"I knew you hadn't eaten. I'll buy you some food!" Dagmar exclaimed.
"Thank you," Fiona nodded.
It was already past the hospital cafeteria's mealtime. Dagmar went outside and bought something hot before returning.
Little did he know, every move he made was being closely observed in the shadows.
Although Fiona had no appetite, she forced herself to eat a little.
The surgery lasted until 9:30 p.m.
Finally, the lights in the operating room went out.
When Ashton was pushed out due to the impact on his head, Fiona couldn't even recognize his swollen face. As soon as she came out of the operating room, Ashton was immediately sent to the ICU for observation.
"I asked the surgeon, and all the blood clots in her brain have been cleared. As long as she wakes up within 24 hours, there shouldn't be any major issues," Dagmar said, coming back with a can of warm sweet milk. "Fiona, you also need to rest now. Otherwise, I can go to a nearby hotel and get you a room. You can go take a break while I stay here."
