Chapter 1273

Charles, who usually took his time with everything, dropped his computer and bolted upstairs.

After a quick shower and a change into some fresh clothes, he rushed back down.

"I'm here!" Charles announced.

Seeing him, Chicago jumped up excitedly and nudged Kenny, "Godfather Kenny, can we start the video call now?"

Kenny smiled and said, "Let me check."

A moment later, the video call connected.

Chicago and Charles sat side by side, and as soon as the screen lit up, the face they missed so much appeared.

Chicago's lips trembled, and she felt tears welling up.

But remembering Fiona's advice, she held back and sweetly said, "Dad!"

Darwin had made an effort to look presentable.

He wasn't in a hospital gown but a white shirt with a thin knit sweater. His eyes scanned the screen, looking for someone.

Hubert had told him it was just a call with Charles and Chicago today.

Knowing Fiona wouldn't be there, Darwin felt a pang of emptiness when he didn't see her.

"Charles, Chicago, did you miss me?" Darwin quickly pulled himself together and spoke softly, "I miss you both so much."

"Dad, are you feeling better?" Chicago asked.

"Yeah, a little better every day," Darwin replied, "Sweetheart, I'm sorry I left so suddenly without telling you."

"It's okay," Chicago said, feeling a lump in her throat. "Just get better soon, Dad."

"I will," Darwin said, his eyes shifting to Charles, who hadn't said anything yet. "Charles, did you get the results of your competition?"

"Yeah, first place," Charles replied. After a pause, he added, "I went to Phoenix Prism today."

"Phoenix Prism?" Darwin's mind was a bit foggy.

Charles said, "Just focus on getting better. I'll help Mom with the company and take care of Chicago."

"Charles, thank you." Darwin's eyes got a bit misty. "It'll be tough for a while, but I'll be back with you all as soon as I can."

"Okay," Charles said, looking down. "I'll wait for you to come back."

The call time was limited.

Soon, Hubert reminded Darwin it was almost time to wrap up.

Darwin didn't want to hang up.

Hearing the call was ending, Chicago quickly said, "Dad, eat more, sleep more. The doctor said it helps you get better!"

She added, "I'll miss you a lot, and Charles will miss you too. Mommy will miss you too."

Darwin ended the call.

His heart ached.

He couldn't understand why things had turned out this way.

He wasn't asking for much.

Just a peaceful life with his family.

Why had such a simple wish become so hard to achieve?

"Are you okay?" Hubert asked, stepping forward.

Darwin, leaning on the chair, shook his head and waved Hubert off.

Hubert stood a few steps away, quietly watching.

"Mr. Graham," Darwin finally said after a while.

"Yes?" Hubert replied.
