Chapter 1493

"Alright," Charles replied, sounding like a loyal dog eager to please.

He clung to Charlotte, agreeing with everything she said.

"So, when did you find out your great-grandmother had talked to me?" Charlotte asked.

"When you just dumped me," Charles answered.

"Watch your words. We broke up peacefully. It's not about dumping or anything." Charlotte corrected him. "Since you knew, why didn't you ask me about it?"

"I was mad."

"Mad?"

"I thought you felt the same way I did. I thought you loved me just as much," Charles said quietly. "But after just a few minutes of talking to my great-grandmother, you decided to leave me."

"So what are you saying now? The main issue hasn't changed," Charlotte asked seriously.

"I had already decided. If you came back for my great-grandmother's birthday, that would be great. If you still wanted to avoid me, I would come find you," Charles explained.

"Find me for what?" Charlotte's heart skipped a beat.

"To apologize, to reconcile, to propose," Charles said simply.

Charlotte pressed her lips together, feeling an inexplicable sadness.

"Charles, I'll continue my insect research, and you'll start taking over the family business. I can't help you with that, and when I need you, it will be hard for you to be there for me right away."

"I can..."

"If you give up the family business for me, leaving your parents without an heir, I will leave Armie and disappear so you can never find me again!"

"Charlotte, you wouldn't dare!"

"You know I would!"

Their eyes locked, and unsurprisingly, Charles conceded. He buried his head in Charlotte's neck.

"See, our problems are very real. Charles, I love you."

Charles's body trembled. Charlotte's voice choked up a bit. "When we first got together, I thought back on everything and even felt that maybe I came into this world just for you."

Charles hugged her tighter.

"The decision to part ways back then was because we weren't compatible. I don't want our relationship to be worn down by long-term separation, with both of us absent when we need each other."

"It won't be," Charles insisted. "Let's promise to spend some time together every year, completely devoted to each other."

"But..."

She didn't finish her sentence. Charles kissed her, almost stubbornly. "You just do what you want to do, and leave the rest to me."

All these years, why had Charlotte always avoided coming back to Charles? Because she knew she couldn't handle anything when it came to him.

"I'll do great," Charles continued. "Charlotte, I'll do great. You should reward me, okay?"

"But your mother..."

"Mom didn't just find out today that I love you," Charles said, kissing her gently, watching her slowly succumb to his affection. "She knew many, many years ago."

Charlotte was stunned. Charles took the opportunity to deepen the kiss.

No one knew how clingy and persistent the seemingly cold and genius Charles could be in private.

The next morning, Charlotte woke up in Charles's arms again. They had slept on the velvet carpet in the second-floor study. Charlotte glanced towards the bedroom.

The double glass doors were wide open. The beautiful chandelier she had bought from abroad was shattered on the floor, and there was a hole in the ceiling.

Her mind was still blank from before she fell asleep. When she came to her senses, her first thought was, 'Did Charles pull that down?'Charlotte gathered her thoughts. She couldn't tell if it was the hard floor or the intense activity.
