Chapter 234 Will you love someone else?
The mention of Dagmar made Ashton’s head hang low.
"But what about you?" she asked despondently, "Besides Darwin, could you fall for someone else? Marry someone else? Are you going to be alone forever?"
Ashton didn't think marriage in itself was essential.
But to love someone and still end up alone,
That love would turn into a poison, eating away at your heart,
Tormenting you every moment.
Fiona remained silent.
Only when she was tricked into going to Darwin's apartment did she realize what he truly meant to her.
Even as the years slipped by,
Her body remained loyal to him.
But what about her heart?
After all these years, never dating another man,
Was it because her heart was loyal to Darwin too?
"I just want to live well in the present, and as for the future..." Fiona took a deep breath, "I'll just go with the flow, life's too long and always changing."
Ashton listened, thinking about Kenny's words from earlier.
Yes, life is long, long enough to slowly erase someone from your heart.
The conversation couldn't go on.
They cut it short and returned to their respective rooms.
After taking a shower,
Ashton checked her phone and found several missed calls.
All from unknown numbers.
She deleted them one by one and opened a WhatsApp message from Kenny.
Kenny had sent a video.
It was a chubby Golden Retriever, Kenny's hand rubbing the belly of it.
Ashton replied, "Is that your cat?"
In the chat box, a message popped up: "My little nephew got it; after losing interest in just two days, I brought it home. His name is Teddy."
Soon after, there was a new video message.
"Teddy, say hi to Mom."
"Mama."
Ashton couldn't hide the grin spreading across her face.
Kenny had acquired a furry son—a kitten.
Teddy's good nature was obvious as he purred contentedly.
"He's so adorable. Why not bring him along next time?"
Of course, Kenny would agree.
"Getting late, you should sleep. I’ll bring you breakfast tomorrow."
After a moment’s thought, Ashton sent a voice message: "How about you come over, and I'll make breakfast for you instead?"
By now, Teddy had curled up in Kenny's arms, purring happily.
Listening to Ashton's voice message, Kenny’s smile was irrepressible, although his text remained cool.
"Sounds good. See you in the morning, goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Kenny set down his phone, picked up Teddy, and engaged in some joyous roughhousing.
After the playful tussle, he didn't forget to teach Teddy a lesson: "When you see Mom again, you better be even cuter, got it?"
Teddy looked bewildered with his big droopy face, slightly dazed from the affectionate manhandling.
Ashton, before going to bed, had set her alarm.
It was going to be her first time making breakfast for Kenny, and she wanted it to be perfect.
So she planned to get up early to prepare everything.
She drifted off peacefully.
The next day, however, the alarm didn’t sound—or maybe it had, but the groggy Ashton had turned it off in her sleep.
She hurried downstairs in a frenzy.
Fiona was already dressed for work.
"What's up?" Fiona asked, with a slice of buttered toast in her mouth, her words coming out muffled.
"I was supposed to make Kenny breakfast this morning, but my alarm didn't go off, and I overslept!" Ashton frantically explained.
Fiona pointed to the stylish clock on the wall: "It's only 7:30, you've still got time to scramble."
Ashton, clutching her hair in distress: "Can I just order takeout?"
But she immediately dismissed her own suggestion: "No, no, that won't do!"
"Girl, you figure it out; I've got a meeting to catch," Fiona waved dismissively, picked up her briefcase, and stepped into the elevator.
Ashton zipped upstairs, quickly changed out of her pajamas, washed up, did a simple skincare routine—there was no time for makeup—and dashed back down.
Just as she reached the kitchen, the doorbell rang.
Rushing to the door, who else could it be but Kenny?
She hesitated momentarily.
Breakfast wasn’t ready, but she couldn't exactly leave him outside, could she?
She reluctantly swung the door open.
"Good morning, Mrs. Walker," Kenny greeted her, holding a bunch of exquisite red roses.
"I overslept, breakfast isn't ready yet…" Ashton confessed, taking the roses and ushering Kenny inside, her voice tinged with apology as she fetched slippers for him.
"No rush, take your time; I’m not hungry yet," Kenny reassured her, slipping into the slippers she offered.
"Just make yourself comfortable in the living room; I'll be quick!" Ashton said, carrying the roses to the kitchen.
Last night, she had mentally whipped up an extensive list of delicious breakfast ideas, intending to follow recipes to the letter. But now that Kenny was here, sticking to the recipes would come off as inexperienced. It couldn't be helped. Ashton could only make the breakfasts she occasionally crafted on her own – sandwiches and smoothies. Her execution of these two staples had always been hit or miss.
As Ashton reached into the fridge for the smoothie fruits, Kenny came in. "You don’t have to come over here; I’ve got this!" she said, hastily.
"Should I put these flowers in a vase?" Kenny offered.
Ashton nodded, scanning the area. "Where did that vase go..."
"Right here."
Kenny had quickly located it. "Yes, yes, that's it!" Ashton confirmed with a rapid nod.
"Mrs. Walker, please don’t mind me. Continue with your work."
In business, Ashton was nothing short of seasoned and composed. The stark contrast to her kitchen demeanor was quite something. Kenny carefully stripped the roses of their greenery and thorns, stealing glances at Ashton from time to time. Somehow, her organized chaos was astonishing.
With the flowers properly placed, Kenny set the vase in the living room. When he returned, the sandwiches were ready. Thankfully, the bread hadn't burnt this time… Ashton gave herself a mental nod of approval.
"All set!" she announced, placing the sandwiches and smoothie on the table. Kenny took a seat. Ashton sat opposite him, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. In reality, this breakfast was the same easy-to-digest, child-friendly fare she often made for Chicago and Charles.
Chicago had always raved about it! Charles wouldn't compliment but would finish it every time. Ashton had noticed that if Charles didn't like something, he wouldn't go past the first bite. This breakfast was comparable to the ones made by Stuart.
"Is it good?" Ashton asked, eyes twinkling, as Kenny took his first bite.
"It’s delicious," Kenny said, nodding with an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Ashton heaved a huge sigh of relief.
"That's a relief! Great to hear!"
Truth be told, Kenny wasn't fond of eggs. Still, he devoured every sandwich, discreetly spitting out any eggshell bits to avoid discouraging Mrs. Walker’s efforts. However, the smoothie was right up Kenny's alley. Before leaving, he helped himself to two glasses.
Mrs. Walker, why don't you stay with me until your father's house is ready?" Kenny suggested, clearly looking forward to more of these delightful breakfasts.
