Chapter 186 Double Salary

"What is this?" Darwin asked, somewhat puzzled.

"A very cute kitten!" Chicago exclaimed, "Uncle, do you have kittens at home? Can you help me take care of it?"

"Won't your mom and dad let you keep a pet?" Darwin inquired.

Chicago shook her head, "Charles is not well, we can't have furry animals at home, but I don't want the kitten to become a stray, Uncle..."

Chicago looked up with big eyes brimming with tears, giving him a pitiable gaze: "Could you consider adopting a kitten? I'll give all my allowance to Uncle, to buy little dried fish for the kitten to eat."

Darwin smiled helplessly.

"I can take care of this little cat. However, Chicago, you must promise me that you won't leave home without telling anyone like you did today." he said, his tone slightly stern.

Chicago nodded, "I won't do it again."

Darwin glanced at the kitten. Scrawny and nearly bald, it looked decidedly unhealthy.
At that moment, a text message from Charles came through.

Darwin opened it and paused, slightly taken aback.

Chicago was allergic to eggplant, and so was he.

"Chicago, how about we go have lunch first and then take the kitten to the vet for a check-up?" Darwin asked, looking at Chicago.

"Okay!" Chicago was already hungry. She had never been this hungry before.

Darwin led Chicago to the lounge, where they both washed their faces and hands, and Darwin even awkwardly retied her hair.

"Uncle..." Chicago looked at herself in the mirror, at her hair which resembled an exploded mess. She turned back and gave Darwin a grievous look.

After a short while, Chicago arrived at the CEO's office, where a dexterous young woman quickly tied up her hair neatly and prettily.

"Thank you, Ma'am, you're really beautiful." Chicago politely thanked her.

If Darwin weren't there, the young woman might have hugged Chicago tightly, showering her with affectionate kisses.

Such a cute and beautiful child!!!

"Uncle, I'm so hungry!" Chicago ran back to Darwin.

Darwin picked her up.

With tender love in his voice, he said: "Let's go have lunch now."

"Yay!" Chicago was delighted.

The young ladies in the CEO's office all wore smiles on their faces.

"What's your name?" Darwin asked the girl who had done Chicago's hair.

"I'm Cassie!" the girl replied energetically, standing up straight.

"You'll get double pay this month." Darwin said coolly, then turned away with a fatherly demeanor, chatting with Chicago as they headed for the elevator.

"Cassie, lucky you! Just for tying a hairdo, an extra month's salary!!!"

Once Darwin left, The CEO's office erupted with excitement.

Their salaries, with all the various allowances, barely exceeded twenty thousand dollars a month, double pay meant enough for an extravagant vacation!

Who could help but feel envious?

"But did you guys notice?" Cassie recovered a bit from her joy, "The little dear resembles Mr. Solomon quite a bit, doesn't she?"

"Isn't she calling Mr. Solomon 'Uncle'? Maybe she's the child of one of Mr. Solomon's brothers? It's normal for family to look alike, right?"

"That makes sense..."

The topic soon passed.

Everyone was clamoring for Cassie to treat them to a meal. Cassie was delighted, praying that the little cutie would come by more often.

Darwin had called the restaurant a bit earlier and ordered some of Chicago's favorite dishes.

Chicago was truly starving. She didn't stop eating until her little belly was perfectly round.

After lunch, Darwin and Chicago went to the nearby veterinary hospital together.

The little kitten was anxious and kept meowing pitifully. Listening to the kitten's cries was heart-wrenching for Chicago, who paced back and forth near Darwin.

After an examination, it was confirmed that the kitten's condition was indeed not good. Generally, for a non-pedigree stray kitten like this, many people would give up on treatment.

"Let's do everything we can to treat her." said Darwin calmly after hearing the prognosis, seeing Chicago almost in tears, "Money is not an issue."

In the end, the kitten had to stay in the hospital for treatment.

After the kitten was placed in an oxygenated glass compartment, Chicago spoke many encouraging words to it before reluctantly turning to leave with Darwin, looking back every few steps.

Not long after leaving the veterinary rooms, a call from an unknown number came to Darwin's phone.

He glanced at the screen.

Intuitively knowing it was Chicago's brother, he answered.

"Uncle, can you please bring my little sister to the west gate of the Solomon Building?" A young yet composed voice came through the phone.

"Okay." Darwin replied.

The call ended.

"Is Uncle going to be busy with work?" asked Chicago.

Darwin, smiling, shook his head, "Charles is here."

Chicago, gripping Darwin's finger, froze for a moment, then her eyes drooped, "I already said I can go home by myself."

"Your brother is worried about you." Darwin patted her head, "Your brother seems to be a genius kid as well."

"Yeah!" Mentioning this, Chicago couldn't help but boast instinctively. "Charles is really amazing. My Uncle is so impressive and has won many scholarships, but he still can't beat my brother!"

"Is that so?" replied Darwin with a smile, "Being your parents must make them very proud. Chicago is a great little artist, and Charles is so impressive."

"Yeah, Mommy often says that Chicago and Charles are her everything!" Chicago continued proudly, "Uncle, my Mommy is really impressive too!"

"You always talk about Mommy, but what about Daddy? Is Daddy impressive?" Darwin asked.

Chicago paused for a moment, pondering. "He should be impressive, I think?"

Wendy once said that for a child like her and her brother to be born, their mom must be incredible, and their dad couldn't be far behind in quality.

Even if that jerk abandoned them!

Darwin nodded in agreement.

It seemed like Chicago wasn't too pleased with their dad.

With a larger and a smaller figure holding hands, talking and sauntering leisurely to the west gate, they encountered many of Solomon's people along the way.

Wendy, with eyes swollen from crying, stood anxiously waiting under the shadow of the Solomon Building.

When she spotted the two figures, her tears nearly burst forth again.

"Miss!" Wendy shouted as she ran towards Chicago.

Reaching Chicago, she embraced her tightly, "How could you just run off without telling me! You could have at least taken me with you! You scared me to death!"

Chicago patted her on the head, "Wendy, I know that you're Mommy's person, you surely wouldn't have run with me."

"Sir..." Wendy wiped her tears and looked at Darwin.

Darwin gave her a piercing stare. Every time he saw this person, he felt as if she hadn't done her duty well. What were Chicago's parents thinking, leaving her with Chicago?

"Thank you very much for looking after the young lady." Wendy said stiffly, "I will... I'll take her back home now."

Wendy pointed to a nanny car parked not too far away on the roadside.

Darwin thought that the child named Charles must be in the car, right?
