Chapter 1223
Fiona jolted awake, her heart pounding like crazy.
She sat up, took a deep breath to calm herself, and glanced out the window.
The morning had already arrived.
She'd only managed to catch half an hour of sleep, but somehow, she felt even more drained.
After a quick wash and change of clothes, she left the lounge.
"Chelsea!" Mike called out to her.
"Is he up?" Fiona asked.
"Yeah, he's been up for a bit. When he heard you were resting in the lounge, he didn't want us to disturb you," Mike replied, hesitating a little.
Fiona's expression darkened. "Talking to someone in the ward again?"
"Yep," Mike replied.
Fiona nodded, then pushed the door open and walked into Darwin's room.
Darwin was out of bed, standing by the window, soaking up the sun. When he heard the door, he turned to Fiona with a smile.
Fiona smiled back as she approached. "I was busy with work last night and didn't want to disturb you, so I crashed in the lounge."
"It's okay." Darwin took her hand. "The kid just left. Did you see him?"
Fiona shook her head gently. "No, I didn't."
"Then you must've missed him." Darwin chuckled. "It's fine. He doesn't plan to contact his foster mom anymore, so no more beatings."
Fiona looked at Darwin.
She then hugged him gently, her hand softly stroking his thin back. "That's good."
"Honey, do you not like him?" Darwin asked.
"Of course not," Fiona paused. "I just worry about you more. Every time you see him, something happens. It freaks me out."
Darwin kissed the top of her head. "It won't happen again. I'll be careful. After our camping trip, I'll start treatment with Hubert, okay?"
"Okay," Fiona replied softly.
After breakfast, the doctor came to check on Darwin.
Following Fiona's instructions, he prescribed some meds. "To prevent infection, it's best to get an injection before discharge."
Darwin went along with it.
At exactly ten, the doctor came in with the injection.
Fiona sat beside Darwin and glanced at it.
The doctor instinctively looked at Fiona.
She gave a slight nod, and the doctor administered the medication into Darwin's vein as per Hubert's instructions.
"Alright, we can go home now!" Darwin, already out of his hospital gown, was eager to leave.
"Chicago and Charles are still in school. Even if we go home, we won't see them. What's the rush? Let's wait a bit longer," Fiona said with a smile.
The doctor added, "Yes, Mr. Solomon, let's observe for half an hour before you go home."
Darwin reluctantly agreed.
During the wait, he took a few work calls.
Fiona kept in touch with Hubert online, updating him on Darwin's condition.
Luckily, the side effects Hubert mentioned, like drowsiness or nausea, didn't hit Darwin.
After half an hour, Darwin couldn't wait any longer. He grabbed Fiona and headed out.
As they left the VIP ward and were about to get in the car, Darwin seemed to remember something.
He straightened up and looked around.
Mike, Christopher, and Stuart were there too.
"Where's Xavier?" Darwin asked Fiona. "I haven't seen him around the hospital these past couple of days."
In the past, whenever Darwin was hospitalized, Xavier would always be crying at his door.
How come he was nowhere to be seen now?
