Chapter 472 Another Child?
Darwin arrived home just in time for dinner.
As he entered, he heard Fiona on the phone, her tone betraying her anger.
"She brought a bunch of thugs over?
"Collect all the evidence of wrongdoing, and don't even think about living a peaceful life if you don't want to die a nasty death!"
Upon concluding her call, Fiona's eyes met Darwin's, momentarily catching her off guard. Despite her agitation, she swiftly directed the person on the other end of the line, emphasizing the need for discretion, "Begin the investigation, but proceed cautiously to avoid alerting them."
With a sense of urgency, she ended the call, her mind still reeling from the recent developments.
"Why are you home so early?" she asked.
“Dinner,” Darwin answered. “What’s the matter?”
It was something to do with Thalassa.
After thinking for a bit, Fiona shook her head in irritation. "Dinner is almost ready. Go wash up, I'll call the kids downstairs."
With that, she headed upstairs.
Darwin stood rooted to the spot.
A poignant sense of mistrust enveloped him.
He felt a mix of anger and hurt, yet more than anything, he felt helpless.
He had become increasingly conspicuous online recently, exposing himself to a barrage of negative commentary. Some of it, he begrudgingly acknowledged, held a grain of truth.
[Why indeed had he allowed things to spiral out of control?]
[Why hadn't he cherished what he had when he had the chance?]
Darwin’s lack of trustworthiness had surely earned him the disdain.
"Darwin!"
Just then, Fiona's shout came from upstairs.
Reacting swiftly to his somber musings, Darwin hurried upstairs without a second thought.
Meanwhile, as Fiona ascended the stairs to summon Charles, she remained oblivious to the unfolding drama. Unbeknownst to her, Charles had just sat up when a sudden nosebleed beset him.
By the time Darwin reached their side, Fiona, her attire, and her hands, as well as half of Charles's face, were drenched in blood.
"It's okay. We're heading to the hospital right now, it's fine."
Darwin went over, comforting Fiona while carrying Charles out.
The driver had not left since Darwin’s arrival.
With Charles in their arms, Fiona and Darwin swiftly made their way to the hospital, the urgency of the situation propelling them forward. Fortunately, the nosebleed had subsided somewhat, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the chaos.
Fiona's eyes were red-rimmed as she fought back tears, her gaze tenderly fixed on Charles in Darwin's arms. "Charles, don't be scared, sweetheart. We're going to have the doctor take a look at you, stop the bleeding. It's going to be alright."
Charles nodded. "Mommy, I'm not scared."
He had researched his condition and knew all the possible developments and changes his body could undergo.
Indeed, he wasn't afraid.
"Yeah." Fiona managed a weak smile and nodded firmly.
Shortly after, they were at the hospital.
Fiona had already contacted the attending physician.
The doctor quickly stopped Charles's bleeding, but he was kept for observation.
"These incidents can occur," the doctor reassured. "Parents shouldn't blame themselves excessively. After all, some things are unforeseeable. From what I see, the young man is doing quite well. Don't worry too much."
"Thank you." Fiona nodded.
As the physician departed, leaving the VIP ward to its usual quietude, Fiona found herself enveloped in a sudden sense of emptiness. However, her solitude was swiftly interrupted by the firm grip of Darwin's hand on her wrist, drawing her attention. Looking up, she met his gaze with a blank expression, only to see him holding a wipe, diligently cleansing the blood from her hands.
"I shouldn't have let Charles stay on the computer so long this morning," Fiona choked out.
Darwin frowned at her. "The doctor said it's unpredictable and not your fault. Stop blaming yourself."
Fiona's eyelids drooped.
The tightly wound emotions inside her began to crumble.
The unstoppable bleeding that had Charles scared her immensely.
"It's okay now."
Seeing her state, Darwin gently wrapped her in his arms and softly patted her back.
Fiona didn't push away.
The sight of Charles's nosebleed had enveloped her in panic, and calling for Darwin had been almost instinctive.
Now, she no longer wanted to pretend that she wasn't affected.
She sobbed quietly in Darwin's embrace.
After a while, Thalassa's voice echoed from the elevator entrance.
Fiona pulled herself together, took a deep breath, and stepped out of Darwin's embrace.
As she turned around, she saw Thalassa holding Chicago.
Chicago’s nose was red as if she'd been crying.
"Oh my..." Fiona felt a surge of guilt. She had been so focused on Charles that she'd forgotten about Chicago at home.
"Mommy!"
Chicago wriggled out of Thalassa's arms and ran to Fiona.
"Baby, I'm so sorry. I forgot to call you," Fiona said with teary eyes, lifting Chicago into her arms to apologize.
Chicago gently caressed her face. "Did Charles bleed? There's so much blood in the room."
"It's okay," Fiona comforted Chicago soothingly. "Charles is fine now, he's resting. Can you be brave for me, Chicago?"
Chicago nodded silently and then helped Fiona wipe away her tears.
Thalassa had just been driving around aimlessly near home when she got the call from Chicago. She could hear Chicago sobbing on the other end, talking about her brother bleeding and such.
She hurried back home; on the way, she tried calling Fiona but got no response, so she called Darwin instead and found out that Charles had been taken to the hospital.
After getting Darwin’s approval, Thalassa brought Chicago over.
Fiona was speckled with bloodstains. After seeing the situation, Thalassa brought her some clean clothes.
While Fiona went to change, Darwin took Chicago to see Charles.
Chicago lay beside her brother in silence, A torrent of tears welled up, cascading down her face in an unbroken stream. She watched him, choked with emotion, unable to tear her gaze away.
They say there's a mysterious connection between twins. Perhaps that applies even more to sharing each other's pain.
Darwin was heartbroken.
"Sweetie, are you hungry? I will buy you something tasty, okay?" Darwin bent down and gently stroked Chicago's head, asking tenderly, "What would you like to eat?"
Chicago continued to cry while shaking her head, still not speaking.
Darwin's heart ached.
Thalassa advised him, "Just give her some time to settle. When she feels hungry, she'll eat."
"Has it happened before?" Darwin asked.
Thalassa nodded. "When they were younger, whenever Charles was ill, Chicago would stick by him and wouldn't play with her animal friends. If Charles ate, she would eat; if he didn't, she wouldn't either."
Tears welled up in Darwin's eyes.
Fiona came back dressed in clean clothes.
"I ordered dinner; it should be here soon." Thalassa checked the time. "You both should eat something."
The dinner smelled delicious. However, the couple felt numb and emotionless, devoid of appetite.
They both shared an unspoken acknowledgment of the potential for similar incidents to occur in the future. Furthermore, there was the looming threat that Charles's condition could potentially lead to other unforeseen emergencies.
"I'm going to make a call," Darwin said as he put down his utensils and stood up to leave the hospital room.
Thalassa glanced in the direction he left.
She was about to say something when Fiona asked, "Do you think Darwin and I could still have another child?"
