Chapter 627 Overreaction
"Unfortunately, Mr. Simon, your devious scheme has failed," the message stated plainly, signed off by Fiona.
Simon's eyes narrowed as he read the message. Fury bubbled within him.
"Useless! Utterly useless!" He erupted, hurling his phone to the ground, shattering it into fragments.
"I knew this would happen," Lilian's voice pierced through the chaos, entering the room.
Simon looked up, tear-filled eyes meeting Lilian's as she approached, draped in his favorite silk robe, her arms crossed in disapproval.
"Lilian, you're back... I've missed you," Simon choked out, desperation in his voice.
"Miss me? You couldn't even exact revenge properly. What right do you have to miss me?" Lilian's icy touch grazed Simon's cheek. "I can't rest until those children and Darwin are dealt with. Understand?"
Simon nodded repeatedly. "I understand, I will do it. Can you stay? I miss you so much."
Tears streamed down his face. "Give me another chance. Six years ago, I wouldn't have divorced you, I wouldn't have let you go..."
Lilian just stared at Simon coldly and didn't respond to his words.
Simon hurriedly continued, "I promise you, I will avenge you. If this assassin doesn't work, I'll find someone else!"
Lilian remained unmoved by his pleas. "They're dead, Simon. No one stands in our way now. Don't you want a future with me? Kill them, and we can be together forever."
Simon nodded again, pulling Lilian into a tight embrace.
"Don't leave me... never again," he pleaded.
Meanwhile, Fiona returned home after parting ways with Thalassa, her mind heavy with the day's events.
Arriving home near midnight, she checked on her sons, Charles and Chicago, finding them asleep and safe. Guilt gnawed at her, knowing their lives were once again threatened due to her conflicts.
Upstairs, she found Darwin unexpectedly present.
"I thought you had a meeting in another city?" she questioned, puzzled.
Darwin glanced up, concern etched on his features. "It was a last-minute change. I was supposed to accompany Chicago at the art exhibition."
Fiona reached out to touch his cheek, a silent apology in her gaze.
"Simon sent someone after Charles and Chicago. Why didn't you tell me?" Darwin said as his gaze darkened.
"I didn't hide it from you. I wanted to wait for you to finish your meeting and tell you face to face. I was afraid that if you found out, you would just come back without taking care of things there." Fiona explained.
Darwin frowned. "Fiona, it shouldn't have been like this. I am your husband and Chicago and Charles' father!" he said in a low voice, "What other job can be more important than that?"
Fiona realized her mistake.
Darwin was truly angry.
"I might have gotten used to it," Fiona explained softly. "I'll pay attention from now on, okay?"
"Used to it? Used to what? This has happened more than once or twice. You always handle everything on your own, and if I don't find out, you’ll never mention it!" He clenched his teeth. "Are you used to not having me around?"
"Darwin, you're being unreasonable. Didn't you ask me to do the same when I used to work by your side? If there were unresolved problems, I would go to you for help. Why is it not okay now?"
Fiona was already fed up today. She had no desire to pacify Darwin's sudden temper.
As soon as she finished speaking, Darwin's expression was slightly startled..
Realizing her oversight, Fiona softened her approach. "I'll be more attentive. I promise."
Darwin's anger seemed to dissipate. "Let's not dwell on this. I'm sorry for overreacting," he conceded, reaching for her hand.
In fact, this overreaction had never disappeared from Darwin's heart since they got married.
Darwin was always cautious, afraid of touching things he shouldn't. He almost always complied with Fiona's wishes. But for some reason, the more he did so, the more Darwin felt like walking on thin ice.
Compared to Darwin's cautiousness, Fiona gave him the feeling that she could leave at any moment.
On the way back just now, Darwin couldn't help but ponder whether Fiona would still have married him if he hadn't used those threats. Darwin wondered if Fiona would have held onto him if he hadn't clung so desperately.
"Darwin..." Fiona looked at him with some concern.
"I will take care of Simon's matter. It's a trouble that I caused." Darwin tightly held Fiona's hand, looking up at her.
Darwin's usually beautiful eyes were now bloodshot, rendering him fragile and pitiful, a sight Fiona had never encountered before.
"You can't get involved," she cautioned, her concern mounting. other hand. "The more it relates to Lilian, the more you can't get involved."
Darwin frowned.
Fiona approached and kissed him, saying, "Darwin, a family naturally has divisions of labor. Today, you took care of the children more, and I went out to face difficulties. If I am tired tomorrow, you can go out instead. It's the same. Don't think too much about it."
Speaking of this, Fiona paused for a moment. "But you were right just now. Regardless of my considerations, I should have told you about such a big matter as soon as possible. It was indeed my fault."
"It's not..." Darwin quickly embraced Fiona.
"It's me being narrow-minded," Darwin whispered.
Fiona embraced Darwin, her arms wrapping around him as she gently patted his back. "I'm still feeling a bit scared. I'm glad you're back. How about holding me while I sleep?"
"Of course," Darwin replied, tightening his embrace around Fiona.
Fiona cherished him deeply. She wouldn't just leave him in times of need. With a tender touch, she continued to soothe Darwin's worries, feeling a warmth spreading through her.
Despite Darwin's exemplary behavior lately, even earning praise from Thalassa for being a devoted husband, tonight his emotions suddenly overflowed. Fiona sensed something amiss. Observing him closely, she noticed signs of mental distress. Upon reflection, she realized there had been too many unsettling events in the past six months.
First, Grandma's death, then Anniston's unexpected passing. There was also a period of rivalry between Fiona and Darwin.
"Darwin." Fiona softly called his name.
"I'm here," Darwin buried his head in her neck and replied.
After a moment of silence, Fiona voiced a decision that surprised them both. "Let's have a wedding." "
